The Flight-O-Matic was what Ford called them, early on, they are the same transmission as the Studebaker, Borg Warner manufactured these. I in the mid 60's to early 70's Ford renamed it to the FMX. I believe there is a difference between the earlier from the 50's Flight-O-Matic to the 60's FMX case. However when they were adopted into the Avanti I don't believe there was any update to case over these years.

I must agree, my pop had an Avanti back in the mid 90's, I have desired an R2 ever since, and after 10+ish years of searching I found the one, and his website has been so so very helpful in taking the correct steps. Learn from others mistakes so you don't make the same (sounds like something our government should learn)

Just want to add my 2 cents, with a rear mount battery it is a good idea to run a ground direct to the engine as well from the battery. No one enjoys chasing down grounding issues!

My 63R3487 - R2 has a 160mph, I am not sure when the transition took place though.
