  1. I think it would be fair to say Jack doesn't think "Exhaust Headers" will improve the performance of a

stock or R1 - R3 Studebaker V8. I bought R3 headers for my Avanti, but probably wouldn't now because

of the current prices. I think, and I know Jack would agree, that head work would be a much better use

of money if you are investing in more performance from your Stude. BTW, there may be an improved

aluminum intake manifold available in the not to distant future. I'm waiting on mine now and will

report on any improvement I obtain.

  2. Here's the "after" photos...after the bodywork was completed we discovered the power brake booster was bad. I took the car to the speed shop that installed the engine and transmission and they installed a modern, aftermarket brake booster and Wilwood master cylinder. The brakes work better than ever and have the pedal feel of a modern car...very pleasing to say the least. While the speed shop had the car I had them install an electric fan and eliminate the standard fan and radiator shroud.

The manager of the body shop said he was sorry to see the car go...he liked showing it off to potential customers looking for restoration work.

Here's photos of the completed car at a car show over the weekend...

Looks very nice, is the pin stripe new? Congratulations on getting your car back with time to drive it. :D

  3. Tried to post this to the calendar, no response, anyone responsible for calendar events?

If you happen to be in NW Washington state this weekend, this is a not to miss event.

Bellingham WA. Food Fun Studebakers Prizes and Music. Plus the first production Avanti.

    Starts 10 AM, for more information call 360 738 0103 or 360 220 2299.

  4. My '70 was damaged recently and requires a new front quarter panel and drivers door. The shop obtained a NOS panel and excellent used door from Nostalgic and started cutting off the damaged panel and revmoved the door. The inside of the body once it's sawed off isn't exactly a thing of beauty!

Hopefully you have some more recent pictures, I remember seeing an older photo with some optional fender ornaments, not a missing fender. Wish you the best with your repairs, and a speedy return to the road.

  5. :) After 18 years of Land Speed racing at Muroc Dry Lake (Edwards, AFB), El Mirage Dry Lake & Bonneville this year racing at Bonneville's Speed Week was the last race for my Avanti. Public Poll?

(If checked, votes will be made public. This cannot be changed once a vote has been made!)

For this last race we had custom T-Shirts made to sell to our Racing friends I had 65 custom T-Shirts made and only have 13 T-Shirts left to sell, we have 5 each mediums; 5 each Large; 3 ea XL, they cost $20 plus shipping. Contact me at "avantikid@earthlink.net" thanks Dave Bloomberg

Hi Dave, couldn't figure out the poll, but would like a "L" T-shirt. Please let me know how to pay you. Thanks

  6. Thanks! I like the Idea(!) of a 5-speed. Where can I get details (e.g. parts, part nos., installation instructions, etc.)?

Billy Bob, it's time to learn about the search feature over on the SDC Forum. I think the Mustang T5 is the most popular choice,

but AFAIK the GM T5 works just as well. You'll need an adaptor, new clutch disc, re-worked driveline, throw-out bearing, about

$1K mad money, if you do it yourself, $1K being the parts cost. It's a very well reviewed swap.

  7. Myer Studebaker is out of stock of the high output impeller for rebuilding the Paxton SN60 supercharger. I think they were getting them from John Erb and they said he has quit making them or is out of stock as well. Does anyone know of a source for these?

    Nimesh Solanki (404) 317 - 8689

  8. Billy Bob, If you are thinking about a change, why not a five speed? AFAIK the hill-holder has no connection to the

transmission at all, and would have no effect on shifting or wear on the transmission synchromesh rings, only clutch

and bumper wear. Also, anything you change or remove can always be stored away in a box.

  9. I have a 64R2 and have a question for you. The 64 R1 you are buying, is that car in Maryland? I saw one for sale and when I called, I was told the car was already sold.

    thanks, mark

Hi Mark, the car I just bought is in SW Washington State, is your R2 an automatic?

  10. PA

My 74 ST-10 4-speed is up on the lift receiving some frame work. If all else fails, I can probably pull the 1-3 and 2-4 levers and photo them along side a ruler

Thanks again Bob, pictures would be great, numbers would still be appreciated if you find any.

Here is the Hurst sheet on the T-10 vs Super T-10. I assume yours is a T-10. The only difference from 74 0n looks like the reverse linkage. http://hurst-shifter...I4&cktime=96655

Why not contact Hurst as they should have the parts for their shifters

    Hi Bob,

Thanks for the link, that was very helpful. Hurst no longer shows those part numbers,

or the application, no listing for any year Avanti. Tried their website and tried

calling customer service, also the local FLAPS, NO luck. Bought some 3/8" rod and a

die. Will post some pictures if I can make some rods that work. Thanks again for the

    diagram.

