  1. I can not do this work myself and I have had a very hard time finding a shop in Burlington willing to "pull the engine" for me.

Tell me more about "dialing in" the engine with the bell housing. I remember reading about it but can find nothing in the shop manual. Did the Avanti magazine ever have an article about this "dialing in" procedure? Was that where I read about it?

  2. The frost plugs in my 63 Avanti are leaking. It appears that the engine will need to be lifted in order to get to five of the six plugs. Is it possible to just raise the engine and transmission together in the engine compartment and then support them safely while the frost plugs are replaced? It appears there are no frost plugs in the rear of the engine block under the transmission bell housing.

If the transmission and engine have to be separated, is there a "dialing in" procedure that must be preformed to ensure the transmission and engine are properly aligned? I kinda remember reading about this procedure years ago but I can find nothing in the shop manual.

  3. Avanti R4275 is listed as when they switched from red/black carpet to black. My Avanti R4308 has factory red/black carpet. I have most of this Avanti's service invoices from the dealer. I believe my Avanti came out of the factory with red/black carpet. I suppose they had some red/black carpet left over which they used in my Avanti.

  4. I know where four of the nine R3 Avantis are; R5089 is in Joilet, R5237 and 5593 are in Ohio with an AOAI member and R5643 is in a museum in Ohio. That leaves R5394, R5532, R5546 (George Krem's old gold Avanti), R5625 and R5642. The last R3 listed, R5642 was originally shipped to Moline IL. (Gee, that one could be in a barn close to me waiting to be found!) R5642 is white and some say Geo Krem owned it at one time also.

Can any of you give me the location the the five R3 Avantis I have not accounted for?

  5. My 63 Avanti had a 64 A/C installed by a dealer in the late 60's. I have the woodgrain panel in the center dash and the hoses pass through the firewall as in the parts manual for a 64. I would like to replace it with a fawn colored 1963 panel if you will have one available. herbpcpa@yahoo.com Herb Price Burlington Iowa

  6. Three questions. The location of the outside mirrors varied some do to the fact they were installed by the dealers, correct? Any input on the best location before I drill the holes? They need to be in clear sight for the driver of course. Can I mount them in the fiberglass using those plastic anchors they use in houses built with wallboard or is there a better fastener? Finally, the head on one mirror is very loose. Do I have any options except to remove the mirror (break it out?) and try to scar the surface of the ball or the ring around the ball? 7. Does anyone have a recommendation on the various interior kits available....good, bad, so-so?

I've heard that the Phantom & Historic Auto kits are the same. Can anyone confirm or deny?

If you'd rather you can send me an email...

    Thanks, John

I have the same question. Mine is a red/black carpet and I would like to keep it that way if possible. If I could find a used piece for the passenger front I could make do with what I have now. Herb Price Burlington IA herbpcpa@yahoo.com
