Some of the Pre-production PROTOTYPES had R3 engines. It's not a late thing. It was an engineering exercise all along.

Yes, lots of them. Some behind the secondary venturi boosters, and also plugs below the idle screws, and also below the drilled passageway for the accelerator pump well. Also underneath the base are a couple. I'm including passageway plugs in the conversation as they technically are core plugs.

Up to 4 if you count the screen inside the fuel pump,
(not all pumps have them) the main inline filter after the pump before the carburetor, and the two small screens in the inlet needle valve seats. -
That's because every R3 and R4 came standard with the Prestolite electronic ignition, and it is wired differently than a points type ignition.

Someone messed with the pump, it's missing the suction side venturi. One O-ring goes around that. Also, there is a machined recess under where the large hold down nut screws into the main body, under the reservoir.

They were off a 52 Commander.

Side loading from the supercharger tension arm is one reason. That and the fact the pulleys are so heavy and cast iron instead of stamped sheet metal.

Silicone jacketing. Regular Studes had neoprene wires. Also, they seemed to leave off the shielding covers on Avanti equipped R3s

Vacuum advance, and a condensor. They were equipped with a Prestolite Trans-Ignitor electronic ignition, and the points switched the transistor, not the coil, so none was needed.

Single color, and no welting needed over the seat riser as they eliminated the cutout and vinyl trim for that. If you also include the trunk, they eliminated side and wheel housing carpets

if the original holes were filled in, then they should be plainly visible from the inside. You have to remove the foot vent to see it.

Nels,is that the 288 cam? The R3s I've had a hand in were quite streetable. They had the milder 276 cam.

On the new Tach, there should be three wires. Red black and green (usually). Red will be plus. Black will be ground, and green will go to the - side of the coil. On the sending unit you had 4 wires. A white ground, a yellow from the sending unit to the brass terminal on the tach, and a grey to + 12 volts, and the brown wire to the - of the coil. So to put in the new one, the grey will be your +, the yellow will tie into the brown, and go to the - of the coil, and white will go to the black as a ground.

They are the same as the V8 50s cars with the Saginaw power steering. You can broaden your search if you include that. I believe SI does carry them.(or did)
“A” and “B” R3/4 engine designation…why?

They are EX numbered. I haven't opened it up yet. do know the next serial number higher EX car did have an R3 (also EX numbered.
