  1. Mark...

I don't know if this interests you, but there's a '63 Avanti on Ebay right now that might suit your desires. It's missing the drivetrain and front and rear glass as probably other items, but the seller says it has a good frame which is a big plus. From the photo it looks to have originally been an R2 since it has the supercharged emblems. It also comes with the transport trailer it sits on. I don't know the seller's reserve but it could be a good deal if low enough. The car is located maybe ten miles from me but I haven't gone to look at it.

If you want a project car to customize, this has potential. Ebay Avanti

Thanks, I would be interested in frame and body, but not trailer. emailed him about condition of hog troughts, Ken, Deltaville Va

  2. I'm no expert, but a quick look at a parts manual shows that the short block, exhaust manifolds,

and pan are the same, the heads, intake manifold, and distributor are different (although apparently

the R2 head was available as an option on the R1).

It's the R3/R4 models that differ a lot from the R1/R2. Interestingly, the radiator is used by all.

I don't know whether there are any stamping marks on the engine that tell its type.

And, of course, the paperwork that came with a new R2 would be of interest to a collector, since

it proves the car was originally an R2.

Thanks, Do you know if the VIN reflects R1 R2 status. The 2011 AOAI roster shows this but is that part of the factory stamped plate? I'm considering a 63 that used to have a supercharger according to the present owner.

  3. As they were produced by Studebaker, what specifically is the difference between an R 1 and an R 2, beyond the supercharger? Did the R 2 engine block have a unique number for its supercharger? Cam? Intake/exhaust? Any thing else? What is involved in returning an Avanti that left the factory as an R 2 to unquestionable R 2 status, (not a clone)?

  4. Ken, just a note. Saw on the Studebaker Drivers Club site and forum that Max is in the hospital as of yesterday. Here is the note. He is doing better now based on the comments. I guess it will be a bit before he can get back to you.

    Max Corkins in Lewistown Hospital

Admitted last week with blood sugar of 1762; pretty disoriented. He's stable now with numbers well below 400 and has lost 20 pounds. A few more hours and he wouldn't have made it. His sister saved his life.

    Room 5130

    Lewistown Hospital

    400 Highland Avenue

    Lewistown, Pa. 17044

Thanks, I can wait, I would not start on a car until next winter, Ken

  5. There is a 64R1 a few towns over from me that I looked at last year. The car has sat outside for a bunch of years. I offered $2500 as is and the deal was going well until he felt the car was worth much more. He said it ran, sure sure. I will email him again and find out what the status is. I did take a dozen digital pics of the car; inside, outside and engine bay. I will keep you posted.

    Mark

Mark, thanks, where is it located, you are both North and South of me, near Richmond Va? That sounds like something I may be interested in as poor condition is not a major issue. Was it in Lackland? Ken

I have trouble posting CL listings when I use search tempest but here is a sample of what I found in 5 minutes.

The one I thought was in Maryland is in Newark, Del 1966 @ $6350

    More,

1963 in Saline, Mi $4500, 1978 in Wauconda, Il $4900, 1970 in Columbus, Oh $5500 Just the cheap ones.

Go to www.searchtempest.com and take it for a ride. Just type in cars & trucks, look for Avanti and enjoy.

    Bob

Bob, thanks found several across U.S. Ken, Deltaville, Va

I've been reading Ernie's writeup on his Avanti and didn't realize the extent of his improvements to his car.

I guess it might be worth your time to post what you mean by a basket case. A true basket case Avanti (63-64) will generally need hog troughs and frame replacement of repair. If you can do all the work yourself it will be less expensive than Ernie's but not by much.

My 83 was such a project but I started with a decent (10 Foot) body and interior and minor frame and hog trough issues. It started at $7500 and with all of the guile I could muster to keep costs down, I probably have $15,000 in it currently. It could use paint and interior but which I can do and may someday, but it is currently a driver with a darn stout SBC and 200R4 and 4:10 rear end.

If I add that to my cost plus hog troughs and frame issues, I'd be pretty close to Ernies.

But if you still want to continue to find a basket case Avanti try using Search Tempest to search Craigslist. You will find a $6600 or so basket case in the Maryland area and some others less expensive. When you try it it will ask if you want to use Auto Tempest which will allow you to narrow down the years. This app will search all the craigslist's in the US.

