The job can be done by just pulling the Trans. But you will need to support the engine. As the bell housing is the rear mount. Cutting a piece of woood 8" x 10" and placing under the oil pan with a floor jack will work..You can then remove the eight bolts holding the cross member in place. The T10 weighs a 100 plus pounds.A bit of muscle will be needed. You have to push the tail shaft up into the X- frame . Till the input shaft comes out of the bell housing. This job is explained pretty well in the shop manual.."Note" This job can be done by one person. but its easier and safer with Two...

Welcome to the AOAI and welcome to the wonderful and sometimes agonizing world of Avantis as well! We're happy to have you.
As far as the doors swinging shut, they may be missing the hinge spring. Those parts should be available but installing them may be a pain. I haven't done that so I can't say but it often takes a special tool to do that easily. Hopefully someone with more experience can tell you how to do it.
Again, welcome. Don't be afraid to ask questions...this a pretty tight group with lots of experience and ideas for creative solutions to problems.
as stated above. there is a spring that pulls on a detent..only way to do the job is pull doors off. Three 3/8's bolts (9/16) socket with 6" extendsion) for upper and lower hindges. You can check and lube or change the bushings while your there also.this job can be done with one person.. but is best done with Two people...
Hope this helps. will check and post a picture. just have to chase down the manual .. darn thing keeps moving on me..lol

During my move last year I have lost my shop manual, I have recently ordered the disc from SI. I am now in the process of installing the front bumper on my Avanti. My problem is, where do the rubber pads go, and which ones do I use? They are in two thickness, 1/8 inch and 1/4 inch thickness.

Hi George,
The pads fit between the body and bumper, Because of different body thickness's . you use one or two one each side of the car. Keeps from pulling the inner mount through the body when you tighten things up.

The restoration of my 1963 Avanti is just about finished.
Putting in the new dash meant taking off the old biege overlay which looked pretty worn close up...so we painted it.
Now it's installed back on the car BUT it looks awfully shiney.
What was the finish? Gloss or matte? Or satin?
Satin...

I still think the biggest obstacle we face...at least short term, is the free market. If we can find a way to increase visibility and demand, then values increase, availability of parts can increase as potential suppliers see a market to service. The external forces such as regulations down the road have other marques to share finding solutions, the aftermarket suppliers to help and industry associations as well. As an organization, the AOAI (and the SDC) may be able to take a stand and support the big organizations with letters to regulators, but admittedly, I don’t have any idea of what restrictions there might be on organizations such as the AOAI under the tax codes for lobbying.
Sorry to make this so long, but a number of issues were brought up. I hope to see other replies. My opinions and concerns are simply mine...others can agree or disagree. I have no problem with that...a healthy discussion is what’s good...for us as Avanti owners and the hobby in general.
Very well put. I agree with every thing you typed..

Hi All,
I hope that you have had a chance to read the latest issue of the AOAI E-Newsletter. If not, you can find it here.
Please comment on your thoughts regarding the future of the collector car hobby. Where do you think we are going with alternative fuels, and will the next generation of car collectors share our current interests in use and preservation?
Take care, and Happy New Year.
Peter Miller
Hi Peter,
Enjoyed reading your newsletter. Keep up the good work.

Heater core bad.
Need to remove Dashboard.
In attempt to remove Dashboard (according to Youngstown instructions) I put too much pressure on the windshield (a lot) and it is now 'cracked'.
Soooooooo
Heater core still buried under dash that will not come out and now the windshield is toast.
Anyone have any comments or discussions on WINDSHIELD replacement?
Hi, sorry to hear about your Avanti problems.. Windshield is same as early ones. but has black band around unit. Should be available from most any glass shop..

1990 Avanti covertible
Trunk latch 'should' have a little 'popper' lever and spring to pop the trunk up so you can lift it.
I put new gas struts on it, but it just sets there with the latch activating, but the trunk won't raise up at all to unlatch the latch.
Thanks ahead of time....

Good find..Mine are working good , except lol once in awhile the drivers door autos down when I turn the key on??swapped extra switch's and relays. Ok for a few days, then happens again?? But they work all the time...

Installation was simple...in fact the hard part by comparison was removing and reinstalling the tires and rims. The downside...not cheap...over $300 for the set of four. Regardless of that...they look awesome on the car. For anyone interested MGP's website is Caliper Covers.
Looks awesome. I have put 2004 Cobra disk's front and rear on my 63. And think seeing Avanti is a lot better that seeing Cobra. also really dress's up the rear.

Update – I spoke with Randy at the Strausstown show on Sunday. After explaining the litany of fixes I've gone through with no results, his immediate thought was one or several cracked valve seats. He has seen in before in Studey engines. Exhaust leaks back into the cylinder and once engine is at temp it affects combustion and in turn causes pinging. He's going to take the car this fall, pull the heads and see what is what.
Sunken but never cracked. But these things would show up in a compression or leak down test...???

parts are on the way.. Will e-mail you if I have any questions. Thanks again.
Finally had time to install new relays ans switch's...So nice to have working windows ...Thanks again Karl
ps, you should write up a article and sent it to LEW. Know there are others who would benefit from this mod.
