  1. Several auto manufacturers cooperate on their offerings without merging. Think Mazda and Ford, Mitsubishi and Chrysler ...
  2. I think Fiat and Chrysler merged. The merger with Renault failed to go through.
  3. FWIW, Nash and Hudson merged to form American Motors. Nash Rambler was a model. Kaiser Jeep was purchased by AMC much later, maybe 1970 or so. AMC was purchased by Chrysler around 1987, mostly for the Jeep brand. I read somewhere that Studebaker was discussed to be part of the merger, but that obviously did not work out.
  4. Both of my 64s came with the quiet exhaust system. Both have mufflers and resonators. The exhaust system with mufflers, resonators, and crossover are available from Park's Pipes.
  5. Likely stretched cable. There is adjustment just behind the x member.
  6. I tried both walnut shells and soda. The old undercoat was too soft. Both kinds of media just bounced off.
  7. The 3M 544 dries harder than I expected. Was hoping for something similar to the old asphalt base. Thought about just coating the fenders and rear wheel wells. However, all four of the Stude Avantis I own have full undercoating. Some PO may have applied the undercoat as all have been repainted at some point. I will say the hardest part of the job was removing the old asphalt undercoat. Lots of scraping, heat gun and mineral spirits. Here is pic before new undercoat. Was a little sloppy with the black paint on the metal bits since I had already decided to coat the entire bottom.
  8. I have just finished undercoating one of the 64s. Used 3M rubberized #544. Took about 3 gallons using a cheap tcp global undercoat gun.
  9. There is a shaft from the distributor that drives the oil pump. The pin might have sheared. First, check that the distributor is seated correctly?
  10. not sure where you got type 2. my workshop manual specifies type a suffix a on page 4 of the lubrication section. I believe a substitute is dexron.
  11. FWIW, change the front pads. The Dunlop system has stops when pads are worn so they do not contact rotors.

  13. I have Isky ST5 in one of the R1s. 4speed with 3.54 R/A. a little doggy at the start, but sure picks up around 3,000 rpm!
  14. AFAIK modern tires have a short life, maybe 5 years. I have a set of BFG, 205R15, on one of the Avantis, maybe 12 years old, always in garage, they have cracked sidewalls. I also have a set of Coker Bias tires, 6.70x15. They are about the same age and still look good. Bought some Coker American Classic, 670R15, last year. Too soon to tell how they hold up.
  15. Both R5408, 4spd with A/C, and R5423, Auto with A/C, have the cooling kit that ducts air from the cowl vents to the transmission tunnel installed. Of course, both could have been modified after production.
  16. Do later Avantis have the Studebaker transmission cooling fix? In a service bulletin, Studebaker specified a kit that was installed where cool air from the cowl vents was ducted to the transmission.
  17. Studebaker Avantis are only 63 and 64 year models. One of the items are the door catches made by Mercedes. I discounted the disk brake pistons as they were made by Bendix under license from Dunlop. Maybe count the ball bearings in the super charger. I believe they were made in Germany.
  18. Working on R5423. I have removed the undercoating. In some spots, the fiberglass is very dry/porous and somewhat brittle. Any ideas on how to remedy? I have used penetrating expoxes, such as those from West systems, on plywood before. Should I do something similar? Leave it alone and coat with epoxy primer? I plan on reapplying the rubberized undercoat, 3M Dynatron Dyna-Pro, similar to the factory, to protect the fenders and other parts of the underbody from rocks etc. Any ideas welcome. thanks
  19. There have been suggestions on this forum that an 8" booster from a 60-70 mopar b body will work. There is also a post on this forum in the trivia section that indicates an 8 3/4" mopar hemi booster is the same.   21. check to see if this tube runs alongside the fuel line. if so, likely the fuel return line. most 63s had a special "T" from the outlet side of the fuel pump that returned some of the fuel to the tank. later cars had a fuel filter with a glass bowl that provided the same function.

  23. J12YC has Copper core. I believe current plug is RJ12YC. if you use resistor plugs do not use resistance wires.
  24. workshop manual specifies J9Y, however, service letter updates this to J12Y with J10Y being one step colder as Dwight states.
  25. I purchased a 64 R1, with A/C and auto, last fall for $4500. This car spent its life in Florida so frame, hog troughs etc were in great condition. It was apart, but complete, with a claimed rebuilt engine and transmission. There were many new parts in boxes including parking lamp assemblies, body rubber gasket set and dash pad. Your hog troughs seem to be ok, but the frame sure looks crusty.
