  1. My first contact with Avanti Motors about buying the car was in the second week of February - 3 or 4 weeks before the report "boarding up" of the factory in Cancun. The car was picked up after that point ( fedex/passport took their time...). Communication with Avanti after that point has been difficult at best. I can understand that this has been a very difficult time for them - and I guess I expected that after getting such a "discount". I've heard from another person on this board that took receipt of a 2007 just a few days ago - he's got a few more - still relatively minor - problems than I've got. I gave him the cell number for Jim Wilson - the best way I've found to get help.

If those of us who took the risk to buy 06 and 07 cars - at a steep discount - from a company that's on the brink establish communication about any of the minor problems we have ( hood clearance is the only one I've seen), we can hopefullly get past some of the "communication problems" with the factory. The best case would be stronger support from the factory. The worst case would be yet another orphan Avanti generation - something the "faithful" have been able to deal with for 40 years...

Since you are the newest "new" Avanti owner, what interaction have you had with either Avanti-atlanta or Avanti-Cancun since the reports of the factory being boarded up?
  2. Tom, it wasn't meant as a dig on the older Avantis. While I'm selling the 89 convertible to help pay for the new one, I'll be keeping my 63 R1 forever ( or until I get it "done" - which ever comes first :D ). I guess my comment relates to most younger people's interest in newer cars with more bling. They have no idea what the 2006 is ( and WHO made it???) - yet they know the 63 is "just" an old car. It really does depend on the audience. Anyway, it doesn't matter to me! The new one will be my wife's daily driver - she loves it. I'll keep my "old" cars for the weekends and ocassional drives to work.

The rims on the new one do look good. Thanks for having the factory use them !

I've got Cragar Starwires on my 63 and I think they look real cool too!

    Jeff

Congrats on your purchase of a new Avanti, but I had to comment on not

getting much attention in the older Avantis ... come on!!

I cant drive down the street without people pointing. I stop somewhere and

people come up and start asking questions. Not that I am saying you will

not get noticed driving the new Avanti, but its not that different from the 63.

Unless those rims truely do make the difference? I do have to admit that

I have noticed more interest since I installed them almost 2 years ago. I

literally have people yell out "NICE CAR!" .. including kids on bicycles. The

convertible Avanti looks better than the coupe, I think they could have done

a better job with the rear window treatment. Was the top down when she

heard the yelling? Maybe you just dont HEAR the comments with the 63? ;)

Anyway .. glad you are enjoying your new toy. B)

  3. Our new 2006 Pewter Convertible arrived Wednesday morning. I took it out for a short ride last night after work with my wife. I must say, it's a totally different ride than my 63 R1 ( no surprise) or the 89 Convertible that we're selling ( looks like it may be gone this weekend...). It's got plenty of get up and go. The ride's a little rougher than the 89, but that's most likely due to the low profile tires. The front seats are very comfortable - but I don't think the back seats would be good for much besides grocery bags ( and Bob Ziff made Linda sit in the back during our "test rides" in Cancun!). We'll try to slide the seats forward a bit and see if the kids will fit in the back this weekend.

My wife drove the car to DMV yesterday and said she had 3 different people yelling at her at stop lights asking her what kind of car it was. We very rarely have had that happen while driving either of the older Avantis or the Hawk.

I'll see if I can get some good pictures of the three this weekend and send to Lew along with a short article for the next Avanti mag.

  4. I re-covered mine with the same vinyl used on the other panels.

    Jeff

The plastic covers don't look too bad but the one I got would not stay on with the clips and I ended up using two chrome, interior sheet metal screws. I think they mis-calulated the arc of the clip retainers. The outer ones would not allow the clips to lock in the holes. There was also quite a bit of trimming necessary but it will cut with sharp scissors..

The problem with the originals is the deteriorating foam which in turn cause the clip retainers to pull out. I imagine a company like Just Dashes could repair it, figure big $$$.

I'd be happy to send a picture of the plastic one installed if you want.

