Drumming sound help

My newly purchased 1980 has a drumming sound between 30 and 35 MPH. If anyone else had and fixed this, where did you put the sound deadening?

No ideas? It doesn't matter what gear I am in or not in, it seems to be a low resonance drumming or drone  like a panel vinbrating if that helps.

Well I would have someone ride along in the back seat to see if they can spot the location of the noise. If not I would jack up the rear axle to get the rear wheels able to spin, safely with some stands, and run it through the gears with someone able to move around the car listening for the location. Got to start somewhere and this would maybe give you some idea. My 1991 convertible has zero external noises and rolls like it is on rails.

OK thanks. I had not considered U joints or bearings, honestly I am thinking more a larger panel that was resonating. So I will chack all of this out and get back with everyone. Thanks!

Our polyester does not resonate. Sound deadening material does not have the same effect as it has on metal cars. I would try to find the source of the sound and remove that. The driveshaft is a suspect, as the exhaust.

Since it only does it at a specific speed I would agree with the driveshaft balance theory.  Sometimes vibrations balance out after a certain point...something like exhaust would simply change tone or get worse as it strikes the frame.

I worked on a 76 that had a vibration, and it turned out to be the tail shaft bushing where the driveshaft yoke slides in and out.

These ujoint, while they don't feel sloppy, don't have a grease fitting and look dry and crusty. I have a pair coming my way, and we'll see if that fixes it. Thanks!

Not yet. I had a boo boo with her and she's getting her right fender repaired at a local shop. I hope I can have her back soon!