    Good Luck

For the record- I reregistered as Avanti83 after a few difficulties with BobS, my old name. You can see a couple of shots of what my investment has bought if you search under that name.

    Bob

Bob, found a couple of freezers and Ebay list of Avanti, nothing on Craig List at $6600 in Maryland, can you be more specific as to that Craig listing, thanks, Ken, Deltaville Va

  8. Ken...

Take this with a grain of salt...just my opinion and that won't even get you a cup of coffee. If you want to hot rod an Avanti...I believe an Avanti II is a better candidate. They generally cost less to buy than an equivalent Studebaker version...Avanti II's were considered better cars when new but even the newest is old by now and the free market rules that Studebakers are worth more. While the Studebaker engine is a fine engine, the small block Chevy is far, far easier to hot rod and crate engines of any number of power levels are available to drop in if you want. If you want the panache of a different engine than a ubiquitous small block Chevy, have at it.

Avanti II's were all custom cars, more or less, than a production car, so you can change whatever you like as there was no real factory standard anyway. The value won't be materially affected like it might with a Studebaker. If you're concerned about later resale value, a customized Studebaker Avanti will turn many potential buyers away.

LIke I said...take what I said with a grain of salt...it's your wants and desires that are important.

Thanks, already have 500HP 89 Avanti "hot rod" and have no plans to sell in my lifetime. Ken Deltaville Va

This is in reply to both Bob aqnd Ernie - I recognize what you are saying and appreciate and welcome all comments. In fact, several months ago, when I decided to restore an Avanti, posts like yours were very helpful. Since retirement in 1995, have restored 3 ea 63 GT's, 1 54 Commander hardtop, 2 ea 56 Golden Hawks and 1 57 Gh, and one 71 off brand car (Nova) and am aware of cost. The 56's were the most expensive because of the uniqe parts. So far I have broken even on the sale of three of cars, I sold them, reluctantly, because of space limitations, otherwse I would still have them. I do most of the work myself, except for machine work (engine, tranny, rear end, etc, ) and have help from folks who are more interested in getting Studebakers back on the road than in making money, one of them used to race Studebakers. I said earlier in a post that I am new to Avanti but I am new not to Studebaker restoration. I have always had a fondness of Studebakers as I learned to drive on a 51 land cruuiser and they serve as a winter project to keep me from having to watch "Dr. Phil" and "Ophra" (sp) and other equally useless activities. So thanks again for your input and, in fact, I could probably would respond the same way about cost, but I view it a little differently because I do most of the work and am thereby able to contain cost to something close to what the car might bring. Ken, Deltavile, Va

  10. Last Fall I set out to find either a 63 or 64 , or an 87 or newer to restore and perhaps to hot rod. Ended up with an 89 that needed nothing. Would still like to find a basket case 63 or 64 as a winter project. Must be automatic and within a reasonable distance of Richmond Va. Ken, Deltaville, Va

  11. If anyone has a picture(s) of how a boot is secured to an 89 convertible, I would apprecate seeing it. I'm going t have a boot made and need to know how it is supposd to the fastened to the car. There two snaps shaps on each side of the interior. I would expect snaps to be on the curved exterior trim at the top of the rear trunk area but instead that trim piece is secured with counter sink set screws. Ken, Deltaville, Va

  12. I need the outer window seal for an 89 Avanti. SI has them thru 1983, but not 89. Is the 89 door that different from the 83? Also who might have them, if not SI, and has anyone substituted "cat wiskers", for the rubber seal that is supposed to the used? Ken, Deltaville, Va. >Added Monday: Thanks for the help, I'm new to Avanti.

    >NEW INFORMATION: I also need a boot for the convertible top which I exect to have made at a top shop. If anyone has picutres of how the boot is snapped down, I would appreciate seeing them. There are only two snaps on each side of the interior and that does not appear to be adequate. I would expect to see snaps on the curved exterior trim piece at the top of the rear trunk area, but instead that trim piece is secured with counter sink set screws.

