  1. Yes, mine uses the rear window molding as the antennae. I just tightened the connection which help both the FM and the AM fade. Still a bit of ignition noise on the AM. I will clean the connection and then check connection under dash.

Again, thank to all of you...never would have found the trim/antennae without much time.

  2. On my 75 I have an intermittent radio static, static most of time on both AM and FM...of course worse on AM. I have short periods <5 minutes when the static stops on both AM and AM. Alternator speed or charge rates is no factor.

I will have clear signal, but sometimes road bump with initiate the static. I think it is a lose antenna connection.

Where is the antenna and antenna cable routing? Original radio and works well.

    Thanks

  3. I often purposely drive my Avanti to upscale meetings or fun raisers. My 1975 looks OK, but it is $10,000 car. I have great fun tweaking these self absorbed people with their $150,000 to $300,000 custom Caddies or some EURO car which I can not pronounce the name. Often the valet guys will park my old Avant right out from in their favorite spot of honor. And, as you describe the people just love it and ask questions.

  4. Tom, just for fun. I looked up the specs for Avanti and for current Camaro, and they aren't all that far apart:

Avanti is 192.4" long, 70.3" wide, and 53.8" high

5th gen Camaro (2010-15) is 190.5" long, 75.5" wide, and 54.2" high (extra width might allow length to fit OK)

3rg gen Camaro (1982-87) is closer at 192.5" long, 72.8" wide, and 50.2" high (probably a better fit on Avanti than 5th gen, but either might work)

Where are specs for Taylor Swift ? High Res pics of Taylor would be helpful

  5. It almost looks like the Avanti was Photoshopped into the scene. It doesn't look like a natural photograph parked at that spot.

Lew, the sun is low and casts tall shadows. The Avanti is making an appropriate shadow on the wall in alignment with the telephone poles in the pic. They did some effect on the pics.

Hey, thanks again for the wonderful time in St. Louis. You were the hardest working man...sorry did not get to say hello.

  6. Brad,

I had same problem with my tank and did not want to buy new. I could find no shop willing to weld it. I finally practiced-up on a scrap metal and brazed it myself. Later I did find shops (smaller) that would. The main thing for safety is FILL it with water (no voids), vapors explode, liquids do not.

In past years I have seen 100,000+ gallon gasoline storage tank leaks welded while full of gasoline, the liquid gasoline flashes off and burns as the weld bead is laid down.

  7. Well Tom I am no authority on Moo Moo's or Taylor Swift; however, Taylor would look good in most anything and maybe nothing. Here are couple of pics. I bought from Summit $60 part 11115; decent quality especially for $60 and comes with plastic coated cable & lock to secure under auto if parked out over night on a trip.

The fit suits me, my various Corvette covers are too small for the Avanti. Maybe helps others size a cover

  8. Cowboy, give Jon Myers a call. He rebuilt the control valve on my 83. He will give you a sermon on what to do.

When you get it up and running be prepared for a little air in the lines. So, for a while there will a little glitch in the steering.

As Steve says the air will work its way out over time; however, if you crack the hose fitting loose a bit and actuate the ram you can clear much of the air...sort of bleed it.

  9. I'm a 35+ years proud NRA member and though I'm sure it wasn't their intent to show an Avanti in their promo, it makes me even more proud.

No political content intended but I understand it could be inferred.

The audio is not good on the youtube post I used. If you go to http://www.nranews.com/home/video/freedoms-safest-place-my-honor/list/feature

, the Clarke video is better and several other good videos

  10. Brad, congratulations ! You will have great fun with your Avanti and others will enjoy seeing you drive it. Just post questions here and you will get help very quickly.

1.Since you are in AL, A/C and insulation is a must. Basic are:

Wrap the exhaust pipes to keep the heat out of the cabin firewall and floor $30

As you do you carpeting, use insulation to reduce heat and quiet the cabin $80

Consider removing the big GM 6A and converting to a Sandig and 134A

2.The 400 cu in SBC engines get uninformed urban legend bad press.

