  1. I have a friend who is interested in a '63 R2 for sale in Enid, OK. Anybody near there who would give the car a good checking out for her? She had owned a '63 R1 Avanti new and wants another one. Thanks. BTW, she has a husband who is a car guy too.

    Bill,

I'm about an 1-1/2 from there and can't get up that way soon but perhaps if you haven't already posted on the SDC Forum you might do so as there are some members closer to Enid than me.

  2. My R1 engine was bored 0.060" over (299 cu in), has hypereutectic pistons, R3 SS valves with ported heads, ported and polished aluminum R3 intake, polished R3 exhaust header, 276 deg cam and will be fitted with an edelbrock AFB, Paxton Supercharge with High output impeller, and a Mopar HEI ignition. Basically an R2+ configuration. My rear end was rebuilt with 3.73 ratio and Auburn gear posi-trac. The transmission is a Tremec TKO 600 with a final OD gear ratio of 0.63.

I'm curious as to what others running a 5 speed trans on a R2~R3 clone engine might be getting for mileage estimates.

  3. For my 63 Avanti resto-mod project I am leaving the factory AM radio in the dash but installing a Custom Audio "Secret Audio SST" unit that can be hidden under a seat, in the trunk or glove box. I has a small flip down LED screen that can be mounted under dash on lip and uses an RF remote than doesn't require a line of sight (like an IR unit) to control the receiver. It accepts a USB data stick or iPod for digital music. I'm installing Polk Audio 6-1/2" speakers in the kick panels and 6 x 9 oval speakers in the rear deck.

Here's web link to the Secret Audio SST unit ... My link

  4. I think it would be fair to say Jack doesn't think "Exhaust Headers" will improve the performance of a

stock or R1 - R3 Studebaker V8. I bought R3 headers for my Avanti, but probably wouldn't now because

of the current prices. I think, and I know Jack would agree, that head work would be a much better use

of money if you are investing in more performance from your Stude. BTW, there may be an improved

aluminum intake manifold available in the not to distant future. I'm waiting on mine now and will

report on any improvement I obtain.

I'm expecting a total improvement of about 100 hp over my previous factory R1 specs. The R3 exhaust headers will not do much on a stock R1 engine but combined with other improvements significant improvement is possible.

  5. You might be able to find a set of R3 headers for your avanti. Here's a photo of the R3 headers on my engine that was build by Michael Myer. I'm not sure if the various Studebaker vendors have some of in stock or not and they may be hard to find. They enhance performance over the standard R1 headers.

  6. How the dickens do I change my profile picture? I'm trying to change/delete my black '77 and add my turquoise '63. The '63 photo I'm using is 150x113 pixels and 20kb -- I believe that meets the guidelines. While that photo appears to show on my change profile page, it is not what "attaches" to my posts. Help!, please!

I've tried changing mine as well but even after uploading new picture with proper specifications the old profile picture remains the same ....

  7. Tire Size: P205/70R15 AT Twin Traction Std 3.34

For the above Tire size the diameter is approximately 26.3", The final drive ratio in 3rd gear for the Powershift (Drive) is 1.0 and for the 3.34 ratio rear end I calculate the following RPM's

    2561 RPM at 60 MPH

    2988 RPM at 70 MPH

  8. This is all stock: 1964 Avanti R1, AT. Tires are slightly bigger, don't know if that makes any difference. Same motor, rear-end etc.

My tach is reading around 2600,2700RPM's @ 60MPH

Bruce, I hope everything works out well for you and that you will have it ready for the meet.

    Steve

Bruce, I have an Excel spreadsheet that will calculate the RPM with the following input:

Tire Size (example: 215/70/15); transmission type; rear axle ratio

If you would like me to tell you the actual RPM for 60 MPH to verify your tachometer reading just send me the input data above.

  9. Just a quick update, I'll have more pictures towards the end of April when I go to Ohio to the Myer's Tech Meet. Michael's goal is for me to be able to start the engine when I'm there for the tech meet. :) This has been a 2 year project so far and I'm getting anxious now that we are on the home stretch.

  12. These measurements are for the opening and not the ash receiver. 2 1/2 by 1 7/8 and 4 inches deep. 3/8" from bottom of cover to opening when closed.

Thanks Regnalbob .... I haven't heard back from Rostra yet but found the dimensions of the Rostra 250-3592 Switch by google searching and an Amazon site selling it listed the dimensions as 2"(Width)x 1-1/2"(Height)x 3/8"(Depth. This will fit nicely in the opening mounted in a plate or perhaps even inside the ashtray bucket with a little engineering.