  12. Hi Jim, You might try SPECIALTY WHEEL ( 1-800-959-5800 ). They claim

All Steel, All American (made in USA) They offer any back spacing and

sizes 14" to 17". Any good tire shop can help you select the right

tire and wheel size, and correct backspacing. BTW, you can put a 20"

    wheel on a 64 Avanti.

  13. Redoing my 1978 II. Removed side markers and cow catcher. Has 1964 bumpers and grille. Looks good but the original Magnum 500s are pretty bad.

Hi Jim, You might try SPECIALTY WHEEL 1-800-959-5800. They claim all steel, all American. (Made in USA). They can do any backspace, 14" to 17" wheels. BTW 20" wheels will fit an Avanti.

Summit Racing has Magnum 500s, 15 X 6 5 x 4.5 with 4.0" backspace that "should fit". Will these work without a problem?

I like the 500s and want to keep them but "should fit" doesn't mean "exact fit". Any advice appreciated.

    Thank You Kindly

    Jim

  14. I have similar problems with my R2. The symptoms are that it would not really over heat. Oh, it would go to 200 or so which is normal during 90+ degree days. That's OK. But what I found was that water was being expelled and then eventually the car would over heat. BTW, the auto industry definition standard for "Over Heating" is when the engine will not preform as designed. It's not a temperature #. But trust me, when it gets to 240, the engine doesn't run cause the carb gas boils like water. Anyway, using a IR temp probe I located a hot spot in the rear of the head as noted by others. This hot spot locally boils the water, although the temp gauge still states 180 or 200. Boiling water expands, builds pressure and force some water out of the cooling system. Eventually the engine does overheat. I have not fixed it yet. Too lazy and now that I know what it is I can drive through the summer and deal with it this winter.

As for water wetters or cooing additives to help car run cooler. Forget it. They only produce benefits under extreme operating conditions like racing with engine at max load. There is virtually no measurable effect at idle or highway speeds. How do I know? a friend and I got tired of all the modern day snake oil salesman and their cooling tricks from fans, radiators, additives, water pumps, etc. that we did our own scientific study. I ran a development test engineering laboratory so had all the requisite test equipment. Although the test was done on a brand X car, the results hold true for idle and highway driving on most vehicles. We wrote a fun article of our exploit's on this site. http://teae.org/cooling-th

Thank You for the research and excellent article

  15. After 48 years I'm selling my 1963 Avanti, after 18 years of racing at Bonneville, Muroc & El Mirage (I hold records)I'm retiring from Land Speed racing, I will race car at Speed Week in August 13 and go for another world record at Bonneville in the D/CBGC (existing record of 209.3mph) If interested call me at (661) 251-6969 or e-mail "avantikid@earthlink.net" Dave Bloomberg

Good Luck Dave, hope to see you there.

  16. I'm wondering how many 4 speed 64 Avanti's (with rectangular headlights) are on the road? Only factory equipped vehicles please.

I am in the process of purchasing my second Avanti, 64, R1, 4spd, manual windows, rectangular headlights. I would like to find

a good rust free factory steel roll bar, I've never seen one advertised for sale. Thanks in advance for taking part in my

    informal poll.

  17. Cap and hoses are all functional. Leak is from overflow hose. Appreciate fin density comments. Assuming production, how many rows is current radiator?

You don't mention whether or not you have a coolant recovery tank or whether your car is actually overheating or just losing coolant.

It might be worth checking with a known good gauge or IR thermal imager

  18. Pulled motor and transmission out of my 63 4 speed, found back light switch control, but can not find any sign of a neurtal safety start switch. I assume their is such a switch but can not find it or any indication of it in the car or in the manual. Did find two connectors in area of the transmisison, one is for the back up light and the other may be to a missing safety switch, but again can not find any reference to it in the manual. Car had not been run since 1977 and has had atleast two motor changes before that. Assume it is not supposed to start in gear, but how is that prevented?

    I

My car left the factory as a 4 speed R2. It has both the loop for the neutral safety switch and the pigtail for the back-up lights.

I assume that all Avanti's had both, and that Avanti's with automatic transmissions actually used the wiring for the N. S. S..

If your car had a standard transmission YOU were responsible for starting it in neutral, or depressing the clutch pedal. Remember.

the car was built almost fifty years ago, people were more self reliant then.
