Mrelmtow....Looks like 63R1025 is coming along nicely!

Suggest that you proceed with caution when purchasing the 'Avanti Turquoise' paint......

That's my favorite Stude Avanti exterior color....however, I've seen more than one Avanti painted that color which looked WAY too blue, whereas the original Studebaker color really was more of a turquoise...Good luck!

The person I have doing the body and paint work is very familiar ( and particular) with Avantis and I know will get it correct. When at the last show together, he pointed out three different turquoise variations when I only saw one!

I'm confused.  Would Studebaker, in 1963, have built two Avanti engines with the same "sequential number."  That is, would they have built R2182 AND RS2182 in 1963 ?

I don't know but according to the production order it is R2182.

  3. I am looking for a 1963 Avanti R1 engine with serial number R-2182 or any information on it. I realize it is a longshot but who knows. The only thing I know about it is that the engine was removed from the car in 1972 or 73.

  4. A few pictures of the progress so far! The body has been blasted and is off the frame. A few interesting things have been found, some known, some not. I did not see this since they were glassed over but there were holes drilled into the fender and a bracket was on the bottom for the supercharger oil tank once installed, tank now missing. SIDE NOTE, if anyone has or knows of any of these tanks for sale, please let me know. I also found a reliable source of information regarding Granetelli R3 and R4 engines including a picture of the car at the track when loaned out to Hot Rod magazine for the article. It showed the dealer plates it wore and I was able to order up a reproduction set! I did find out that although the engine was never stamped, other than the factory numbers, it was assigned a "A" number by Paxton. Despite all the work done, I have not yet opened up the engine. When I do (hopefully soon if work permits), I will be posting pictures and findings.

Hey that's GREAT!!...you now own one of the "rare ones", right up there with #8 & #9!....I was thinking that Nels Bove might have ended up with it, as he has a taste for the rarest and the most desirable postwar Studes.

Hopefully you'll return its original 'Avanti Turquoise" exterior paint......and bring it back to HOT ROD MAGAZINE condition.......Best of luck, and KEEP US INFORMED!!....Ed:)

    It will be!

According to the former owner of the Hot Rod Magazine 1963 Studebaker Avanti test car, (63R1025), who actually purchased the car directly from the Granatellis, they told him that particular engine was stroked to gain more 'low end' torque for drag strip match races.

I guess the only way to know for sure is if someone, one day, opens up & measures that interesting Avanti R3 engine!:)

    That just might happen soon!
