  1. Had my '82 at a well attended cruise-in last night in a downtown area that closes the streets surrounding a variety of stores/restaurants that attract non-typical car show crowds...heard the usual questions associated with owning an Avanti: "Who makes it"? (since it's not a Studebaker I tell them "Avanti makes it"); "That's made in Italy, right?" (I say "only if there's a little Italy in South Bend, Indiana"; and the inevitable "They made those in Canada" (which of course leads to a short dissertation of Studebaker & Avanti history).

I have overheard some discussions while hanging out in earshot of the car which are a little different. Perhaps because my car is black is why I've heard "It looks like the Batmobile" (usually by a kid)...also, usually from adults, "That looks like a James Bond car" (silver DB5 vs black Avanti II???...I guess it's just the sixties vibe it exudes)...and to me the most unusual (I've heard it from kids & women) "The front of the car looks like the back"(memories of the '48 coupe).

Just wondering if anyone else has heard similar comments or anything else funny/interesting...Joe

My favorite 'over heard' comment came from a father to his young daughter (I think): daughter--"there's no grill"; father--"That's because its got a rear engine" comments on my '63. Dave, Michigan

  3. A friend installed seats in his 1964 R1, out of a late model Chrysler, (1999 I think). They are high back, with the 3 point seatbelts built into them. He had to fabricate new mounting brackets, but all in all the job went well, and the seats look great in his car. He also had the seats reupholstered to look like the 1964 style material.

I did the same with my '63. They are leather that I dyed black to match the rears. The uphostry pattern matched so well they could be factory. The built-in shoulder harness resulted in a clear rear floor, very neat. The driver seat is power. You must get seats from a two door model so they fold forward. They did result in a higher seating position, but if you're 6 feet or under, they work. They are fairly firm, but quite comfortable.

  4. 1964 Avanti R2, just had the carburetor professionally rebuilt. Runs great except full acceleration wants to die. Seems to be getting some type of fine sediment in the carb. Anybody think I should pull the gas tank and have it cleaned and gone through? Any other ideas. First post. Thanks.

Be sure your gas tank vent is clear. The vent hose that drops down thru the frame often get plugged by insects. After driving check if you have a vacuum in the tank when you remove the cap. You could try driving with the cap off or loose to see if that makes a difference. Also check that the fuel pump has the pressure line to the supercharger to boost the fuel pressure. good luck.

  5. I'm in the process of re-assembling a '63 Avanti. The 1/4 windows retain four different pieces of interior trim. The 'B' pillar trim retains the interior 'B' pillar trim and the weatherstrip goes on the 'B' pillar trim piece. So, the interior must be installed first. Also, the rear glass gasket retains the interior upper 1/4 trim. The 'A' pillar trim retains the interior 'A' pillar trim with the weatherstrip attaching to the trim piece. (The 'A' pillar and interior header trim also tucks under the windshield gasket). The interior trim must be installed in the proper order with the weatherstrips unless you want to redo the weatherstrip later. Hope this gives you some guidance. Best of luck. Dave.

  6. I would like to know if someone has any pictures and/or instructions or suggestions to properly rig slings or what ever method was used to mount the body of an Avanti back to the chassis. I would like to know how they do/did it in the factory.

I have the doors and windows removed and all interior parts and am doing a frame up restoration. The chassis is complete and I was thinking of cleaning the body thoroughly on the underside, then remounting the body back to the chassis, mount the doors and get proper fit, then get the body painted.

I heard there was a video out about how Studebaker built the Avanti and would like to know where I can get a copy. Please reply to Mike @ mbreaz@yahoo.com. Your reply is appreciated.

I have successfully removed and installed two Avanti bodies using the following method: With doors removed (and everything else also removed to reduce weight), a 2" pipe is placed under the bottom of the top door hinges and wired into place, a second pipe is inserted throught the rear wheel openings and under the fuel tank steel reinforcements and wired to prevent the pipe from moving rearward. Four cable pullers are used to raise the body. This works only if you have a strong ceiling or upper floor to pull from. This setup will work with a lower ceiling than if you lift from the roof. I also used this method with a '53 C body, but with the front pipe through the side vent openings (with the front fenders off). Hope this gives you some ideas.

  7. I am in the process of building a '63 Avanti from two junk '63's that were missing the Avanti engines. I have installed a small block Chevy with an overdrive auto. I am building this as a frequent driver, my No.1 vehicle. My problems: Can anyone help me with the proper wiring hookup for the distributor (GM high energy) and the alternator (Delco with built in regulator). Also need help on wiring the gages at the engine. Any Help will be appreaciated. Dave.
