  1. Hi Ron,

Motor is below the dashboard on the passenger side, above the passengers foot well. The carpeted box above the passenger foot well must be removed.(You can reach up through the recirc door at the passenger foot well and feel / turn the squirrel cage blower attached to the motor.

The carpet must be peeled back just below the dash pad to reveal the screws holding that portion of the box to the underside of the dash. The recirc door on the footwell right wall is all part of this same box. There are screws hidden in the carpet on the right footwell wall around and below the recirc door that must be removed.. Remove the passenger side speaker grill. I do n iot remeber the total # of screws , it has been yrs since I replaced the motor and resistor assembly on my '89. Good luck.

  2. Is the '87 wiper switch on the steering column turn signal stalk like my '89? If so, then it a standard GM product, Saginaw steering gear. Not an easy replacement job. Never done it, just heard the task of replacement is time consuming. A chev dealer should be able to do it since the 87 car is essentially a Monte Carlo. .

  3. On my 89 I had a similar problem. I had to remove and clean the ground strap cable that ran from starter to the frame. Not sure if your yr has the ground strap.

I agree with Gunslinger...check all cables and clean all connections first..Good luck.

  4. Please do not count the following as fact, just a timeline I have put together from newspaper articles, notes from conversations, sales brochures, etc, in my possession.

The Chevy Monte Carlo went out of production after the 1987 model yr. Thus the change required to use the Caprice chassis. In late 1986 the bankrupt Robert Blake owned South Bend, Indiana company was bought by Mike Kelly. Mike Kelly re-named the company "The New Avanti Motor Corporation" and moved the "NEW" company to Youngstown, OH. He was the man behind the convertible design. In Mid-87 John Cafaro bought a 50% stake in the company. In 1988 Mike Kelly sold out completely to Cafaro. The 1988 25th Anniversary LSC was a longer version of the std Avanti coupe. Maybe as a result of the loss of the MC chassis and the re-engineering required to get the coupe/convertible car to fit the Caprice chassis? I do not what chassis was used on the 1988 LSC. Left over MC chassis? I am not aware of a 1988 convertible or std coupe being produced. In the 1989 model yr sales brochure ads referred to the company as "Avanti Automotive Corporation".

  5. The 89's have the 305 CI engine with 4 barrel carb. They were never fuel injected. I concur with plwindish on the comments of the window motors. I have replaced both the driver and pass side. Have not had troubles with the rear qtr window motors. Have fun..

  6. This would be the first 89 I've seen that is on a Camaro chassis..My 89 is on modified Caprice Chassis. The adds facts might be a bit off. I doubt it has anti-lock brakes but maybe they were added?..Pictures of the engine compartment would tell. Would have been nice to see the engine compartment. Do not know anything about the story behind Al Jardine owning this car. I would not refer to this car as an Avanti II. There is a sticker in the lower pass side of the windshield. This sticker says the car was made in Youngstown, OH. I refer to this car as a Cafaro Avanti.. Cafaro was the owner of the company when the '89's were built (I think my facts are right on Cafaro).

Looking at the pictures, the wheels on the car appear to be original. The taillight and headlight bezels are painted the body color. Correct The door handles, window trim, Avanti badges, windshield frame and wipers are chrome. Correct. The interior looks correct. The steering wheel and door map pockets are very different from mine, but that's Avanti for you. The add makes no comment of the boot cover (for when the top is down, should match the top/interior color). Look like a nice car. If it were closer I'd go have a look.

  7. I converted my 89 convertible to R134a yrs ago. I just changed the connectors on the high and low sides. I had not probs for yrs til my compressor failed. I do not attribute the compressor failure to the use of R134a. The drawback with R134a if you are not aware is that it does not cool the car as well as R12 at low speeds and long idle times.
