  1. Browsing latest issue of Atomic Ranch magazine (devoted to mid century modern homes- AOAI has advertised here in the past)... There's a full page ad for Modernism Week in Palm Springs in February...the ad shows a mid century modern home in Palm Springs with palm trees & mountains behind the house and...lo and behold!! a fawn Stude Avanti in profile parked in front of the house...a perfect photo!!...check it out if you're in the local Barnes & Noble.

  2. James-thanks for the eBay seller!!...A couple of weeks ago I noticed some crazing in the center of the lens in my '82 & just barely touched it & my finger went thru the lens!!...it was thinner & more brittle than an eggshell!!...I was so po'd cause the interior is in great shape...I just ordered the new lens...the same thing is happening on the other lens-I'm not going anywhere near it!!

  3. August 2014 issue of Musclecar Review has a 4 page color feature titled "Avanti: what the future looked like in 1963"... Nothing new but nice photos of a red 63 with Kelsey Hayes Magstar wheels...and Loewy misspelled "Lowey" throughout the article!

  4. Hate to say it Gunslinger but I don't agree with promoting continued misinformation about our cars. The mystique surrounding Avanti's is really part of the car's uniqueness & if we (the owners) don't provide accurate information about them, who will???....I'm not saying that I have to be arrogant when I correct folks about our cars but when someone comes up to me and says "Oh yeah, I know about those Avan-"tays"- they came with 454 rat motors right?" (I've had this conversation!) they need to be "educated" so to speak...I would think you have to set people straight on certain points even with your C3 Vette, right?? (like LT1 vs big block, big block hood vs standard, etc)...that's the beauty of owning a collector car (and the challenge!) is knowing the intricacies of a particular car!!

  5. Is it just me or do others want to pull their hair out when someone calls their car an Avan-"tay"!!! Why are they trying to make an Italian word a French word??? I always come back with "It's an Avan-tee!!!" Was watching the FantomWorks episode & Dan Short calls the '83 he modified an Avan-"tay"....arghh!!!...makes me crazy!!! That '83 is nice for a highly modified (and ridiculous $$$) car but why do you take off the bumpers??? It drives me crazy when owners try to restyle the classic Loewy design-do they think Loewy (& his four Palm Springs designers) got it wrong the first time??? Isn't the look of the car (and for me the classic pre-84 chrome blade bumpers) why we love the Avan-"tee" in the first place???

  6. I found a new mint in box set of vintage Cibie driving lights (with cats eye covers) for my 82 on eBay...also found bumper mounting brackets there that are cheaper & much easier to use as compared to the Avanti Motors brackets... Do a seller search for "tilux" or search " Cibie Marchal fog driving light clamps holders brackets" under "car & truck parts > other parts"...there's a set active now for $34.99 with free shipping. All you need is a screwdriver!!...to align them I simply went on "studebaker-info.org" & eye-balled the positions from the RQA & RQB pics in the registry (essentially dead center under the headlight) & mounted them...they look great!!

  7. FYI-the Autogeek headquarters is about 5 miles from my home here in Stuart, FL....was gassing up my 82 a couple years ago at the 7-Eleven on my way to a show when a guy in a new Corvette convertible walks up & admires the car...then he gives me his card & invites me to the inaugural car show at the Autogeek warehouse ( I had never heard of them back then)-turns out to be the guy who started the company & who you see on "My Classic Car" & "Chasing Classic Cars"...thus I know the guy likes our rides!

  8. For what its worth...I live in South Florida & my car was located in Blaine, Washington-something like a mile below the Canadian border!...bought the car from photos and by calling the sellers references (he was a collector who lived in Vancouver but had the car in the US as he had bought it here & didn't want to pay the duty to import it). His references included the owner of a large auto auction company with whom he had bought & sold cars in the past (Silver)...even so, was not quite as immaculate as described and needed a rear main seal (it leaked like a seive on the way back to Seattle)!! Would suggest an appraiser (like those advertised in Hemmings) if you can't find an AOAI member to check out the car...I thought I hade made a real mistake when the leak arose, but after shipping the car home & having the mechanic do the work, I'm now glad I bought this car...haven't seen anything I like better in all these 5 years!