In addition I found a web post from someone who installed the exact same unit and switch inside a console ashtray in an Austin Healey. This web link has detail instruction and pictures on all the throttle linkage and other aspects of installing a cruise control.

    My link

I am going to have Mike Meyer do this on my Avanti has I will never personally use an ash tray for its intended purpose nor once my car is restored while anyone be allowed to smoke in or around it.

I will have him take pictures of the install so we can document it for others who may be interested in trying this.

  13. These measurements are for the opening and not the ash receiver. 2 1/2 by 1 7/8 and 4 inches deep. 3/8" from bottom of cover to opening when closed.

Thanks very much ... now I will contact the cruise control manufacturer and get the dimensions of the 2 button control unit.

  14. Can someone out there with a 63 Avanti measure the opening that the ash tray fits into under the flip up cover on the console in front of the console storage. This is the ash tray next to the cigar lighter.

I need length x width x depth of ash tray bucket that pulls out and also the approx. depth from bottom of cover when closed to top of ash tray. I am not a smoker and I am considering removing the ash tray (leaving the cigar lighter) and using that spot to install the small two button control for an electronic speed control. Here's a pic of the type of speed control button unit I am thinking about.

Another possibility might be replacing the turn signal lever, but I have no idea what the original turn signal mounts to inside the column, threaded, pinned, etc. and what its dimensions are. My avanti is 1000 miles away under restoration right now so any input from you guys would be helpful.

  15. What is the process to post a photo on this forum?

Go to a website like Photobucket or Flickr, I use Photobucket and create a free online account. Upload your pictures to the photobucket website after logging in. Go to the picture you would like to post of the forum and copy the IMG code. Go back to your Forum and create a forum posting and cut n paste the IMG code into your forum post.

Here's an example the IMG code has the following before and after the web address ['IMG]web address['/IMG]

Here's a picture using a IMG code from my photobucket website ...

  16. I'm glad the SDC and the AOAI has plenty of room for those who want to maintain originallity and for those of us (myself included) who love taking an original and don't mind doing a resto-mod on it because we want a car with more performance, safety and comfort than it had orignally. :)

  17. okc63avanti - stayed pretty stock w/my color which is the original Avanti Red ( tho' it looks more primary red in the photo ). Jon Myers worked on my car in the mid-late 90's for the prior owner and basically did the same set up on mine you're getting - in those days I think he called it an R-2 & 7/8ths set up. Have been told our set up is a much better driving experience than a pure R-3. Anyway - am about at the end of my resto now so will be able to run this sucker some and enjoy it. Good luck on yours - Myer's are the folks to have involved for a first rate job in my book.

Mike is done with engine, chassis (powder coated), suspension, 4 wheel disc brakes and we coverted the rear end to flanged alloy axles, Auburn gear posi-trac and a 3:73 ration to go with the 5 speed. The body is painted and will soon be reunited with the chassis and then we will finish interior redo. Mike expects to be done sometime in 1st quarter of 2011. I can't with to get her back and start making shows with it. Good luck on yours as well.

  18. the assemblies were $135/each.....

    Red,

I saw in your post that your Avanti is originally an R1 but now a Jon Myer R3 update. My 63 Avanti R2386 is currently at Myer Studebaker and is receiving a full and total restoration/modification from Mike Myer. It was originally a white with orange interior R1, auto, AC car but has received a competion engine rebuild to what Mike calls a R2-1/2. Block was bored 0.060" over (299 cu in), heads were hand ported and received R3 SS valves, R3 cam, R3 aluminum intake and R3 exhaust headers. The engine will keep R2 style carb bonnet (I don't like the box) and be fitted with edelbrock AFB and Mopar Electronic Ignition. The trans is being converted to Tremec 5 speed and the car will keep its factory AC with exception of a new Sanden compressor.

I would like to hear more about your car and one of the things I've noticed about your pictures is the similarity in paint color between your avanti and mine. Because I am an alumnus of the University of Alabama (Crimson Tide) I chose to have my car painted a non-factory color. It has been painted Chrysler (Dodge) Inferno Red Crystal Pearlcoat.

Here's my photobucket slide show of its progress ... My link

  19. I got a quote for a 3EE Willard battery from Antique Battery Co. It will hit your wallet hard $255 for the battery plus another $41 shipping charge. Another Avanti owner with R3 sent me these pics of his engine bay using a Group 51 battery which is a smaller size used in late 80's to early 90's Honda Civic. The are available in stock or can be ordered at your FLAPS.

Group 51 battery dimensions are 9-3/8" long X 5-1/16" width X 8-3/4" height. I have found this size battery available as a maintence free battery with 625 cranking amps and 500 CCA and 6~8 years prorated warrenty (1st 3 yrs - replacement) for under $95.