These are torque monsters. When stripped of the air pumps and pollution junk and timed properly like a SBC should be, they perform quite well. Racers love them.

I just drove my 1975 with 400 SBC 2,000 miles from Houston to the St. Louis meet ave 20 mpg @ 75/80 mph. happy to advise when your ready.

    Joe

  11. I can not speak specifically to your 78; however, the earlier ones can be opened via the cabin access (on deck) behind back seats. There is panel that opens up...you can access trunk. On the trunk latch there is a screw driver slot which can be rotated with a long handle screw driver.

99% sure your 78 is the same, Try to post pic later

  12. I had the opportunity to drive the Avanti today on a 80 mile trip. I am quite pleased with just the new rear sway bar. Even the ride on straight level roads was improved, no flipping the tail in the air when crossing a railroad track. The ride is a bit firmer (not expected) but took much of the tail dance out while crossing road expansion joints, etc.

Need to have CaffeineRacer to return from his week-end outing to help me with front sway bar

  13. While in St. Louis at the International meet, Dan Booth (Nostalgia) had a couple of sway bar (torsion bar) kits. He has a '7/8 inch kit' and a '1 inch kit'. He says the 1 inch is a bit strong unless really into performance driving.

I bought the 7/8 inch kit which has a 7/8 front bar and 3/4 inch rear bar plus the front rubber and brackets.

I installed the rear 3/4 inch bar replacing the old 5/8 inch bar. The cornering is better with less roll with only the rear 3/4 bar. Also it seems less rocking and rolling when passing over rough sections of road. Rear is easy to install. Dan says front is a pain and need two people, report on that later.

  14. Just to stir the pot a bit more, a 400 SBC can be balanced internally (usually externally). I have two of them in my other cars with two different fly wheels and tranny set-ups.

Love the trivia questions ! Thanks for doing them.

  15. Dennis is a big fan of Avanti. In May during the Houston Keels & Wheels Concours d'Elegance I went fishing for a long day with Dennis in Gulf of Mexico. He is the real thing, very bright guy (PhD chem) and very calm guy. He was good just to talk about most anything; however, when the camera comes on he is "ON" and his demeanor is more TV.

Here is a pic fishing around the off-shore rigs (fish like the rigs !!!). The long moustache is the real, here is a pic unwaxed.

  16. RQB3263....H ere is a very quick and easy mod to help move hot air from Avanti engine bay.......In the summer...remove the 4 bolts securing the hood latches to the fender well...procure new 3/8 dia bolts 1/2 inch longer than originals....place a 1/2 inch long by 3/8 inch inside dia. spacer under each hood latch (4 total) and secure with the new bolts ....untill fall then reverse the pro and store the spacers on top of the latch mechinism till next spring.....this will raise the rear of your hood up about 5/8 inch and allow engine heat to escape....this is the second summer for this on 3263 and it has to help....I just returned from a 3300 mile road trip with no problems of any kind cooling or otherwise...A shoutout of thanks must be given to John, Betty, Linda, and Micheal Myer and crew in Duncan Falls, Ohio for the wonderful hospitality and fine work they did on my car...Thanks again gang....BILL RQB3263

    Bill,

My Corvette drag racing buddies and I have been doing your airflow fix for over 40 years. The geometry is a little different and not as easy to raise the latches so we just made a 'cone extension' tip that does the same thing raising the hood about 2 inches for the track.

Your 1/2" latch raise is much easier on the Avanti.

    Joe

  17. Mark,

That is great news. I have not kept a tally, but it seems we have had 5 of our Avanti's take awards in Concours d'Elegance this season. Interestingly, they have been in different classes such as your Sports Car class and mine in American Muscle Car class.

I encourage others to participate in Concours and other shows, people love the Avanti. There were Olds 442, GTO, Shelby Mustang participants giving me the evil eye and whispering under their breath.

    Joe