  9. Warren...82 and 83 had computer controlled carburetors...yes a pain in the a** if not tuned properly, but my mechanic says that if they are maintained that they work fine. I agree that collector values for Stude Avantis are much better than IIs and may increase in value in the future, however the buy in for a decent car is much higher than a II and you have to deal with Stude power train- not that that's bad...just old now. I like having the old look but being able to get any part I want for cheap at Autozone, etc because of the Chevy motor/tranny. And yes, 82 and 83 are the newest chrome bumper cars without the front cowcatchers. I like having an 80s era car that looks like a 64...drives more like a modern car.

  10. Warren...have had my '82 for almost 5 yrs now & am still glad I bought this year II. Seems like there's a lot of bashing of later II's by many members but I, like you, appreciate the original chrome bumper look with more modern ammenities. I searched for an '82 or '83 as I wanted the newest chrome bumper car I could find. Yes, the 305 is not very powerful, but then no car from this era was particularly fast (save for a 928 or the like). Contemporary road tests have 0-60 times in the 9's...I find that if I really put my foot down when accelerating that I can at least feel a little push into the seatback! At least there's the V8 sound. I particularly do not like 74-81 cars because of the cowcatcher front bumper extensions which were removed for 82-83 (by the way, does anyone know how or why this change came about)?? These year cars cannot be easily modified-cutting the extensions off still leaves empty tubes and a grill with holes in it. That leaves your choice to an early car that is now 40+ years old-try to find a low mileage original that old!!...mine had 52K unmodified miles.

I actually looked for a car with a moonroof-I have convertibles but find that here in SoFla I tend to use a sun/moonroof more often. Sure it leaks, but who cares as I only take the car out in nice weather! It still works fine and there's nothing like a Sunday morning drive to the beach with the windows down and the sun on your face!

'82 is the 1st year for the 200-4R 4 spd overdrive which makes the car much more comfortable for hiway cruising. I love my later model Recaro seats and the full leather interior and all the power options (which still work-so far)... I also like my period Blaupunkt cassette, the later model low profile trunk rack and the wire wheels and Cibie driving lights and return to covered headlights...when I was a teenager this was the style of Avanti I lusted after (albeit that would have been the early '70s)....II's always looked like that's how the Avanti should look...original Stude Avantis looked like older cars that needed these updates to stay modern...I remember seeing a new Avanti II sitting by itself in the grass parking lot at Watkins Glen during Grand Prix weekend about 1979-80- white with white Recaros with red piping, whitewalls, driving lights & wire wheels-all I can say is I don't remember any other car from that weekend!! That's when I said "someday I'll have one of those"...and that meant a II.

Anyway, it's all about that feeling you get when you see the right car. I don't cover my car in the garage because I like just looking at it when I open the door! So please, all you AOAI members, don't go hating on our newer cars...and Warren, good luck with 'The Search'!!

  11. FYI for any other owners who display literature with their Avantis, a 64 made the cover of the November '12 issue of Hemmings-featured as the 'Buyers Guide' car of the month. I sometimes fill the interior of my 82 ( seats, floor, console, dash, rear package shelf) with my ever growing collection of Avanti books, toys, sales brochures & magazines with Avantis on the cover just to overwhelm car show attendees with how far collecting stuff for your car can go! The look on people's faces when they stick their head in the car is priceless sometimes!

  12. Just got the September issue of Hemmings Muscle Machines in the mail. Started reading the article titled "Mister Versatility- Nobody has run hard in more types of race cars than Gene Felton"...turned to pg 33 & to my surprise is a great pic of the Herb Adams prepped Avanti II at an Escort (radar detector, not the Ford) series road race, the Mid-Ohio Six Hours, in 1984!!....as per the article, NOT the same car as raced at the Daytona 24 hours...didn't know this car existed!!! Too cool!!!

  13. Just got my copy of John Hull's new book today-lots of cool new pics that I've not seen before. On page 45 there's a photo of 2 car carriers loaded with new '63 Avantis. The 1st truck has a banner with "AVANTIS AWAY!" on it, but it's the second trailer that raised an eyebrow. It's banner reads: "AVANTI THE FLYING WEDGE". Am I the only Avanti owner (well, Avanti II) who has never seen any advertising or heard of our classic referred to as a "flying wedge"???
