All - as a post script here's what I ended up doing. Wanted to avoid disturbing the window/gasket AND wanted to preserve the plastic emblem, so.......1) Marked where the posts likely were on the old chrome bezel using the new ones from Stude Int'l. 2) gently drilled those spots until they broke from the body of the old bezel. 3) as old bezel became lose removed the old Plastic 'S' insignia intact, removed the old bezel, pushed the old studs into the holes in the body ( they fell inside the interior panels ). Will use the dreaded silicone to form the watertight seal I need ( the new bezel's from SI have a vinyl barrel around the studs that will help hold in place while sealant cures ) to hold this in place. Thanks for all the input - this ended up being quite painless and removes concours judges sole point of criticism on the body.

"You then need to get the 3 new retainers from a hardware or auto parts store -- the ones you can pop in from the outside to hold the new plastic and chrome piece."
abasileThis is intriguing as I don't need to salvage any part of the the current sail panel plastic logo/metal bezel.
What retainers are we talking here that would fit the posts and hold with a 'push' application from the outside?
Thanks
Steve

Thanks all - guess this goes under the adage - "there are no 5 minute jobs' - and since the last several concours judges have mentioned that tho' looking original the chrome and plastic badges are looking a little the worse for the years of wear'......so will swap them out next weekend and report back

Folks
Finally replacing the side emblems on R-2552. Has anyone done this recently - any step by step on which panels to pull and how?
Looking like half the inner panels under the side windows need to come out for access. Thanks for any help.

Folks - am now getting around to addressing the inoperable Boost/Vacuum/Presure gauge on the R-3. Any experience on most likely faults? As always many thanks - Steve

Folks - I have been able to secure the replacement center console cover ( replaces the original which is now sporting Andy Granitelli's autograph and get's put away ) but have NOT found a source for the red vinyl interior material for a '63 - Stude Int'l and Nostalgic don't carry it. Does anyone know where I can score a square yard of the vinyl? Thanks as always - Steve
-
Thanks J - I completely forgot about those folks - needed replacement tail light assemblies when my re-chromer lost mine and used them.

Folks - had the good luck to get my current center console cover autographed by Andy Granitelli at the Santa Barbara Concours yesterday - now I need a replacement as I
plan to store this one and install it only for shows. Anyone know where I can get just the cover with the release button mechanism ( I'll re-cover whatever I can score to
match the car's current red interior color). Thanks Steve

The bra for me is to basically get me back and forth from regional shows that are never more than 100 miles or so away - in that use I'm worrying less about bra rub and more about stone(s) decimating the new paint job up front. Will report back once the new bra arrives about fit and how it behaves - have the car showing in the Santa Barbara Concours this year in late october so will be road testing the new bra then. SV

Excellent! Thanks Gunslinger - they're in Long beach and i'm in LA so this might be easy......Steve

Folks - am about to start having 63R 2552 judged at a few concours within driving distance and want some protection for the trips. Is anyone making a front bra for the '63? Otherwise am considering using Eastwood's white chafe tape ( http://www.eastwood.com/final-assembly-chafe-tape.html - same type used on leading edges for new cars in transit on trucks/trains ) - has anyone had an experience with that stuff? Thanks Steve

Jon recommended Williamson's Instruments in Chester AR - contacted them and got a reply immediately - very fair price for a rebuild. Waiting on the rebuilt unit to return. Thanks all
-
Thanks Gunslinger as always - e mailed Jon and waiting for a reply - Nostalgic good idea too. Nothing on Hemming's I can find - hope Jon can
rebuild the unit. Want to stay absolutely as original as I can. Steve

Latest on the Avanti's speedometer failure is - replaced the cable and pinion gear - after 1/2 mile speedometer buzzed, pinned at 160 mph and the needle came off. So - I'm now in the market for a replacement unit or a rebuild shop for the failed speedometer unit - anyone have a suggestion on where to go? Stude Int'l has none.
Thanks Steve

Folks - Speedo/Odo quit on the 63 Avanti w/automatic the other day. Before I begin ripping it apart thought I'd seek and wise advice on what is more likely
to have failed first. Thanks Steve

Folks - speedo and odo quit on the 63 Avanti the other day. Thought before I begin ripping everything out I'd check for any wise council on what to examine first for highest failure probability. Auto transmission. Thanks for any insights - Steve

Thanks Bob - this is exactly what i needed. Yes, looks like the holes were glassed over at some point so your photo will get me back
into the stock position. Steve

Folks - am re-installing the foot pump for the window washer. Though originally delivered with the pump in place I am not seeing any prior holes around the hi/lo beam dimmer switch. Can anyone advise the exact location the foot pump should occupy? A photo would be great. Thanks Steve

Am now ready to replace all the brake pads - first time since I've owned #2552 - not quite ready to spring for the Turner conversion yet so am looking for any advice on what front/rear pads to use to wring maximum performance from the stock set up. Thanks

Post script - Jon Meyer's does indeed have some blanks tags - will get from him and then try to match stamping......
-
John Poulos was kind enough to point out that what I am looking for is the BODY NO. TAG not a VIN tag. So - has anyone had any luck getting this tag remanufactured? Thanks
-
Anyone know where I can get a new stamped VIN tag for under the hood. Have seen many an Avanti with the VIN stamped into a small metal plate riveted onto the passenger side top wheel well in the engine bay. Holes are present but no VIN tag on mine - would like to get an authentic looking one made. Thanks

For those of you in Southern California or adjacent - would like to encourage any/all Avanti owners
to attend and enter your cars in the San Marino Motor Classic June 12, 2016. We had a Studebaker
class last year with 20 cars and we'd like another full Stude class this year with a strong compliment of
Avanti's ( I'll be attending with #2552 ). Its a great show
in a lovely park setting with a wide range of collector cars from brass thru 80's exotics.
Link to the entry form is below

Thanks all - look forward to seeing you on the 12th
