  1. Hi All.. The paint is chipping and pealing like crazy all over my 74. The car seems to have a home paint job and I assume the prep was not very good. I have stated to experiment with different ways to remove the paint. Surprisingly a light touch with a heat gun and razor blade is very easy and pretty much everything comes off down to a gray finishing in which you can see but not feel the fiber stands. I assume this is the "raw fiberglass" but removal is so easy with this method it scares me. I am wondering if I am taking off too much. Is there a gelcoat that I want to try to preserve or am I fine to go down this gray fiberglass layer.

  2. Friends,

Is it difficult to remove the "cow catcher" bumper from a late 70s Avanti where it CONNECTS TO THE FRAME? (So as not to leave the tubes below the front bumper). How is it done?

    Thanks,

On my two '74 Avanti II's, I just removed he "cow catcher" from the frame via a couple of bolts and then installed some driving lights to the front of the exposed brackets. Looks good and no ones the wiser. I guess you could remove the exposed frame brackets but I think it would require cutting. Also, if you go that route your faced wih replacing the lower grill which as I understand isn't cheap (~ $200 - $300) if you don't want to see the square holes where the bracket passed through.

  3. Multi-part question.1) anyone have or used this book, and if so what do you think about it's applicability for an Avanti II? I already have a Studebaker Avanti Shop Manuel and a GM Shop Manuel for the SBC.2) anyone have a used copy they want to sell me via PayPal. Stan Doesn't take PayPal and I don't really want to mail a check or Money Order? Thanks.

  4. Please see attached photo. Can anyone confirm that this is the kick down switch for the SBC 400 with the TMH400? And if so can it be adjusted. Seem like I really got to push hard on the pedel to engage downshift and sometimes it doesn't even engage. With inspection it appears that when the throttle swivels around it doesn't make good contact to the push in button on the switch. Any advice or knowledge appreciated.

INSERT IMAGE FEATURE DOESN'T SEEM TO WORK!

  5. I am in the process of servicing the cooling system on my 74 Avanti II with a 400 ci SBC. I need to replace the radiator hoses. The current bottom hose is a flexiable and the top appears to be from pieces of one or more molded. Anybody have any part numbers for good replacements that can be found a your typical auto parts house? I like to use molded for both if possible. Other suggestions are welcomed. Thanks Jeff.

  6. Thanks Paul. Have you ever done any work on them or placed with any after market parts. My research shows that Stewart Warner makes an float style replacement and under their performance parts catagory they make a unit that has no movable parts call the Intellisensor. Anybody have any experience with these or others.

  7. The fuel gauge on my 74 avanti seems to get stuck around 1/4 tank. It will raise above 1/4 when it has more gas in the tank. I just pulled the sending unit and the gauge works great across the entire range when I manually move the arm up and down. The cork float looks to be in OK condition and does not seem "water logged". However, I intend to replace the float as that seems to be the only thing I can think of. Before I do this I like to get some input from of those of you with some experience in this area. 1) should I replace the cork with cork or something else 2) where's the best place to get replacement parts and what are the part numbers (would love to get at NAPA or some other parts house) 3) should I look at anything else as a cause

    Thanks,

    JG

  8. As advised in a previous thread, I was about to go do a compression test on my '74 Avanti II with the 400 C.I. SBC. It was then that I relized I had no idea where and how to hook up the two wires from the remote starter switch. I've done this before on Fords and it' real easy but not so obvious on the SBC. Please help and thanks in advance.

  9. My '74 Avanti II has the regular high back seat with no adjustment to lean the back further rearward. Somebody suggested that the from mounts might have two holes to allow for the seat to be permantely tilted back slightly. This would actually be a better solution as it also raises the support for under the thighs. In any case, I checked and unfortunately their is only one hole on the seat bracket for attaching to the floor board. this got me thinking that maybe there are other ways to accomplish the same effect. Any suggestion or advice are appreciated.

  10. I have a '74 Avanti with the 400 c.i. SBC engine. The exhaust is straight through (no muffler or CAT) and I I have an open free breathing air cleaner to maximize overall breathing. When I lift my foot off the throttle driving down the street at high RPM, I hear a sort of low pop, pop, pop exhaust note which then dies down as the car decelerates or if I get back on the throttle. Further if I maintain even just the slightest throttle the noise does not occur. The noise is sort of a small explosion, not a backfire. I’ve heard this kind of noise before on high performance cars such as at drag strips. This might be normal cylinder ignition but the way that it occurs puzzles me and I don’t think it’s normal or good for the engine. I am hoping that one of you experienced car guys car give me some ideas as to what this is and what I should do if anything. Thanks, JG.

  11. I really appreciate this forum and want to make sure I getting the most out of it. My question, is the 66-83 section really only 5 pages and starts from March of 2005? I read mentions of other post such as using a washer in the shifter as a means of adjustiment to get into 1st, but don't seems to be able to find anything further. This is just one example of others. Am I doing something wrong? What am I missing?

    Thanks.

  12. I'm about to replace the valve covers on the 400ci SBC in my '74 Avanti II. I was wondering if it made a difference what side or where the PCV, Breather and Oil Fill cap went? Reason being that the oil fill cap is in a difficult place and I thought either switching sides of the motor or fliping the cover front-to-back so the oil fill is toward the front fo the engine would make it easier. Thanks for any input.

  13. Thanks for the information, please keep it coming. The drums via Nostalgic are $150 EA plus shipping to Seattle, WA. Total for just drums is going to be ~$350 plus 7-10 days shipping. I am hoping to save time and money by finding replacements locally. I am working with my local Napa guy to identify replacement drums and am having a hard time matching up. The old drums have Kelsey 67973 (the 6 could be a 5 and the 9 could be an 8). They also say “made in Canada”. I'll keep probing for a day or two before I give up and get them from Nostalgic. However, it would be nice to find a replacement so when Nostalgic runs out we have alternatives. Seems like it should be eaiser than this.

  14. My 74 Avanti is currently stuck at the local mechanic pending locating replacement drums and shoes. I would really appreicate some help identifying part numbers for replacements. My hope is that I can get them fast and locally as I suspect they are common parts from other brands. Thanks.
