What was the internal 'fail safe'  featured in very early McCulloch (but not the later Paxton) superchargers to help stop their ball drives from 'burning up' in hard use ?

EXACTLY CORRECT!.....Early outer races were not pinned and were designed to begin to rotate as an automatic 'last resort' to save the ball drive assembly.
