  1. Technically, in Nebraska the law states that a front and rear license plate be displayed. I have never displayed the front one on R1135 for the past 28 years, and not on my 85 for the last 3 years. Only once in that time about 15 years ago was I stopped for that (my kids were small and thought I was going to jail, but that's another story!). I never liked the looks of a front plate and felt that it restricted airflow.

  2. The center bell crank assembly which you said moved up/down 1/8 -3/16" should move sideways, not up and down. My 85 did the exact same thing. Dan Booth advised me on the repair as I purchased the parts through him. It corrected 90% of the wander. I need to replace the power steering tie rod ball /end and that should get me back to "no wander". I have the highest respect and praise for Dan Booth . He goes above and beyond in my opinion.

  3. Does anyone know if the power steering ram tie rod end for my 85 Avanti is available through parts vendors only or possibly NAPA, Autozone, Oreilly , etc? Replaced the bell crank from Dan Booth a couple of years ago which helped immensely, but there is still play coming from that tie rod end. Hate to tear it apart unless I know there is a replacement readily available.

  4. Lancer,

Checked the wheels and here is what I have :

     1) All have a 4" backset and same 4.5 x5 bolt pattern.

    2) 2 wheels (that were on the rear) have a 3/4" spacer  attached. It would push the wheel farther to the outside or it is because the rear axle is narrower. Honestly I never noticed . You can take the spacer off of course.

    3) Studegary is correct as I still have the stude kingpin/ bellcrank front end. Makes me wonder about what type of rear end it is (GM or other) by the use of the spacer.

    4) No markings or stamping on any  of the rims that I can find.

    5) They are true wire wheels and they even have the Avanti center cap in them.

    6) If you go to "Bob's Studebaker resource directory Avanti database" and look up my 1985 serial #4227 you can at least see the rims on the car. You can pm me at ddwetovick @hamilton.net with  a phone # and I can text you some pics of the wheels. With work I probably won't be able to do that until the weekend.

I am located in central Nebraska. I would probably remove the tires as they are still good enough for a trailer, spare, etc.

  5. Lancer,

I have a set of 4 wheels /tires I am willing to part with. They are true wire wheels that came off my 85 Avanti. (I'm just not a wire wheel guy.) Tires look good, just an all season but are a few years old.  There is a ding in one rim from a previous owner curb check but never seemed to cause a problem. Let me know if you would like pics or are interested.

  6. Thanks Silverstude. Talked to a really nice tech rep at Allied /Carling on Monday and described my situation. He said to email him some pictures of the switch and they would come up with a replacement. Tuesday I took the switch apart one more time , completely cleaned the inside, buffed and rearched the contacts, applied some new dielectric grease and put back together. Lights are working as they should.

  7. Does anyone have or know of a replacement switch for the Carling 9714 headlight rocker switch? Mine has gone bad. I have taken it apart, cleaned and tried to no avail to repair. Headlights come on but with no park or dash lights. Park lights work in the "park" position, just not in the full "on" position. Can jumper a wire across so they work together , so I know it is in the switch. Any ideas for a replacement? This is on my 85.

  8. Having hauled cars/trucks for many years, hauling on a car trailer is the only way to go. No worry about the tranny and you have far better handling and braking ability (as long as your trailer is equipped).

  9. Resistor and wires are still intact as is the coil. I was putting a test light on the coil terminals, should I test at the resistor as well? Is it possible the coil itself is bad? Since this is the Chrysler conversion, I wasn't sure about it.

  10. Just replaced the starter drive on 63R1135. While reconnecting the cables I snapped the starter solenoid. Received a new one from SI Friday and installed. It spins the engine but won't start. Wires/cables are exactly the same, and there is power to the coil/ distributor ( a Dave Thiebeault Mallory conversion years ago), but no spark at the plugs. The car obviously ran/ started fine before. Did I overlook something, or is it just a coincidence, any suggestions for a fix? Could it be the coil or some other problem. Test light shows power to the coil w/ key on as it should, but I'm not an electrical person.

  11. I am having problems w/ the headlights turning on in the 85. Sometimes they turn on as should, others just the park lights would only come on. The rocker switch has a normal feel and sound, and hate to repeatedly keep turning on/off in an effort to activate, Two weeks ago I took apart the junction relay under the hood near the reservoir and cleaned. No change. The dimmer functions normal when the lights are on. Any ideas where to look for this short or problem?

Got stopped last night trying to make it home 5 miles following my wife. Luckily they came on as I was explain to the cop. He still followed me as a safety precaution.

  12. Didn't know what an Avanti was til the spring of 1982. My Uncle Ted was always an avid sports car collector and I went after graduation to CA to work with him.

After giving me the house tour and of my living quarters, we stepped into the garage and there was 63R1135. WOW! What a car! He had a lot of other cars through the years but that car was "a keeper".

He commented on the fact that this car was different from the everyday run of the mill vehicles out there, and he liked getting noticed in a car that not too many people had.

I was already a car/pickup nut and this just fueled my love for classics.

Some years later I was able to acquire it from him as he couldn't drive anymore. Whenever he flew back to NE I would pick him up at the airport in the Avanti so he could ride in it again. I always felt very honored that out of all my cousins and relations that I was the one that he trusted to take care of it and keep in the family.

The car had 34K when I got it, now has 89K. I have driven it more miles than he did. My children have grown up with it, is part of the family, and definitely is "a keeper".

  13. Finally got RQB4227 back from the front end shop today. Front end, brakes, bushings, exhaust all done. Because one of the original wire wheels is a bit out of round (and bent due to previous owner curb check), am thinking of replacing all 4 w/ American Racing wheels that look like the 63's hubcaps. Anyone use these or know which mod/or number they might be? Have new white letter tires ordered as well.
