Thank you, mfg - I did exactly that.
I am still hearing a "whine" coming from the supercharger. I ask if this is normal, because:
1. Although my car was factory equipped with a supercharger, it was missing when I bought the car, and have since had a rebuilt supercharger from Myers Studebaker installed, and never drove the car with the supercharger installed until now; and
2. I heard no whining noise for the first 12 miles or so that I drove it (all on city streets, no highway / freeway driving). Then, only after driving for about 12 miles, a loud whining sound began to come from under the hood. It's coming from the supercharger.
Is this a normal supercharger sound? If so, why would it not make this sound until the car was driven about 12 miles? It makes this noise when I start it up.
I'm afraid to drive it for fear of causing damage to some component.
Thank you

I bought some Type F at Auto Zone yesterday but haven't put it in yet - should I buy something else?

Curiously, my original 1964 Studebaker Avanti Owners Manual makes no mention of the Supercharger. Moreover, the Shop Manual also has no supercharger-related maintenance and repair sections. In fact, the shop manual only mentions the supercharger in connection with how to remove an Avanti engine that has a supercharger on it.
Why is this? I want to know what type of fluid to put in my supercharger, and how high to fill it - there are 2 small indented "dots" on the dipstick but I don't know what fluid to use and to what level to fill it.
Other Studebaker forums say use the old Type "F" fluid used in older Ford cars.
Thank you as always for any insight.

Thanks for the advice, Warren. My original ignition switch bezel still has its ears intact but I will order an aluminum one as you advised. I'll check the Studebaker Int'l catalog. Thanks again.
-
Thank you, Silverstude. I fiddled with the ignition switch as you recommended and I got the spring and the retainer aligned and now the switch seems to be securely in place and is not loose. I hope it stays that way. I re-connected the battery and started it and no more sparks. Thank you very much for your recommendations.
Now for the whining sound. Power steering? Supercharger? Belt(s)? It never ends.

I picked up my '64 Studebaker Avanti R-2 from the mechanic It has a rebuilt starter, a rebuilt alternator, a new solenoid, as well as a rebuilt power brake booster, new front brake calipers, and multiple other repairs.
While I was driving home, I began to hear a whining sound coming from under the hood. I pulled over and stopped the car to look under the hood. As I removed the ignition key from the switch, I noticed the entire ignition key cylinder was loose and was jiggling around behind the instrument panel. Sparks began to fly from behind the dashboard in the area of the ignition key cylinder. I removed the key and when I tried to re-insert it, the sparks began again just as I touched the key to the cylinder but did not insert it.
I disconnected the battery and had the car towed home.
Today, with the battery disconnected, I fiddled with the ignition switch and the chrome retainer ring that holds it in place from the front of the instrument panel, and it seems I got it back into place so it isn't jiggling around loose.
Is it safe to re-connect the battery and try to start the car? I don't want to cause an electrical fire.
And what could the whining sound be? Someone suggested perhaps the loose ignition switch and crossed wires may have caused the starter to engage.
What do you Avanti experts make of this? Thank you for any suggestions.

