    My 1978's oil pressure gauge  is acting odd. When you turn the key off the needle stops a 40 psi when running it shows about 80. Do you think the problem is the sender, the gauge or a wiring issue?  the engine is a 350 so if it is a sender which one. If it is a gauge can they be found. Thanks, Steve

  3. Engine stops running

    My 1978 has developed a strange problem after driving for about 20-30 mins. the engine shuts down. After it sit for about 10 mins. it starts and runs again but it quits again. So I have some questions about this issue.

    1. As the car has a closed fuel system, I unscrewed the cap and drove the car for a while and it didn't quit. Could this be the problem?

    2. I have a fuel filter that you can see the gas inside. when you turn the car off the filter drains back to the inlet level. Normal or does this indicate a bad pump.

    3. My Chevy hot rod friends said, a likely cause would be the HEI system. Replacing the electrical parts bought separately cost more than a whole new one from Summit. What are the chances this is the issue.?

    Thanks for the tips. I made some spacers about 5/8 think and put them under the rear seat bolts. Tis made the seats a lot more comfortable. A local exhaust added some stainless exhaust muffler ends, much better. I ordered a Haynes 1978 manual to try and get the cruise to woks.

    I just got home from a 1,000 mile trip in my 1978 Avanti. There are several things I would like change  and am looking for thoughts from more experienced owners.

    1. I would like to make the seat backs more straight for more support.

    2 . I do have the stock quiet tone mufflers and they seem loud to me so any ideas to make the cat quieter.

    3. best reference source for repairing the cruise control.

    I am a new owner of a 1978 Avanti 2 and I have some questions for you more experienced owners:

    1. Which vendors carry the most parts for these cars?

    2. The 350 and the turbo 400 are standard GM and use nothing weird as they are in an Avanti?

    3. Is there a good service chart for the car? Recommended Lubricants. grease points, etc.

    4. The cruise control doesn't where can I find a good troubleshooting procedure?

    5. Where is the fuse block?

    6. There was restored a while ago, what are the general problem areas I should check out.

    Does any one have or know where I can find some pictures of a stock air filter that was used used in 1974. My car has a cheap aftermarket chrome type that pretty beat-up.Also what was the original from so I can find a replacement. Thanks, Steve
