  1. Hi,

I got it off the ramp and outside and definitely very wrong! Extremely jerky and then locks completely after 20 metres going forwards. Strangely it seems ok in reverse.

I have a spare transmission - it's not got the same green data label as the original one - can anyone confirm what ths spare transmission is and whether it would be ok on the Avanti? I don't know it's history so could easily not be any good either.

    Any help greatly appreciated!

  2. Thanks all!

My next plan was to drive the car and see if it performs differently with load on it etc. When you say "shorten the control rod" I assume that you mean the rod at the bottom of the engine block that connects the throttle linkage to the transmission? How I set this up was to set the throttle linkage in the engine bay with a 17/64 gap (as per the manual), with the pan removed I adjusted the rod so that the clevis dropped perfectly into the throttle linkage hole with no pre-load on the control arm. I assume that by shortening the rod I would be tricking the transmission into thinking that the throttle was opened more than it actually is.

the grommet in the gear shifter is in a pretty sad state - I had thought that was a likely issue. I will turn up a nylon bush for the moment and get the correct grommet ordered.

Thanks for the tip RE Jaguar transmissions. A very good friend of mine will definitely know somewhere to get the box overhauled if necessary.

One question though - I installed the engine and transmission as a complete assembly. How much of a nightmare is it to remove the transmission on it's own with the car on stands? It doesn't look much fun....

    cheers!

Hello mtrehy, You may indeed need to drop that trans oil pan.....What you find in the pan will probably indicate the condition of that Powershift.

If you find the pan to be relatively 'clean', dropping the trans valve body for a thorough disassembly and cleaning may just do the trick.:)

If the pan if full of 'goo', burnt fluid, and small pieces of clutch lining material, it may be time for an overhaul.:(

    Hi,

I dropped the pan and removed and thoroughly stripped and cleaned the control valve assembly and reinstalled. It wasn't particularly clean in there but nothing I would have described as horrific.

At the same time I adjusted the front and rear bands.

It's still not right though. Car is on axle stands. It seems to act normally in Reverse and 1, but 2 and D need a load of revs to get the wheels to turn. I played around with the rear band adjustment and it doesn't seem to make any noticeable difference 1 whole turn either way.

I'm pretty much out of ideas now.

Another problem, but hopefully simpler is that I am finding it very hard to adjust the gear change linkage so that I can get both Park and 1 (the 2 extremes). If I adjust the rod so I get park then I can't get 1 and vice versa.....

    Is it overhaul time?

    Thanks

  4. Hi Lou,

Not really! I did it with engine hot and running in park. went up and down through the gearbox several times but checking in Park.

Strangely if you read the manual the section "When and how to check fluid" gives your method, but the next section "When and how to change fluid" says to do it in N but I suppose it is more accurate with the volume.

I'll try it in D and see what happens. From what I've read adjusting the rear band seems simple and doesn't require dropping the oil pan, also can check the throttle linkage. I'm hoping one of these sort it out!

    Thanks

  5. Hi All,

    I hope everyone is well!

I'm restoring a 63 Avanti in the UK. Engine is R3 clone, heads, intake, etc with an Edelbrock 1406 carb. I have just refitted the engine after a full rebuild and having problems with the powershift transmission.

I have the car in the air and it will select reverse and the wheel speed seems to increase relative to engine rpm. The first few times I selected drive nothing happened, the rear wheels have now started turning in the right direction but certainly slowly and not increasing at all in relation to engine rpm. oil level is good.

Automatic transmissions are not my forte - I have the workshop manual.

Would be grateful for any pointers.

I have no way of knowing whether the transmission was ok previously (deceased estate). I do have a spare but likewise of unknown history/condition.

    Thanks in advance!

  6. Hi All,

I received the Authenticity Manual - thanks for that advice it's been pretty helpful.

I've got most of the wiring done - someone else had started installing a new front harness but made a bit of a mess of it. I've got it all re-positioned and connected up as per the manual now. Very time consuming rebuilding all the light sockets etc. The rear harness wasn't available but I've made plenty of harnesses in the past and the back part is very simple so I made this up and got it connected. It's 99% there with the wiring but need to get a few missing bits - trunk light & tilt switch, antenna & cable, courtesy light, glove compartment switch, number plate light assembly, red light bulbs for the dash, hi/lo horns.

Someone has fitted (hung in the engine bay) a screen wash bag but there's no wiring, no pipework and no washer jets... Did all Avanti's come with screen washers? If not I'm inclined to not install it on this one.

