You might start with checking the tension on the spring in the end of (just under the aluminum cap) power steering control. It should just be snug enough to allow the spool to still spin. Otherwise, you may get the symptoms you are experiencing.

A few months ago, I purchased a 1963 parts car. It of course has round headlights (I have a 1964). I believe the covers are glass. Does any one know how I can tell for sure? They are heavy and sound like glass when 'thunked'. The markings say 63RQS. Additionally, there is a marking of a circle with two triangles, one inverted over the other. I can't use them and plan to put them on e-bay so they can get to someone who needs them. I want to make sure that I list them correctly.

Thanks, Bob. that picture is just what I was looking for. Looks like you have the 4speed transmission as the hole is there for the clutch rod. If I could ask one more favor, any idea how big the hole is?

Hi all,

My 64 Avanti appears to be missing the plate that bolts onto the engine side of the firewall for the steering column. Additionally, it looks like the hole in the firewall was 'adjusted' sometime in its previous life. Does any one know where I can get the missing plate? Can any of you with an empty engine bay get me a photo of the firewall where the steering column passes through - preferably without the plate so I have some idea of how to repair this area?