  13. looking for courtesy light switch, and hinge for the console in between the front seats, for 89 model. Who has this kind of stuff, and what manuals would be good to have for this model. i'm new to avanti ? Ken

added information: Found hinge, when i looked for manual (s) I was overwhelmed by the number of manuls available, but nothing specific to 89 model. I'm used to (and like) the Studebaker type factory reprint manuals, "shop," "body" and "chassis". What i need is something specific to the Monte Carlo stuff on the avanti to include parts ID and repair specifications. Any recommendation?

  14. Thanks for alot of good informaiton and pics about the 71. I think i'll go with crate engine and transmisison. Since 1995 I've had 7 studebaker engines overhauled, the last one (packard 352) costing triple a crate engine. I still have 5 of those cars and am familiar with Studebaker vendors, but know little or nothing about Avanti dealers, just joined Avanti owners. If you think of any more please feel free to email to the forum or directly at renda1007@yahoo.com. Ken, Deltaville, Va

  15. I am contemplating restoring a 71 Avanti II. After several years of Studebaker restoration, I am familiar with what parts to get and where to get them but have several questions about the 1971 Avanti II that is under consideration, mainly:

    1. Are there shop, body, and chassis manuals, if so who has them and are they as complete as the studebaker manuals?

    2. SI has some parts, but not many Avanti II parts, who are the principle suppliers?

    3. On the 71 is the battery properly mounted in the trunk, if so should it be contained?

    4. Does the 71 have ignition suppression shielding, if so what does it look like, as it was not apparent on the 71 (and the radio did not work)?

    5. What about engine, transmission parts, is there a separate GM book for that, and does it make more sense to replace with crate motor, transmission vs. overhaul?

    6. The AC compressor is missing, what type compressor is used and who might have it and what ever brackets may be used?

Finally does anyone have pictures of the engine compartment of a 71 that they could email (renda1007@yahoo.com). I am familiar with 63-64 motor compartment and this 71 looks like it is missing some parts and/ or has some "jack-leg" changes.

Any help would be appreciated Ken, Deltaville Va

  16. Studebaker is not eactly a household word. I went to a recent car show consisting of about 100 cars and they did not know Studebaker and wanted to put me in "foreign car" category. A couple of weeks earlier at a 200 car show a 63 Avant won top award. I understand the concern for modified cars, but my pet peeve is when a "Kit" competes with a car decades old and when I broght this up at the show, the kit owner told me that state police wanted it registered as the old car it pretends to be rather than as the Camaro VIN used as its platform and that seems to be the national trend.

  17. Thanks, again, I am undecided except that if its a 63 or 64 it will be resored back to original, later model will have some liberty taken on design and motor. Curently leaning is to 80's model. Have contacts in Richnond, Hampton Roads and Potomac chapters, thanks again, ken..

I replied to your post on the Studebaker forum and I don't know for sure what you've decided...whether a Stude framed Avanti or the later Chevy framed models. A lot depends on what you feel is best for you. You're always welcome to ask questions here or discuss anything you like. We all love Avanti's...warts and all.

My closest friend lives in Newport News...not that far from you, but he's a Vette guy. There's also an active Studebaker Drivers Club chapter in that area...you can also rely on them for assistance. The SDC website should give you contact information.

When you choose an Avanti to buy and if it requires reconstruction, I can recommend a shop here in Maryland that did my car, as well as a speed shop for mechanical modifications and a fantastic upholstery shop. You can send me an email or a personal message and we can chat offline about that if you want. There's probably some good shops in your area as well...that's where the local SDC chapter can be of real help. It's a tough economy and many shops may be very willing to tackle such a job, but it's still better to find the right shop, not just any shop willing to do it. When my car was being done, I had one basic requirement...I only want to do it once...I didn't want to have to redo something because I wanted to cheap out or didn't think it through. As it is, I didn't do a few things that should have been done and I regret it, though none are big things, but it's the little things that can get you and be irritating.

    Also...welcome to the AOAI!

  18. I have restored (frame off) 7 Studebakers since 1995 retirement but am considering a later model Avanti as the next project. Posted this on Studebaker forum and got their thoughts on which way to go. Joined AOAI Friday and would like to hear from you folks, realizing some may have already seen the Studebaker forum exchange. It was posted 10-15 under "Avanti Restoratin". If you have not seen it would appreciate your thoughts. Ken Deltaville, Va
