  1. I'm not a pilot, but I did have a Jaguar as my daily driver, up until a few months ago.

Not exactly a sports car, but Jaguar called it a "Sport Wagon" (05 X-Type wagon). That was actually a rarer car than my Avanti. Only 1600 of them in the US total for the 4 years that they made them. That was a big part of what drew me to buy it. I only saw one other Jag Wag on the road in the 2 years that I owned it.

  2. I ended up buying a group 34N MAAX battery from Wal-Mart. It is the same depth, so the original top retainer bracket fits over it. It is about an inch longer and an inch taller. The extra height might have been a problem, with the cables reaching over the battery, but the polarity is reversed so I was able to rotate the battery, putting the terminals on the near side. It was not easy to slip it into the tray, but once in, it looks fine. I just need to make sure that the engine doesn't rock enough for the AC pulley to hit the corner of the battery. The original group 42 was only 500 CCA. The 34N is 800 CCA. It has a 3 year free replacement warranty, which will come in handy if I have trouble figuring out why this car kills batteries every 9 months or so.

  3. My 84 came with an almost new Sears group 42 size battery. When that went dead a few months later, Sears was the only place around that had a group 42, so I bought another Sears silver battery. That one died quickly, and was replaced for free. Now I'm into the pro-rated part of the warranty, and this one won't hold a charge. Sears no longer carries group 42 batteries. Any recommendations for a modern size group that fits the 84?

    Thanks,

    Paul

    BTW,

I don't know why this car keeps killing batteries. I've checked a few times for current draw when the car is off, but it is always very low (a few mA). I changed the alternator because the bearing was going out, but both old and new alternators put out around 14.5V. I keep a trickle charger on it when I don't drive it often.

  4. For my 63 Avanti resto-mod project I am leaving the factory AM radio in the dash but installing a Custom Audio "Secret Audio SST" unit that can be hidden under a seat, in the trunk or glove box. I has a small flip down LED screen that can be mounted under dash on lip and uses an RF remote than doesn't require a line of sight (like an IR unit) to control the receiver. It accepts a USB data stick or iPod for digital music. I'm installing Polk Audio 6-1/2" speakers in the kick panels and 6 x 9 oval speakers in the rear deck.

Here's web link to the Secret Audio SST unit ... My link

I used the Custom Audio USA630 in my 84. Fit without any dash modifications. Plays very loud with no distortion, and the tuner is strong. Also has jacks for USB thumb drive and MP3 player.

  5. Thanks Bob,

I'd appreciate that contact information for the outside mirrors.

(for inside, I bought a reproduction intended for an 80's Monte Carlo. Not exact, but close enough for now. I suppose nobody but me will know the difference, and I'm not even sure that the broken one is the original one anyway)

  6. The inside mirror on my 84 coupe fell off of the windshield and shattered on the shifter. I looked in the Stude Intl catalog. The Avanti mirror that they have is supposed to fit 63-85, but it is stainless steel, and it says to mount it on your existing post. I don't know if mine is original, but mine is black plastic with a non-removable stem. Is the original mirror black plastic or SS? Anyone know where to get one that looks like the original?

I'd also like to replace the outside mirrors with something close to original, if anone has ideas. Mine vibrate a lot, and the passenger one goes out of adjustment every time I close the door or hit a big bump.

    Thanks,

    Paul

  7. I wanted an Avanti long before I bought my 73 Javelin in the mid 70's, but was not able to own one until recently.

I am glad that AMC ran out of money and didn't make the 73 look like any of the concepts in the OPs link.

In particular, the fronts on the concept models look terrible. The actual 73's look great IMO.

  8. When I got my 84 Avanti, the driver's seat bottom was sagging. I took the seat out and found that the bottom was supported by elastic straps, which had streched-out. I ended up getting some 3' long zip-ties and wraping a couple of them around each elastic strap. I snugged the zip-ties up as tight as I could, and it worked great. No more sagging seat bottom... Worth a try if you have the same problem.

  9. I got the radio to power-up in the car now. The problem was a bad ground connection.

Unfortunately, just as it was on my bench, there is very little volume. Cranked full blast it isn't loud enough to be heard over engine/wind noise.

I'm still wondering if there is a seperate power amplifier somewhere.

  10. The Blaupunkt radio in my 84 Avanti was dead when I bought the car. I pulled it out and hooked it up, and it seems to work except that the volume is VERY low. I thought it would be a good idea to replace the tape player belts while I had it out. With the tape transport out, everything else is visible. No sign of any power transistors or ICs. Based on that, along with the low volume, I'm assuming that this is a 2 piece stereo with a separate power amp. True? Where is the power amp located? I'd like to bench test the whole system before putting it back in the car.

Then I need to igure out why there is no 12v getting to the head unit...

One other question. I pulled the coin cup from the top of the dash in order to get the radio out. Under the cup is a circuit board with a few IC's and several other components. What is the function of this circuit card?

    Thanks,

    Paul
