  1. My 78 Avanti had a cheap junk radio in it when I purchased it. Is there a good replacement radio that will fit? Doesn't need to look original but similar would be nice. Just don't want one of those new ones with flashing red and green lights and washes dishes. Just a simple radio that will fit and looks period correct.

  2. I have finally got my Avanti II completed, all it took was thousands of dollars.

i am in need of a driver's side power window motor to finish up. I have been told several different things. One person said a motor from a 50's thunderbird would fit and another said an American motors. None of the parts suppliers have one so I guess I need to find a good used one. Does anyone have one for sale or is there someone that can rebuild mine?

  3. The driver side window will only go part way up or down and stops. Wait a few minutes and it will go another few inches before stopping. It seems like there is some sort of overload that heats up and resets when it cools down. If some one pushes the window button while I pull to assist the window it will go all the way. It seems to stop after a little resistance for a few seconds. Like a piece of bi-metal heating up and then cooling down.

If I need a new motor, does anyone have one? Also, are the difficult to replace?

  4. I have searched the forum and internet and cannot find a wiring diagram for the Avanti II. Mine is a 1978.

Is the diagram and wire colors the same as the 1963? My gas gage is not working. I installed a new sending unit but there were three wires on the old one which doesn't seem right. I need to get back in the trunk and check the wire colors.

  5. Still in a mess trying to get the rear quarter window seals for my 1978 Avanti II. I have been able to find two left rear but not the right. The car is in for painting and the shop has cut out the old seals and destroyed them. I was not aware these were so difficult to find. If anyone knows where to find one or has a used one. Could you please help? I spoke with a gentleman named Don a while back that had a large innovatory of parts but I've lost his number and the name of his business. I'm getting desperate!

Does anyone have the phone number for Dan Booth?

  6. HELP! Hi, Unfortunately I was just told not to remove the old seal from the rear quarter window on mr 78 Avanti II so I called the body shop that is painting it. The seals have already been cut out! Is there anything I can do? I have a brand new paint job and chrome I'm doing with no rear window seals. Can you help or make some suggestions? Even used ones could help I think.

  7. According to this forum and Bob Johnston's resource the Magnum 500 15" X 6" rims with a bolt circle of 5" X 41/2" will work o the 78 Avanti II. However when I went to the figment chart on the eBay web site for this wheel it said it was not compatible. The price is good for a new wheel compared to other sites but I'm cautious about ordering because of the conflict. I even called the store Summit Racing and they said they would fit. Just want to be sure because it is a hassle returning items sold on eBay. Also, do you have any suggestions for tires? I'm considering the raised white letters as opposed to the white walls or black walls.

    Thanks for any advice, Dave

P.S. I noticed that Gunslinger had said that this wheel was a good choice.

  8. The door panels on my 78Avanti have no means for pulling the door closed. The arm rests have no finger pull cups in them. I have been told that the car originally came with some pull straps on the door panel but I have not been able to locate any. Right now, I have to pull the doors closed with the door handles.

Is there any place I can get these straps?

  9. Basically I believed the seller because he sounded honest and the car was 600 miles away so I couldn't just go and look at it. I am very trusting person and tend to believe most people are honest. This car was a bid item and with the pictures and description it looked great. When I asked the seller if it was in good enough shape to drive back from it's location, he stated that it was in such good shape it could be driven to California. That would really have been a mistake since the gas gage doesn't work, it is only running on seven cylinders and the tires are all cracked and dry rotted. The seller took off the new tires and rims that were on it when he bought it and installed the old steel rims and rotted tires. He didn't know that I was able to see the pictures of what it looked like when he bought it about seven months ago for $3,800.00 less than what I paid for it and he did nothing to it in that time. I didn't have access to this previous listing where he bought it until I purchased it and got the serial number.

In hind site, I should have contacted the local Studebaker club in that area and offered a member $100 to go and evaluate the condition for me. Oh well, you live and learn not to be so trusting.

Although I feel that I took a beating, it was entirely my fault for trusting the seller and buying site unseen. Now I just need to make the most of it. I figure it will cost me approximately another $7,000.00 to get it to a very presentable condition with about $5,000.00 of that being a paint job. I think about $3,500.00 to get it to the condition I expected it to be in when I bought it.

  10. Just bought a 1978 Avanti on eBay and when I received it the car was nothing like the pictures and it needs bunches of work.

I need seat adjustment slides because the previous owner took them out and bolted seats to floor with steel brackets. No adjustment at all.

Also, I need lots of interior items starting with new wood overlay for the dash, if anyone makes them. The existing wood is all cracked and the finish is non existent. The number two is missing from the trunk emblem as well. This is just for starters.
