Hi PK, what is your reason for replacing the engine?
1 more HP
2 don't like the 305
3 have money to burn
4 increase the Avanti value
5 want fuel injection
6 just because
7 want to go 200 mph
8 other
I'm contemplating putting a GM TPI fuel injection on my 305 just because I like the looks of TPI.

It looks repairable to me. If it were closer to me I would bid on it. bill

I have a 87 Avanti & I had a water leak in the Skytop, so I had to remove it & re-glue it to the roof. It was awhile ago & I don't remember any problems. Check the Avanti magazine for articles, I know there was at least one article. bill

The great thing about the Ford rear ends is you don't have to set up the rear end gears, you just drop out your center section & bolt in another center section with 3.00 gears or what ever you want. It usually only takes an hour to drain oil, pull axles a few inches & change a center section. Check Craigslist for a used center section.

When I installed a new radio/cd player the original radio had a module that look something like that. bill

I would take the radiator to a shop & have it flushed, remove the plugs on each side of the engine & flush out the crud & install the shroud.
You didn't say if the car is boiling over or does the gauge just show hot. bill

Did it snap under the dash or under the hood? If under the hood go under the car reach up between the engine & brake booster, grab the cable going to the drivers side latch & push it towards the passenger side. Both latches will open. bill

I'd pay $2,000 dollars, what would you pay? bill

Not sure when the government mandated them but my 1982 Avanti II has one and my 1989 convertible HAD one.
As a product of new mufflers in the '89 there is now an exhaust smell when the car is stopped with the windows open. The exhaust repairer pointed out that at some point the original catalytic converter had been removed and the fumes that it absorbed was what I was smelling. The solution is a new converter, but that will reduce engine performance.
The 1989 catalytic converter has been removed but you still smell it ? Maybe the mechanic put it in the trunk. When mine smelled I switched to a different gas station, try gas without methanol. bill

What is the condition? How many miles? Has it been maintained? Fuel injected or carb? Have you had it on a lift to look under it? Any frame rust? Any leaks? What are they asking for it? Does your wife want it? How is the paint? Has it ever been a accident? Why is he selling?

My Avanti was built on a Monte Carlo chassis so i purchased a Monte Carlo repair manual on ebay & found it very helpful. With all the GM dealerships Obama shut down there are lots of GM parts & manuals for sale cheap. Also you can search on http://www.searchtempest.com for manuals

what refrigerant are you using? R-12, R-134A or HC12a? R-12 takes the most & HC12a takes the least. See http://www.hcrefrigerant.com/charging.htm for instructions & equivalency. In my 87 I use HC12a & it works great. bill

I changed my air conditioner from 134A to HC-12a, it's cheaper & uses less. http://avanticars.multiply.com/photos

What size are your rims? My 87 has wheels that look like Corvette wheels with a center cap the says Avanti, they are too wide for 205 tires. There is no sticker on my door jam. bill

After I removed the radio I followed the wires & found there was a fuse box hidden behind & below the radio, once I got all the old wires out it wasn't hard to identify the wires. I posted some pictures at

wanted: wiring diagram for a Sony XR-787R radio. I removed the radio from my 1987 Avanti & there is no diagram on or inside it. I checked SONY site & it's not available. I need to know what color wires go to speakers, (front, back, left, right) ignition, power antenna, ground, fuse. thanks bill

I posted some pictures of how I used a 1987 Monte Carlo Service Manual to read "check engine codes"

How hard to install a modern In Tank electric pump for EFI ? Is there a return line already in the tank?
Jim Wood
Hi Jim, I am not a auto mechanic but i can give you my opinion. The Avanti tank drains from the bottom & I think in tank pumps exit out the top, there is no return line. I think there are EFI pumps that do not have to go in the tank. It would not be to hard to modify the Avanti tank for EFI, maybe someone who has done it will reply. bill
