  1. Thank you Gunslinger and Avanti83 for your replies.

My experience working on cars is almost nil so please bear with me as I ask these questions.

Even if we remove the vent lines above the fuel tank, there does not appear to be sufficient clearance between the top of the fuel tank and the rear seat back shelf to remove the fuel sender without bending the sender arm.  What am I not seeing?  Am I making the replacement of the sender unit more complicated than it is?

In regards to the rear seat back, it was secured to the chassis by two bolts and nuts.  We had to remove the wheels in order to reach the nuts.  Is the rear seat back fasted to the chassis using standard nuts and bolts or does it use a fastener that does not require access under the chassis and behind the wheels?

The only wires that I see entering the tank is for the fuel sending unit, therefore I do not believe that there is an electric fuel pump.

Finally, how do I edit the vehicle serial number in my AOAI profile?

  2. Working on a 1981 Avanti that has been heavily modified by the previous owner.  We have removed the rear seat and can remove the five screws (with difficulty) that secure the fuel gage sender but cannot remove the sender itself due to the fuel lines that are in the way.  Does the rear seat back shelf need to be removed in order to remove the sender unit?  If so, how do you remove the rear seat back shelf?  Among other changes it appears that the previous owner used pop-rivets to secure the rear seat back shelf to the chassis.

Additionally in order to remove the rear seat back we had to remove the tires in order to access the two nuts that secured the rear seat back.  Is this normal?

  3. The previous owner (now deceased) of my Avanti disconnected many of the switches (e.g. vent fans) and added considerable wiring connected to a module whose function is a mystery.  I would like to remove all extraneous wiring and reconnect all original equipment.  Where can I find a schematic for the 1981 Avanti?

On another subject, my mechanic has informed me that the front wheel bearings need to be replaced.  I located some on the carpartsdiscount.com website.  They list both an inner and outer front wheel (#1122948 and #1122952) bearing for the 1981 Avanti.  Do I need to purchase both?  What manual best details the chassis of a 1981 Avanti?

Thanks in advance for any and all advise.

  4. Looking for recommendations for maintaining the appearance of a dark green  Avanti.  Is the body color due to a gel coat or is the body painted?  Is there any simple method for removing small scratches?  What waxes are recommended?  How does one treat the rubber including the window seals to keep them supple?

Thanks in advance for any and all responses.

Is it the stock engine? later  Chevy engines used a reverse flow cooling system (LT-1) . If yours was reversed, or a serpentine belt setup with a stock water pump. That would be the only way there is suction on the top hose. If that is the case you need to replace the water pump with the correct reverse rotation pump.

Thanks for the heads up.  I will definitely check the direction of the water pump.

  6. I just purchased a 1981 Avanti II and have several questions:

    1. Where can I find an owner's manual?

    2. What do owners use for a "shop" manual?

    3. The car arrived without a jack.  Recommendations on where I could purchase one.

    4. After starting the car and letting it run for a while, the upper water hose collapsed and anti-freeze poured out of the anti-freeze reservoir.  We suspect possibly a faulty thermostat.  Any diagnostic suggestions would be appreciated.  If it is the thermostat where can I find info on the part number?

Thanks in advance for any and all assistance.