  5. Well, at least Jim Wilson is still there. I took them up on the reduced prices for a 2006 - it was picked up on Monday. It should be here in about 10 days +/-

I called Morrow Monday & Wednesday and keep getting an answering machine.

I plan to be in Hotlanta for several days in May, June, and August. I'll drive there if we won't hear anything before then!

  6. Those of us who went to the grand opening of the Cancun faciility in October saw what was probably going to be the surprise. A 2-seater based on the earlier Lister produced in Villa Rica ( which itself was in the Chicago Auto Show a few years back when the XUV was unveiled). Here's hoping we all get to see that car someday soon! We were asked to not take any pix...

Avanti did have a "suprise" for the Chicago Auto Show:

  7. The rear glass is wrapped, and looks similar to a late 70's vette. I've yet to figure out how to attach a picture on this board - I'll send you a picture of it.

    Jeff

Thanks to the poster of these pictures.

The new car looks great. It has an aggressive stance, it maintains the Kellogg look, and I think the crisp lines of the current Mustang windshield/A-pillar/roof are the most appropriate coupe yet for the Kellogg body.

The pictures didn't capture the rear window of the coupe, though. Could the poster note if the rear window is wrap-around, or if it is stock Mustang? The wrap around rear glass is key to look of the coupe IMHO.

    Great pics. Thanks again.

DRN, your account settings won't let me email you. Send me an email at jeffgrohs at pacbell dot net and I'll send you a picture of the coupe rear.

  8. Thomas, it was great talking with you on Monday. Sorry you couldn't get back out on Wednesday - I posted some pix on the aoai website - links on the homepage.

I didn't notice, did Doug keep the original shifter or switch to a hurst? Not sure if you had a chance to talk to Dave Thibeault ( usually typed as "t-bow"). He's a vendor from Massachusetts that might carry a few items you'd be interested in: hurst shifter adapted for an Avanti T-10, aluminum heads for a stude 289, other aluminum goodies to lighten the front. Lionel Stone, down in your area, also carries some speed parts for stude engines, though I've heard his fit and finish may not be as good as t-bow's. check the classified section of a recent Avanti magazine for their contact info.

There's another avanti-only chat at http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/avanti/ if you haven't already found it.

  9. while I don't subscribe to it, my dad has for many years. it uesed to be in a magazine format, but is now closer to a newsletter. The good news is that it's all great restoration info and pretty much no advertisements. I've seen occasional stude or avanti info, but it's mostly big 3 info. For Avanti-specific info, I'd get as many of the Avanti magazine backorders as I could find - especially for post-stude info.

    Jeff

  10. get the Shop and Chassis manuals from any of the vendors ( www.studebakervendors.com). Also get this book http://www.avantipublishing.com

    that'll cover the Avanti-specific part.

    good luck, Jeff

i can find on Amazon, Google, and Alibris plenty of books, including "Dummy's guide" for classic car restoration.  What is your recommendation for:

    1. basic on methods, tools, what to avoid, what to do.

    2. specific to fiberglass, chrome, etc.

    3. specific to Studebaker era Avantis.

    thanks!

  11. It goes easier with an extra set of hands - especially on the rear. same for putting them back on. don't forget to coat the inside of the bumpers with something ( I used rustoleum "chrome" colored paint. others have used silver por iirc).

    good luck

  12. it should go into the back of the drivers-side head. There's a single wire that goes to it. You may have to remove the shielding to see it. They may have just disconnected it, and it'll be threaded into the head, or they got a block-off plate ( like you'll see on the passenger side).

  13. Back off the adjustment ( concentrics ) until the shoes are the closest to the center. Make sure parking brake is off and car is in neutral. You may also have to play with the vertical alignment of the shoes - shift them up and down. You should be able to tell that alignment is right when you put the drum on.

    Jeff

I replaced the brake shoes on my 64 r2.  Now that the wheels are back on, what is the easiest way to adjust them?  When I jacked up the car, I was unable to rotate the wheel.  I'm sure I have overlooked something very elementary but don't know what it is.  Any help about how to adjust the brakes will be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,

    J.