Regarding the R2 air cleaners: I purchased an air cleaner for my '64 Avanti R2 and I'm now told that the air cleaner I got is really for a '63. They told me this because the two air filters are too long to fit inside the air cleaner housing, and one of them protrudes outside the housing. Is this true? Or do I just have the wrong air filters? What is a '64 air cleaner supposed to look like? Any help is appreciated. Thanks.
-
Thank you for the information. I will check with Jon Myer, from whom I purchased the air cleaner. I have a '64 Avanti and I wanted a '64 filter, NOT one that belongs on a '63.
-
Jeez - I specified that I have a '64 model and wanted a '64 style air cleaner. Is there a different style of filter element that will fit inside? I haven't driven the car yet with the supercharger installed, as it has some starter and alternator problems which I am addressing soon.
-
That makes sense, and it looks like that is what will happen when the hose is connected.
Many thanks to all of you who responded. It is so valuable to have all this knowledge available.
-
Gunslinger, not sure what you mean by "outside of the filter element." My air cleaner was shipped to me with two small filter elements that I'm told are to fit in tandem, one behind the other. When assembled and the lid is attached with a wing nut, the end of the 2nd filter protrudes slightly past the end of the air cleaner, leaving a bit of the filter element exposed. The metal tube appears to be leading in to the air cleaner next to one of the filters.
-
Thank you. I agree and also favor cleaner burning engines. Based on the responses above, I was wondering if connecting the crankcase vent to the air cleaner would have any adverse impact on how the engine runs or performs.
-
I have an original-style air cleaner, though not the actual original one that came with the car. It is supposed to be a duplicate of the original. What would be the risk of installing a hose, as original, and connecting it to the air cleaner and to the crankcase / road draft tube?
-
Thank you very much, Gunslinger and AvantiFred. This is information is very helpful and exactly what I needed to know. I purchased the supercharger and air cleaner from Jon Meyers, so I am sure he will have the parts I need. Thank you again for your responses.

I recently had a rebuilt supercharger and air cleaner assembly installed on my '64 R-2 Avanti. There is a small L-shaped metal tube that sticks out of the side of the air cleaner. Mine has nothing attached to it. I have seen pictures of other Avanti R-2's that have a rubber hose attached to this air cleaner fitting, and the hose is directed downward. What is this hose and where is it supposed to go? What does it connect to at the other end? Thanks for any information.

J Boyle - yes, that would make a nice display. Signature makes (or made) 1:18 and 1:32 scale Avantis; Minimarque made a 1:43; Automodello is coming out with a 1:43; Franklin Mint made a 1:24; and Johnny Lightning made a 1:64.
Who makes a scale auto transport truck? All but the Signature and Johnny Lightning models would be too expensive for me to fill up a miniature auto transport truck.

Gunslinger: You are probably right about "LOS ANGELES 58" being a distribution center. That area is very heavily industrial and not a likely location for a retail automobile dealership - then or now.
-
I remember seeing these advertised in the back of car magazines in the 1960s as a novelty item.

Thanks for the replies!
TMA62: The ship via box says: "43 NJ WAB ATSF HOBART RBTSN" I assume "ATSF" means Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe railroad. HOBART RBTSN may be an abbreviation for "Hobart Robertson," both of which are street names in Los Angeles. Or, it may be the name of a trucking company. Any deciphering of this entry is appreciated.
DAPY: I don't have the window sheet. All I have is this production order that I just received from the Studebaker Museum. It lists the options on the car, and one of the options listed is "51A 670 WHT ALL STATE TIRES" -- so it appears to be one of those Sears promotional cars with Allstate whitewall tires.
Is there a way to find out the original selling dealer?
-
I just received a copy of my '64 Studebaker Avanti production order from the Studebaker National Museum. I have three questions and I hope some of you can help:
1. The last entry on the list of optional equipment is "99 TAG SEARS AVANTI PROMOTION." What is this? I checked the list of optional equipment on Bob Johnstone's site and don't see a code 99.
2. The destination is "Los Angeles 58 Calif" -- is this the location of the dealership to which the car was delivered? Or some large delivery depot where the vehicles were trucked in and dropped off for eventual delivery to the dealerships? "Los Angeles 58" is now Los Angeles 90058, which is south Los Angeles / Vernon.
3. If it is the dealership, does anyone know the name of a Studebaker dealership in Vernon, CA in late 1963?
Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Regnalbob, thank you very much! This is exactly what I was looking for.

How many '64 Studebaker Avantis were equipped with both the supercharged engine and power windows? I've seen statistics showing 281 R-2 1964 Avantis (Johnstone's website), but also want to know how many had the power window option. Does anyone have that info or know where to find it? Thanks for any help.