I've attached a pic of the waterpump/housing. Am I correct in thinking that the elbow (blue arrow) is not used on the Avanti and is replaced with the header tank - I've seen some pics where the header sits in this position and others where the top hose is attached here?

Also I assume I need to connect the heater hoses to the 2 blanked off plugs shown with the yellow arrows. I'm not sure what I need to buy to fit into these positions - could anyone point me in the right direction? Is this the correct water pump housing? I have attached a pic that shows a set-up with a red painted header tank but it seems like the heater hose connection (green arrow) comes directly from the pump housing...?

Sorry for all the questions! There's only 9 Avanti's in the UK (5 road registered and 4 off road) so not much info this side of the pond!

    Thanks

  7. Tom - that's great, much appreciated. I wouldn't have realised that the antenna cable was missing and would have refitted the interior without the antenna cable in place without your help! Now I need to find myself an antenna cable.

Studegary - by cold air induction, I mean that the air filter has been relocated at the front of the car and that the hose between that and the supercharger loops through the inner wing. You can see the large grey vacuum hose on this pic.

  8. Thanks Guys. Tom - does the rear harness wiring go into the trunk via the same hole as the trunk release cable? Pictures would be great if you've got any.

The car has the cold air induction modification - I'm not sure of the exact provenance of the car but will get all the numbers next time I see it (Thursday).

    Cheers

  9. Thanks guys, I will get the vin and engine numbers next week. I'm not totally sure of the origins of the car.

The other end of this mechanical cable is not attached to anything, but it's about 3 feet long and looks like it goes through the firewall.

Thanks for confirming the alternator - that means there must be another bracket somewhere!

What does a "Dome" light look like - it's shown on the wiring diagram and I assume it's an interior light at the rear of the car but not sure what I'm looking for in my boxes of junk...

Finally (today) - the long hoses that go from the heater control water valve should attach to the water pump (according to the manual). The connectors on the pump appear to have been blanked off - any idea what they are called or where I could get them?

Tom - is there any chance you could describe or show pictures of how the rear harness runs - i.e where it connects to the front harness (is it behind the dash or centre console), how it runs through the car, past the tank and into the boot (trunk)?

    Much appreciated.

    Thanks.

  10. Hi All,

I hope you are all well!

Nice to have found this forum and already obtained some very useful info - thanks.

I've found myself embarking on a significant restoration / rebuild of an Avanti in the UK. The car has not been on the road for many years - the previous owner was a huge enthusiast and had made a start on the restoration and has accumulated a vast amount of spares which I haven't yet got to grips with in terms of auditing (numerous boxes etc). I've taken on the restoration part time but it's had a few different people working on it over the years and it's not a car I am at all familiar with. The good news is that the car is sound and with all the parts available there's every chance of getting this Avanti back on the road!

The first job I am working on is the wiring and I was really hoping that some one here could help me with some questions....

The previous owner had acquired a new main loom and someone has made a start with installing it - the old loom has been removed (quite brutally) and the new loom is 50% installed. I've got the wiring diagrams and I think I'm pretty much there with it. There's a couple of odd things though that I was hoping for some advice on.... There is a heavy mechanical cable that is attached to the steel bar that crosses the instrument panel - it's just to the left of the radio as viewed by the driver. I have shown it labelled "1" on the picture attached. I'm assuming it's an earth strap - can anyone confirm this and where the other end should connect to? Also under the instrument panel there are 3 toggle switches that look like they have been added by someone - I can't see any wiring for them. The back of one of these is shown on the same picture, labelled "2", the other 2 are on the far left end of the underside of the instrument panel (when viewed by the driver) - any idea what they maybe for?

Another odd question is regarding the alternator - I found the alternator in a box with a bracket attached. Looking at the engine it appears to bolt up to the left (drivers) cylinder head. Is this correct? I have looked at a few Avanti pictures and most show it in the position shown?

While I think I'm nearly there with the main harness, someone has ripped out all the wiring backward of the main harness - apparently they thought that the new harness included all of this. Unfortunately it appears to have been fairly brutally removed and I also think some of it is now missing as I can't jigsaw puzzle it all back together. The harness is 1557426 from mystudebaker.com am I right in thinking that connector #4 which on the drawing is labelled "To Tail/Stop & Dome" and includes wires 43, 29, 28, 5-1, 47-4, 37G, 36-1 & 6 would connect to the rear harness? Has anyone purchased a rear harness and can recommend one?

I'm sorry for all of the questions but would be really grateful for any help!

    Have a great weekend.

    Matt
