Black Avantis!

One interesting fact that came to light from studying all known Studebaker Avanti production orders is that no 1963 Avantis factory  painted 'Avanti Black' came through with a black (fawn/black) interior....True?

This sounds like a 50/50 proposition.  I'm no Gambler (and no expert), but..............I suppose it's possible on a special order - kinda doubt the company would do it though if it was not a stated option.

False

I thought that I had said/entered this shortly after you posted the question, but again my response did not appear.  When I went to (re)enter it, "False" popped up on the screen.

EDIT:  Didn't Tompkins have an Avanti like that?

False it is.  My 1963 Avanti, 63R1250 (the 250th Avanti) is the 16th black Avanti and the first black Avanti with a black interior (actually black & fawn, as all 1963 models had fawn dashes and upper trim).

Long ago, I went through the first about 260-270 production orders and made note of each black Avanti.  From my research, I started with the first car and skimmed through production orders, stopping at #1356.   By this point, black cars were few and far between. As you know, Studebaker switch from black to gray, then later in production, brought back the black painted cars, as an extra cost option.    As you can tell, Black with red interiors were the most popular.

63R-1013: Black w/red interior
63R-1015: Black w/red interior
63R-1017: Black w/red interior
63R-1019: Black w/red interior
63R-1020: Black w/red interior
63R-1021: Black w/red interior
63R-1026: Black w/red interior
63R-1029: Black w/red interior
63R-1150: Black w/red interior
63R-1156: Black w/elk interior
63R-1160: Black w/red interior
63R-1161: Black w/red interior
63R-1193: Black w/red interior
63R-1202: Black w/red interior
63R-1213: Black w/red interior
63R-1250: Black w/black interior (mine)
and continuing....
63R-1257: Black w/red interior
63R-1297: Black w/tourquoise interior
63R-1356: Black w/elk interior

Yep, Lew is correct here with FALSE! (and I guess he should know!!)....Lew's '63 Avanti is gorgeous, restored by himself and noted Avanti specialist Brad Bez.

While we're on the subject of black Avantis, I'll take this opportunity to again mention I'd like to know the whereabouts of '63 Avanti R4175, another 'Avanti Black' factory job with, as Lew mentions, the more common red/fawn regal interior.

Gary,...The Tompkins Avanti was/is the R4175 car.

Wondering if there are any other AOAI/SDC members who follow this forum own or know of a '63-'64 Studebaker Avanti factory 'AVANTI BLACK' car?....Responses welcome!

I remember there was/is a pristine 'Avanti Black' '64 R2 once owned by Ken Neel from Washington state.

I remember there was/is a pristine 'Avanti Black' '64 R2 once owned by Ken Neel from Washington state.

It has been almost 30 years since I have seen this car, after Mr Neel passed away ,Gary Johnson sold it to Mike Nagel, it spent some time in Southern California . Nagel then  traded it back to AvantI Northwest for a new Blake Avanti.   It was a magnificent car.

Gary resold the Neel car and I believe it is still in the North West. Gary and I bought another 1964 factory black , R1 , air , auto, from Clyde Stelings who lived in one of the Studebaker Brothers mansion in the Monrovia , Ca area. This car was also sold to some one in the North West thru Avanti Motors.

63R-1161: Black w/red interior

I have owned #63R-1161 for about 13 years now. The 2nd owner (I am the 3rd owner as far as I know) painted it burgundy, but that is all chipping off and the original black clearly shows through. The engine compartment and interior of the trunk are still black. Underneath all of the trim is black. I got the build sheet for it, and am currently in the process (finally) of getting it back to "Avanti Black". Hope to have it done within the next year or so.

Interesting 'Avanti Black' with Fawn/Elk interior '63 Avanti currently advertised on e-bay.....This Avanti looks quite nice, however, as its serial number (63R1154) isn't mentioned on Lew's list, it probably did not leave the factory painted black!:(
