  1. I got back home last night from the 2011 AOAI meet at Gettysburg. Congratulations to Keystone & AOAI for having a good meet. Having over 75 Avanti's on the field was quite an impressive site. My first meet was very enjoyable. Traveling from Chicago to Gettysburg and back with two fellow Chicagoland members driving an '02 Avanti and my '76 was fantastic. The looks, questions, comments and conversations from travelers at rest stops was priceless. My 3 1/2 month project getting the engine rebuilt and trans swapped helped make the '76 a reliable ride. The only miscue for the car was the ac crapping out in Ohio. Two cans of 134 in Gettysburg kept me cool for the trip home. The '76 ranged from 21.2 to 22.8 mpg on the road to and from Gettysburg, making the decision to swap in the 200R4 a good one. It was truly a great time seeing fellow club members, meeting many fine new friends while talking about all things Avanti. I'm already looking forward to the 2012 Meet in South Bend, a much easier 90 miles distance than the 700 to Gettysburg.

What are the dates for the 2012 meet in South Bend? Is it the same as the SDC meet in South bend?

  2. The Studebaker shop manual specifies 75-83 foot-pounds of torque. I would think this would be the same for an '83 since it uses the same hub and rotors. Whether the wire wheels would require a different torque I have no idea.

Thanks for asking about my car. I have doubts it will be ready in time for Gettysburg...the new quarter panel is on and gel-coated as of Tuesday and ready for priming and the new door was being stripped for gel-coating and priming. The new door pillar is installed as well and the door test fit. It seems to hang better than the damaged door did.

The clear coat will need to be stripped before painting is done and blended plus re-clear coating the whole car. That all means the window trim and bumpers have to come off. I just don't see all that being done in less than two weeks. Who knows how much time it will take to install and align the window which is a big pain with Avanti's. Even if it is done, I would need a day or so to prep and detail the car.

As much as I'd like to have the car ready for Gettysburg, it's more important that it be done correctly. I'll be there with the '02 but I was planning on having both there. Such is life.

Thanks Bruce...I did some research on the "Dayton" wire wheel and it said if your lug nut is 1/2" use 75 foot pounds. So thats what I used.

Is the AOAI meet going to be in South Bend on July 29th thru Aug.4th 2012? That's when SDC is having their meet.

  3. Can anyone provide documentation as to the factory issue battery manufacturer. Common answers are Willard, however, the '63 Avanti Accessories brochure shows Globe.

Hi Jim, My 55 that Charlie Rasuchnot serviced had brochures showing the Willard battery

I'm not sure what the later models had.

Nice seeing you at the SDC meet.

  4. Steve,

Which ones are they, the Daytons or Borannis? If they are the Borannis, check the condition of the adaptors and hubs, the splines are very fine and it is not unusual for the splines to rust away because many people won't grease the splines in an effort to keep the wheels clean. Another thing about the Borannis, they used the same wheel for several different cars, changing the adaptors to not only change bolt pattern but offset (backspacing) as well. That is assuming they are knockoff mounting. If they are bolt up, make certain that they are Daytons and not some other brand with slotted bolt holes. There was a lot of garbage being made but Dayton and Boranni did consistantly make good product.

Thanks Ken...they are Daytons. I have the original Dayton wire wheel spare WW tire and four Dayton wire wheels on WW tires.

They also say not to use a impact wrench on the wheels. Is this true?

  5. June 4th I will be purchasing one of John Seatons 1983 Avanti from a member of my club.

I plan on driving it to the SDC meet in Springfield.

I was wondering where I could get in contact with him. Bruce, do you have any idea?

  6. In about a month or so I will be selling 4 Bridgestone Insignia SL P205/75R15 tires with very low miles on them. They are mounted on Crager S/S wheels.

They are off a 1983 Avanti previously owned by John Seaton.

I want $1,000 for the four tires and wheels.

I will include photo in e-mail.

