  1. That brake booster looks like almost identical to the setup on a Chevrolet C-10 I had several years ago. All but the reservoir cap.

As far as the manifold I mentioned, I've not run across a fuel injection manifold setup that uses plastic for a manifold as Mike stated above. That's why I guessed air.

  2. Haha... those 911 guys crack me up. As I've owned several 928s over the years and am fiercely partial to them, I take perverse delight in the butt-draggers misadventures (though not in that fellow's necessitated surgery - ouch!).

I'm with Avanti83 above... cut, cut, and tennis shoes.

  3. Hi all,

I've gotten 1820 stripped of most of it's glass and interior in preparation for paint, hopefully next summer. The seals for the windshield and back glass are as hard as ABS plastic and split in places. I'm not too concerned about the windshield as it has several BB pings and scratches and I plan on replacing it.... but I've not seen a back glass for sale anywhere and I don't want to damage this one.

Have any of you happened upon a trick to removing the glass without cracking it when the seals are this hard?

    What technique did you use?

    Thanks, Brad

  4. Brad,...about your question on separating Avanti body panels....from my own experience, it is possible to separate bonded panels successfully....Once you begin a 'tear' at the panel's edge, the two panels usually can be 'torn' apart at their connecting joint cleanly.....Not all the time...but more often than not!

...which makes sense, as I said... the PS fender seam at the lower grill panel "popped" apart cleanly at the seam. Still deciding on whether to go "63 nose" or not...

Thank you all for your input.

    Brad

  5. Yep, I have done some fiberglass work myself in the past, but the way the lower grill panel is cracked I thought about taking the structure apart for the repair anyway...

Then my mind wandered and I thought to myself, "You know you like the round light 63 front end better...."

How much of a pain is it to separate the panels - any past experience? The book just says cut and bond... not a whole lot of help. OTOH, the hit separated the bottom of the fender from the grill panel anyway. I wonder if the DS will separate cleanly like that...

    Thanks for the discussion.

    Brad

  6. I browsed through all of the threads in this and the 63-64 forums and didn't come up with any threads on the subject.

In your experience, is it more cost affective to repair fiberglass body panels, or replace them?

My 72 took a pretty good whack at some point, cracking the pass front fender by the bumper bracket, the lower grill panel has some "really nice" cracks, the upper grill panel same, and the nose panel is cracked at the headlight (both) cutouts, and up at the hood hinge areas.

The car also sits lower on this corner, so I'm guessing bent or broken spring (or something).

With the labor involved in fixing the fiberglass damage, would it not be cheaper to buy the panels and have them replaced by a shop?

    Thanks, Brad

  7. Thanks. For some reason the "standard reply" I've gotten from the three places I contacted locally was "Our insurance won't allow..." Anyway, The tank is in pretty good shape really. Only the varnish on the bottom needs to be cleaned, and the bung re-brazed onto the bottom. It doesn't seem weak at all... the bung and plate just popped off when I twisted the elbow to get it out.

I have a couple more shops to call, after that..... hmmm

  8. Good morning all. I've been tearing down the car and finally got the gas tank out. It's not in bad shape but needs to have a thick layer of varnish removed from the bottom - (have chain and cleaner). One problem though was that when I put a wrench on the bottom gas feed elbow to remove it, the whole bung came off with it. I didn't put that much effort into twisting the elbow, I don't think it was brazed on too well to begin with.

Anyway... nobody locally seems at all interested in re-brazing the bung onto the tank. In lieu of not finding someone that can do it.... suggestions?

Anyone having luck with JB Weld?

    Thx, Brad

  9. Brad,

I see a couple of things lacking. On my 76, that connector is for a horn mounted on the right side of the engine bay. Do you have the Studebaker Avanti style surge tank in front and on top of the engine? The right side of the radiator is where a coolant overflow tank was usually mounted if you don't have a surge tank. If the radiator cap in connecting two pieces of the upper radiator hose, then you would not have the surge tank.

That explains part of it - My radiator/coolant setup is as you said, "radiator cap connecting two pieces of the upper radiator hose." I did find a horn in my box-O-parts. Thank you.

There are still probably four or five unexplained wires in the bundle though. Are the white wires all of the common grounds? That would explain things... My manual should be here this week.

If you can post some pics of your engine bay that would be awesome. The POs of this car were "creative" in their wiring solutions I'm finding.

    Brad

  10. 1972 Engine compartment, pass side, looking forward...

Lots of wiring with connector ends laying down on the panel forward of the AC plumbing.... what am I missing there?

As you can see, the AC plumbing is just kind of hanging down in front of the alternator.... stock layout - brackets missing?

