  1. Are you SURE its coming from the rear main seal and not the back

of the intake manifold? Many rear main seal leaks end up to be an

intake thats loose. Retorquing the intake might help, check all the

intake bolts to see if they are loose, it can also help idle.

  2. I am not familar with how the 87 is set up, but as far as the body I just dont

see side pipes working with the Avanti body design. Side pipes only work on

a few cars, like the Cobra, Viper and 63 Vette. The Avanti design, being quite

european just doesnt seem to support it. Would be interested to be proven

wrong though .. so post those pictures up! ;)

    Tom

..my guys in the shop suggested that we mock up some Corvette side pipes on it to see how it looks.
  3. Maybe we should rally Ford to scoop it up?? Makes sense since its

built on the new Mustang chassis. There seems to be about 200 or

more different "special" Mustangs out now, ranging from a Shelby

to the California Special - why not an Avanti edition?? :P;)

    Tom

There well may be those desiring to scoop up Avanti Motors and continue the marque...there always has been up to now.
  4. There is a vendor selling 6 inch wide wheels in the back of Turning Wheels, I

think they might also advertise in Avanti Magazine. They are for "disc brake"

cars, which is REQUIRED for an Avanti. Stock wheels were 5 inch wide on an

Avanti, but the extra inch is worth having - more tire options.

    Tom

  5. I dont think that can be true, perhaps the '65 and '66 Canadian built

Studebakers, but the Stude powered ones use a head bolt, and also

a rear cooling port cover plate bolt to mount. Those arent going to

be the same as a GM engine. The basic idea is the same, but those

mounting ears have to be in different places.

    Tom

The bellcrank and linkage on the Avanti II are the same ones used on the earlier Avanties and V8 Studebakers. George
  6. Here are the pictures sent to my by Shawn.

Looks good .... heck ... looks better than MY Avanti in the engine compartment!

I wish I had a blown Avanti .. looks like a VERY nice starting point from these

pictures you sent. Once you get it outside, send me some of the body. I would

pull all the spark plugs and put some Marvel Mystery oil into each cylinder. Then

with the spark plugs still out, turn the engine over by hand, this should help to

lubricate the rings. After you know the engine is free, crank it with the plugs out

to get most of the oil out, then put the plugs back in. Fire it up and run it for a

little while, then pull the plugs and replace them. If the engine already seems

to be free, you can skip putting the Mystery Oil in, just disconnect the coil wire

and crank it for 30 seconds, letting the starter cool for a minute between. This

should build up some oil pressure before starting. If its been sitting for a long

time, chances are the upper end is bone dry.

  7. You are welcome. I also uploaded the other pictures you sent.

Did you mean you should have thought of bringing up the mice in the

garage to keep the wife from bothering you out of there?? :P;)

You might want to consider sealing up your garage better to keep the

mice out of there too. They are obviously coming in from the cold or

the heat (not much to eat there). You can get weatherstripping for the

edges of the door, and a scraper skirt for the lip of the door, and check

your vents to make sure there are no holes through the wire mesh.

    Tom

    B) THANKS TOM FOR POSTING MY PHOTOS ..... I HAVE CAUGHT THREE MICE SO FAR AND MY WIFE WONT GO INTO THE GARAGE. I SHOULD HAVE THOUGHT OF IT YEARS AGO I WOULD HAVE GOT A LOT MORE DONE TO MY CAR.
  8. Not sure about that stuff, but after they get on the paint, you just wet the

surface and use some Baking Soda on a damp cloth. You dont even have

to press hard .. light circular motions is all that needed. The bugs will just

come off like magic. I read about it in Avanti Magazine. ;) Works great!

    Tom

  9. No, you DO have to use the brackets. There should be a bracketed [ ]

img at the start of the link, and a bracketed [ ] /img at the end. There

can be NO spaces between the brackets and the link at the start or at

the end - or it wont work. Do a "reply" with quote and see the format

that I used. Turns out the link you were using doesnt allow direct post

of the pictures! When I first tried I got the same as you. I went into

my temporary internet files and found the picture, the location isnt the

same as the one you were using, its a redirect :

    Tom

Dang, I STILL cannot figure out how to post photos inline on this forum....

Tom, your method of simply using bracketed "img" and '/img" around the url doesn't work for me

  10. Please do NOT use chemical baits or glue trap, its just plain inhumane.

I would suggest putting some steel mesh into the holes where they are

getting into the gas tank area. Just keep them from getting inside. If

you can instantly kill the pest thats much better than causing the little guy

to slowly starve to death, and in the process attempt to chew its own legs

off to free itself. Also keep in mind that if they die back there, you have

to take it all apart to get the now rotting animal out. I think the best way

to SOLVE the problem is to keep them OUT to begin with.

  11. I am pretty sure that I have read about some modifying the stock auto

shifter to use with the extra gear, and if memory serves the mid 83 and

later Avanti II used a 700R4 and would have an altered indicator. I used

a B&M shifter in the Hawk, but that was a column shift car. My dad had

the shifter modified in his car, but I dont know what they did.

    Tom

  12. Well, he DID say "MODERN up-to-date", which leaves out the early 70's tech

that Turner/Steeltech use for brakes :P . My setup is held up at the moment

because my CNC shop has suddenly gone silent..... :o

    cobra_install021a.jpg

I have considered a few minor body changes, but yours sound much more

extreme than I was thinking. I plan on making LED front turn signals, and

updated headlights to fit the stock openings on my '63. I have the 17 inch

wheels, thought about racing stripes on the black paint, but I havent seen

an Avanti yet with stripes I like. I think the asymetrical hood bump messes

up the dual stripes. I have the modern seats, gauge upgrade will just be a

new set of SWs. I am looking into ways of improving on the Stude suspen.,

so I can cut costs, and I already have the world class four wheel discs. The

T56 6 speed install is eventually going to happen, quick steering arms, large

sway bar set, I kinda like those aluminum gas doors, etc. So far no bites to

get it into 'Popular Hot Rodding' or 'Car Craft'. Though I did get the 'Avanti

Magazine cover - its a start. Will be nice to get it back out of the garage, its

been laid up since last year from the power steering failure. :(

    L_Covershot2_021a.jpg

My next article in Avanti Magazine will be the Camaro seat install.

    Camaro_seats_4_Avanti_041a.jpg

    Tom

There are 4-wheel disc brake kits on the market...Turner and Steeltech come to mind.
  13. Here are a couple pictures of the South Bend Lathe that was used to

turn the Studebaker hubs down to fit inside the GT rotors in the first

stage of my Mustang brake install. I thought it was fitting that a

lathe made in South Bend would be used many years later to modify an

old Studebaker part(This step isnt needed with the larger Cobra rotor).

  14. I forgot to expand on what Gunslinger hit on, yes, if you drop the body on

the frame by removing body shims, then a new air cleaner will be needed.

This is the one I used on my Hawk, and from your engine picture you also

have a thick carb gasket, you could try a thin one and gain another 1/4".

    1207.jpg

Another alternative (and if I had an Avanti II) would be to match the Stude

body spacers and install an LT1 engine and 6 speed manual trans. The LT1

is a very low intake and should clear the Avanti hood with ease.
