  1. Thank you for the information. I haven't done a tune-up on a car since the late 80's (75 Dodge Charger SE). I had ordered the AC Rapidfire plugs but was unsure of wires. I will look for a heavier shielded set. My car runs great, but I have no idea when the previous owner did plugs and wires. I was under the car last weekend changing oil and greasing the chasis and noticed several of the wires were cracked at the boots to the plugs. I figured it couldn't hurt to change things out. My car is also a stock late RQA model with points. I need to refresh myself on points; I helped a buddy years ago.

    Thanks,

    Tony

  2. Hi Tony,

Hey if you don't mind, let me know how you make out. I still haven't done the exhaust on my 67, and I have a 700r4 trans too. Thanks,

    Charlie

    Charlie,

I had my exhaust installed last week, without any issues. I had it installed by a local Mom and Pop shop that works on tons of older cars. The only issue they encountered was the driver side pipe coming from the manifold interfering with the steering arm. A little elbow grease and it cleared. There were no issues with the 700r4 trans.

I ordered my exhaust from Nostalgic and I was not happy with the pipe on drivers side coming from the manifold. It was twisted and kinked in order to shape the pipe. It looked really restricted in some areas. Fortunately, the shop was able to cut and weld in pieces to reduce the restriction, at a cost, of course. The mufflers sound great. I went with glass packs and they have a nice deep rumble, not the hollow metal sound I had before. Actually, at idle they are quieter than before.

    Take care,

    Tony

  3. I had a 75 Dodge Charger SE, 400 with the Carter Thermoquad. It was the Cordoba body style, but with more power. Built like a tank too. It had a long front end like the Avanti. A buddy and I rebuilt the motor in 83 but the body started to show wear and rust. I sold it when I went to college in 85. I have driven nothing but 4 cylinders since. It's nice to drive a V8 again and get dirty. The 67 dodge chargers were great looking cars. My brother got a 67 Charger after he sold me the 75. In fact, he still has it. That was a fast car!

  4. You're absolutely correct. I have gotten awesome advice from this forum. I come here first if I don't feel comfortable with what I am doing or about to do. My experience is limited to the 19 months I have owned the car and from the work I did on my 1975 dodge charger (25 years ago)!

What mufflers do you have on your car? I can get the quiet tone or glass packs. I am just curious how quiet, the quiet tone mufflers are. I like an Avanti rumble but not something annoying. I did check with some local muffler shops and the cost is very reasonable to install the system. And they warrant their installation.

    Thanks again,

    Tony

  5. Funny you guys would suggest that! I was under the car tonight looking at the existing pipes, looking around and getting a feel for what it would take and I came to that very same conclusion. I thought, "since I have to cut the existing exhaust off; what would I do if I ran into something I couldn't handle". Then I would really be up (bleep) creek! Thanks for your insight.

    Thanks,

    Tony

  6. Thanks, Gunslinger!

I will need to get under there and see how the clearance is now. I believe the only pipe that is noticably different is the passanger side. But I think that has to do with the previous owner bending and welding his own pipe. I still plan on ordering the system though. I am still considering installing it myself, but I may quickly change my mind when the pipes come in.

  7. I am ordering an exhaust system from Nostalgic and wanted to find out if there are any clearance issues with a 700r4 transmission? Nostalgic tells me no but I have read on this forum that there is. It's impossible to tell on my current exhaust, since it has been repaired in pieces over the years.

Thanks for any input and advice.

    Tony

  8. I was able to check the rear wheel cylinders, shoes, rear seals, break lines/ hoses, calipers, and brake pads. I did not find any leaks or problems. I did notice some brake fluid under the master cylinder where it attaches to the booster. I ordered a master cylinder from Orielly's but when I went to pick it up; it was not the one I ordered (mis-labeled). I had them re-ordered a master cylinder for a 69 dodge Monaco. I hope to have it in this week.

  9. I checked the back of the tires and the brake lines and no leaks were found. I will pull the wheels off tonight to inspect closer. Will I need a drum puller? The only brakes I have done didn't require one, but I have read that for the Avanti I will. I suppose I can rent one from my local auto parts store. Do I need to go through someone like Studebaker Intl, SASCO or Nostalgic to order wheel cylinders, pads and such or is there an equivalent I can get at NAPA? I know I can get the master cylinder at NAPA.

Thanks everyone for the input and advise, so far. The more the better!

  10. I made it home safely! :) I pulled the reservoir cap off and the front chamber was dry! Yikes. I must have a leak in the system. It has to be very recent; I checked the fluids 2 weeks ago. Isn't the front smaller chamber for the rear brakes? Reguardless, it looks like a brake job weekend! Can I bench bleed the MC in the car or do I need to pull it? If I pull it, I may just go a head and replace it.

    Thanks ,

    Tony

  11. Well, my pedal is going to the floor! :( The car still stopped, which was nice. Anyway, I am going to swap out my MC. I have a 1970 Avanti II RQA0406. I have checked Bob Johnstons site to figure out which one I have. My question is: Is this a straight forward job? I have done a master cylinder (helped) but 25 years ago on my 1975 Dodge Charger. Are there any surprises I should expect.

    Thanks

    Tony

  12. Hey everyone! I have a 1970 RQA-0406 with a wobbly power steering pulley. I have checked with Oreilly, Advanced and AutoZone for a replacement with no luck. They suggested pulling it and bringing it in. I wanted to check here first to see if anyone knows of a specific replacement.

    Thanks,

    Tony

That's what I was thinking about doing. I was going to place a 2x4 between the jack and the Bell Crank housing ( I think thats what its called); then place my stands along the frame near the font. Will the 2x4 be enough to protect the center pin?

    Thanks everyone for the input.

    Tony

Well, I ended up placing the jack just in front of the bell crank housing and lifted the car enough to reach the top bolts on the shock from above the tires. I placed the jack stands at the front of the frame near the radiator. Everything went off without a hitch.

    Thanks again for the input.

  14. I lift both front wheels off the floor simultaneously by placing a hydraulic floor jack under the front cross-member (K-frame), using a 2x3 block between the jack & frame. Be sure to avoid the bolt that comes through (I think it may be for the steering arm attachment). By jacking from the front, you have more room and options for placing the jack stands under the frame. Don't forget to set the hand brake and chock the rear wheels.

  15. You shouldn't find a lug wrench in the spare tire well...it's kept to the left of the spare tire well under the carpet in a spot molded in the fiberglass for it. Just lift up the carpet on the left side of the trunk floor and you should see it...if it's still there. The molded area for it should be quite apparent.

Sure enough, the lug wrench was right where you said it would be; as was the jacking instrucitons. I have only had the car a few months. Still trying to get myself familiar with everything. Enjoying every second too!

Thanks for the information and the input.

    Tony

  16. I happened to remember that if you look under the spare tire cover, there should be a tire changing instruction label glued or stapled. It tells you the appropriate jack locations.

Thanks guys for the information. The photo is very helpful, thank you. I will check under the spare tire cover. I lifted it up to look for a lug wrench but didn't inspect the cover, at all.

    Thanks again.

  17. I am going to replace the front shocks on my 1970 Avanti and I would like to find out the best placement of a floor jack in order to put the car on jack stands. Its been years since I have done this so please excuse my dumb questions.

    Thanks, Tony
