Memory says answer 3:   fifty six. I'm assuming these were the so-called marine engines?

Sorry, fifty-six is incorrect.....and they were all normal Avanti R2 automotive engines...some later converted for marine use I believe.

Any other thoughts here?

80 (4) is ringing a bell.....rumor was it was an executive in a fairly high position with Studebaker who squirreled those out after the cessation of Avanti/R2-powered Studebaker production.