Send me a e-mail if interested

  7. For the above Tire size the diameter is approximately 26.3", The final drive ratio in 3rd gear for the Powershift (Drive) is 1.0 and for the 3.34 ratio rear end I calculate the following RPM's

    2561 RPM at 60 MPH

    2988 RPM at 70 MPH

Thanks for your input, Bruce and okc63avanti :)

  8. Bruce, I have an Excel spreadsheet that will calculate the RPM with the following input:

Tire Size (example: 215/70/15); transmission type; rear axle ratio

If you would like me to tell you the actual RPM for 60 MPH to verify your tachometer reading just send me the input data above.

Tire Size: P205/70R15 AT Twin Traction Std 3.34

  9. This is all stock: 1964 Avanti R1, AT. Tires are slightly bigger, don't know if that makes any difference. Same motor, rear-end etc.

My tach is reading around 2600,2700RPM's @ 60MPH

Bruce, I hope everything works out well for you and that you will have it ready for the meet.

  10. The cutoff for two different air vent grates is Avanti R4892, like so many other changes instituted. The earlier grate is simply a metal screen...you can probably find something at a hardware store that you can cut and use. The later plastic grate can likely be picked up from Nostalgic Motors or other vendors. They'll probably have pre-cut screening for the earlier type as well. It sounds like you have the later design...either from the factory or someone has updated it at some point.

Sunvisors? If someone was reproducing them they could pretty much make a mint as so many cars need them replaced. You can check the regular vendors to see if they might have any good used in stock. Outside of that you'll have to find someone who is parting a car out. Sunvisors are probably among the first trim parts asked for. Depending on how bad yours are, they might be restored by some upholstery specialists with the proper equipment and training.

I did see just a screen in the tech manual. So I should not have a grate, because mine is a R2585. just the screen

Also, my upholstery guy is going to work with those sunvisors.

Thanks Bruce, you are a true friend

    Welcome Ron

Matched door barrel and keys are available through Avanti parts.

You may need to get a new ignition barrel and have it keyed alike for the perfect set.

  12. If reference to the tach. My 63 would work when it felt like it. Another words it worked and it didn't.

I purchased one from Bob Ziff from Avanti parts. I paid $58.50 and $5.00 shipping.

The part # is 800008, picture of it in Stude Intl Cat.

You could take it out and blow some liquid air on it, but that didn't work for me.

    Also, Welcome to the site.

  13. Found the engine number: It is either RI762 or R1762. Located drivers side front left of valley pan cover. If I knew where to look it up I would. Help ! Thanks. John

    It's a R1762, which means it's a R1

Did that attachment I sent help you at all?

  14. I'm starting to put my interior back together and sorting thru my stuff, <_< i've seem to misplace my rear access panel. Color is fawn.

IF I don't find it, does someone know where to purchase one?

I'll keep looking in the mean time.

    Thanks

    SR

NEVER MIND I FOUND IT

  16. Upon further investigation I do believe this is an R2. The car is non air. The car has a boost vacuum gauge in dash. The Alternator bracket has the supports for the supercharger. The front pulley is a 3 groove. It has a dual point distributor. The ultimate answer lies with the block stamping. Thanks.

Yes the R2 does not have a/c. It has 3 groove pulley and it has a three hole bracket right along side the alternator to hold the S/C. The R1 and R2 both have a vacuum gauge. I believe they both have a dual point distributor, but not sure.

  17. I replaced the padded dash cover(fawn)on my 63. Part #1350520X1 I got it from Bob Ziff from Avanti Parts in PA. I'm very pleased with it. You do have to remove the dash to replace.

  18. That car was on e-bay. The photos of the motor indicate it is a R1...there is no S/C.

Maybe it was converted from a R2. Also the brakes have been upgraded to a dual master cyclinder. The wheels should be white and the steering wheel is not stock. There is a "supercharger" emblem on the lower fender which is incorrect. Did you get this car in Van Nuys CA?

  19. I am resurfacing my instrument panel and re-installing the guages in my '78 RQB 2698. Does the ammeter have a ground wire? I took a picture before I took everything apart and it had a ground wire. Put it back and now no electrical. Also, the rubber grommets - do they go between the wire and the nut?

    Thanks for any help.

I can give you the wiring schmetic for the 63-64. Don't know if it's the same.

Just give me your e-mail address.