    Thanks, Brad

  11. Finally got the seats and the carpet out today.

This car must have been flooded at one time. The seat bottom for the back seat has rusted away, and 90% of the bolts and screws holding the front seats and carpeting snapped off when attempting to remove them. I guess I get to see how straight I can drill a hole to get them out. Grrrr

The black carpet that was in the car was covering the original silvertone grey shag carpet. This must have been one pretty car when new - Bright silver finish with silver carpet and black leather any vinyl interior. I got most of the vinyl covering off and found where several generations of critters had taken up residence in the dash and center console. Again... Grrrr

I didn't know that the vinyl was glued in before the windows were put in. Most of my window seals are in poor shape anyway so I'll need to start collecting them.

I'm not sure how much the dash wiring was bastardized but some PO has run a bunch of Monster cable and speaker wire up in there too. I'll just add that to the list of things to do...

  12. Sorry to have hijacked this thread dstuff5

Very cool historical story Gunslinger. I had similar issues with a sunroof'd 928 I had... I'm 6'6" and my head always rubbed the roof on that one. lol I ended up letting my daughter drive it for a couple years.

Thanks mfg. I'll likely need a lot more parts too, if you're willing to part with more just let me know. I appreciate it.

  13. PS....If I remember correctly, rear seat lower cushions in 'later' Avantis like this '73 do not have the 'spring & wire' seat frame as, say, a Studebaker Avanti would have......the leather upholstery, I believe, was put over a shaped 'foam' material of some sort....

Well, if it'll fit, I'm not going to be picky about something nobody is likely to sit on anyway! haha... Interesting the changes from year to year - wonder why they decided to switch if indeed yours is all foam and no spring/frame.

I like that oxblood color and had thought about going to it along with two-tone black/oxblood.

Can you post some pics? Thanks!

  14. I have a 1973 Avanti ll parts car (RQB 1967) with a tilt column in good shape which I'd consider selling....but I honestly have no idea what it's worth, and quite frankly don't normally sell parts.

Do you want to make an offer on it?

What color is your interior mfg? ........since you opened the door! lol

Not interested in the column, but I do need a rear seat bottom cushion as my seat frame must've sat in water for a while and has rusted away badly....

  15. Thank you all for the warm welcome.

Yep, Brakes and fuel system were my first maintenance goals. The PO had the car running from a gas can as the fuel in the tank has turned into nasty smelling "something." Some did slosh out of the fuel line where he had the line from the tank disconnected (hence the smell), so at least the line is unclogged and there are no leaks.

My interior was all leather, and not one panel is worth saving the cover of. The roll bar cover is the best piece and it is shrunken, hard, and cracked. I'm hoping to use the cardboard from the panels to at least have good patterns to make new ones. The hard part is going to be the foam/padding.... that'll be tricky for the seats.

I read up on the 200R4 swap and at some point I would like to do that, but first things first. I will begin the teardown starting Friday and my goal is to get the gas tank out to be chain rolled and steam cleaned, then coated, and then the brake components removed (for inspection and cleaning or replacement). lol

I have an electronic shop manual on order - laptops are so handy.

I'm no stranger to expensive rebuilds/restorations having had a go at Porsche 928s for about 10 years. ...tell me about expensive interiors... In fact... that may be a good choice for front seats come to think of it if these are beyond repair. Hmmm

  16. Hello all,

I'm new to Avanti ownership but not to Studebakers. I had a 63 Lark years ago, but probably like all of you, told myself I'd one day own an Avanti. I made that happen yesterday.

I bought the car out of Southern Louisiana over the weekend (You may have seen it on Craigslist). I'd say it is in fair to poor shape except the hog troughs are solid, and it does run. The exhaust was done recently. It needs a complete brake makeover, and the interior is trash...just, really ugly bad leather pieces all over... ugghhhh The carpet looks good, but is likely toast too. Body has some stress cracks under the headlights, and a few chips/gouges below the pass side vent window (??).

It does have some nice features like cruise control, power windows, AC (don't yet know if all 72s had these). It does have the 4bbl 400 so I guess that makes it late in 72. I also researched a prior owner in Mobile AL and spoke with a gentleman who knew some history on the car. He said the PO didn't drive it much and it sat at a paint and body shop in the 90's for several years untouched. It shows 83K and he thought it wasn't much less than that 5 years ago when it was sold to the fellow in LA... so it's sat for long periods time.... Hopefully not at the bottom of a Hurricane slew somewhere.

I know about the brake kits and have seen carpet kits. I'm wondering at this point about the interior. I haven't seen any "Year One" type suppliers for these cars. Anyone have patterns for all of the A and C (roll bar) pillar pieces? Headliner? Do I need to find a wrecked car with a nice interior? :-)

Anyway, I've already read through all of the 66-83 threads. Thanks to all of you for the information I've already gleaned.
