  1. Welcome!

    What do you fly?

I'd love to find a restored late 50s-early 60s Areo Commander, 310, Beech 18/Twin Bonanza/Travel Air or similar biz-plane of the era to take photos with my Avanti.

You'd end up with the type of shot they used to sell both the cars and planes back in the day. I've always though of the Avanti as the type of car a wealthy private pilot would have had back in the day.

Cessna Citation Soveriegn. 6 months old. Still has that "new plane" smell

  2. Thanks to a tip from Avanti owner Chuck Kinzer, I have been able to add Ricky Dolenz of the Monkees to the list of celebrity Avanti owners on www.theavanti.net. Dolenz was the first owner of one of five 1989 Avanti Convertible Rally/Sport models. More here: http://www.theavanti.net/dolenz.html

Micky Dolenz Avanti listed for sale right now on eBay. It's item #150885985955 JimO

  3. I went for a quick ride with the Avanti today after installing the correct battery. While cruising along on the local highway in the right lane a big Chevy pickup comes up along side, beeps the horn and gives me a thumbs up and takes off!! Love this car!!! JimO :)

  4. It's possible you purchased or had someone install a 3EH battery. They are about the same width and length but are 9" high. The correct size is 3EE (height is about 8-5/8") and is available at several places. My recently restored avanti has a 3EE Interstate battery the model is called a Workaholic. Tractor Supply will have them in stock probably and your local FLAPS if they don't have one in stock and probably order one.

I think that is exacly the problem. I just called my buddy that drives the local Interstate battery truck and he's going to drop off a 3EE thanks!!!!!

  5. what is the most correct battery available that will fit in the correct underhood postion? I have a a correct shape battery now but it's 9" tall. Too tall for the mounting brackets and it actually doesn't let the hood close correctly, the hood hits the battery when closing. I've heard that there is possibly a retro kit for a conventional battery and some folks have moved thier batteries to the trunk but I want to leave it the way it left the factory. Thanks in advance. Jim O

  6. Hi gang - I apparently have a heater core leak in my 63. The passenger side carpet is soaked with antifreeze. The previous owners have diconnected the heater hoses at some point but I want to make it correct so the core will have to come out from repair or exchange. Is it a pain or pretty straight forward? Thanks in advance. JimO

  7. It doesn't matter whether the car has a/c or not as the a/c stuff doesn't interfere...it should be mounted next to the steering column on the metal cross brace (Z-bar) that goes across under the dash. If it's there, it should be quite obvious. It will have several wires leading to and from it.

Well this car doesn't have the can with the circuit board. I have the new circular board but no can to put it in. I've been looking at the Stud Intl catalog and they sell the rectangular complete replacement unit, so I might order one of those since I don't have the can. What do you think?? JimO

Ok Thanks I'll look again but if it's that obvious it must not be there thus the tach inop. It'll be nice to see some rpm's on the gauge. Jimo

  9. Look under the dash on the passenger side. The tach sending unit is mounted adjacent to the steering column...either a round can or a rectangular box. Either will have wires attached and are quite obvious once you look there. More than likely you have the round spam can if it's a '63. To be a late '63 your car's serial number would probably be in the upper 4000's. I used to own R4341 and it had the round sending unit.

I looked high and low and couldn't find it, maybe that's why the tach doesn't work. I have ac so maybe it's hidden?? Is it mounted on the dash or fire wall? I ordered a round unit to be on the safe side. thanks JimO

  10. I went to order a new tach drive circuit board from Studebaker Intl a few minutes ago and they asked a question I couldn't answer. They need to know if it's for an early 63 or later 63. They come in either round or rectangle. Where is the board? and what is considered early versus late? Thanks again for your help. Jim O

  11. You might check with Dave T-Bow (Dave Thibeault) at 976-897-3158 and see whether he might have reproduction lexan lenses. I've never heard of anyone repopping those lenses in glass. When good used glass lenses come up on Ebay every now and then they usually go for some big money. Jon Myers or Nostalgic Motors may have good used glass lenses.

Exactly what headliner parts do you need? You can get reproduction headliners and roll bar covers from Studebaker International. The roll bar repro is solid, not padded but fits the same. I would think one could be covered in foam and vinyl to look original but can't say for sure on that. Jon Myer told me himself that he has a large supply of repro headliners. Whether he has roll bar covers I can't say.

    Thanks!!! I'm placing orders!!
