Well, I have done a few retrofits. Not on Avantis but on other cars of that era. I have never replaced the evaporator nor seen the need.

Compressor, Condenser, Expansion valve, hoses  and O-rings.

On one car, I added a higher volume fan in the passenger compartment and some, electric pusher fans in front of the condenser.

thanks for the tip, I'll definitely start with those things then.  But is the Avanti expansion valve in the center console with the evaporator?  Just because honestly if I'm going through the trouble of taking this all apart,  the expense of that part is the least of my issues.  🙂

Do you have any knowledge about what size/model condenser units would fit on the 81 Avanti?  I've got someone checking over at Vintage Air, but they don't seem to know much about the later Avanti's.

When my old A6 compressor bit the dust, I changed over to the Pro6TEN.  Bolts right up,works great, and is about 20 pounds lighter.

Thats exactly the one I'm thinking about for the compressor, but wondering what is a good evaporator and condenser?  I hate taking things apart and then finding out I have to special order some part that will take months while the car sits in pieces.  I'm thinking if I redo the AC I'll just redo the whole thing all at once.

  3. So I'm trying to figure out what radiator hose to get for my 81 with a 305.  (I've already bought one wrong one, would rather stop the trial and error approach)

    SI sells these:

Based on looks, it appears I need the "Short" one (though it looks longer to me, and is more expensive than the "long" one), but do I need the other one anywhere?  I sort of thought maybe i needed both parts since the hose is two segments, but neither one is short enough for the bit between the radiator and the coupler.  Some advice please on what to buy.  Thanks.

  4. the link Pantera posted above is what I used to troubleshoot my window.  It now works, but not super great.  There is a pretty well regarded replacement option called Nu-Relics that some folks have done with success and that may be in my future someday.

  5. Thanks folks.  I am pretty set on replacing most of the components, and am really just looking for anyone that has recently done this and can recommend actual parts that fit and work well, beyond the compressor, so I can source some of the stuff before tearing the car apart.

I wrote to Myers to see if he has recommendations or can sell me the whole shebang of what i would need, but with the holidays and all, i havent heard back.  I'll post updates as they happen.

  6. Hi folks.

Upcoming project is refitting the AC of the 81 to 134a.  Before I start randomly tearing things apart, does anyone know of an existing guide or spec sheet or anything on the 79-81 Avanti AC components or what suitable replacement upgrades may be?  Anyone on here post a thread on doing 134a conversions on the RQB's ?  Obviously the compressor I can swap out easily.  there are a number of aluminum new ones that just bolt on perfectly.  I'm thinking this one or similar:

    21-2201SH | Compressor | Pro6TEN | Super Heat Style | Single Groove

But the other things, the expansion valve and evaporator and whatever else... what does anyone suggest and where is it all for access and removal?  Is everything in the console?

Finally, how does one access the condenser up front?  does the radiator have to come out?  or is there a better easier way?  Thanks all.

You posted this in the '63/'64 Avanti area.  Since you have a '81, I think you would get a better response if you posted it in the '65-'83 Avanti area. Members that follow the year range of '65-'83, will have better hands on experience, and should be able to answer your question.

    Good Luck,

    John

Ah crap.  how did that happen?  thanks for the heads up.

After suffering way too long with a failing Blaupunkt radio in my 1983 Avanti "everyday driver" .....I bit the bullet and ordered a new AM-FM receiver a couple weeks ago.

I purchased this radio, which I installed yesterday, from a firm called Custom Autosound, located in Fullerton, California.

They specialize in radios which fit, as they say, "The Great Classic Vehicles"....and each of their units is custom made to fit the particular car. (perfect fit, no cutting of the dash required)

Well, the install went well, with all the new harness wires clearly marked.....It sounds great!..... And I just want to say that I'm very happy with this firm's products!:)

The cost, I thought, was quite reasonable....about $189 (plus shipping), and comes with a two year warranty.

(The unit I purchased is called the Concours Series..USA-230, to fit '63-'85 Avanti dashboards)

I'm thinking along similar lines for my 81.  But is there some guide to removing the existing radio?  There seems no obvious way and don't want to damage the panel.  thanks!

Thanks. Any pictures of the installation?

I didnt get any in process shots, alas, I had more than hands full trying to keep the weatherseal goop from getting all over everything.  🙂
I'll try and get some finished pix tomorrow.

This seal seems identical to the profile of the SkyTop seal.  What I did was first put in a 1/8" flat seal and then this seal on top.  I just put it in today, and honestly I didnt do a particularly great job of it, but I think it works just like the original seal.  I may need to adjust the alignment a bit of the glass, but this is the best solution I've found.

To be honest its possible that the 1/8" first seal is unnecessary, or may be better as a 1/16" seal.  This is not the easiest thing in the world to dry test.

  13. On my 81, the heater fan makes noise but there is almost zero airflow, even on High.  So figured I would start with the basics and look for clogged ducts.  The workshop manual for the Studes shows an air filter on the passenger side, but I see no such thing anywhere.  Where on the later Avanti's with AC is that intake and filter?  Or does it not exist?

On a general note, is there a way to troubleshoot the fan and ducts without pulling apart the entire heater core assembly?  And is there a good step by step on doing that somewhere?

Thanks in advance for any help.

I was the national account manager for Skytop.  I not only signed franchisees but trained them as well.  I also had a shop in Norwalk, CT.  We had the distinction of being the only shop able to install power moonroofs in Maserati Biturbo's. Anyway I am located north of Boston not really in the sunroof business anymore but if you have an Avanti with a Skytop there is a very good chance I can repair it and have the facilities to fabricate parts.  To address an earlier comment, in the trade a moonroof is a glass panel and a sunroof is metal.

Hi again.  I'm wondering if you have any of the SkyTop weatherseal for the front?  Its a fuzzy one that wraps around the two sides and the front.  I have a new rear one but cannot so far locate the front one.  If you do not have this, would you maybe know how to find it?  was there a manufacturer for it or was it used in other more mainstream cars that may have more easily available parts?  Thanks in advance!

Thanks! It would be great if we could figure out what year Ford or Lincoln used these sunroofs. The parts would be easier for others to track down.

Hi Steve.  Did anything ever come of this thread?  Its a decade later, and I'm also looking for the front weatherseal of my 81 Avanti with a SkyTop moonroof.  Dan Booth has the rear one and is sending it, but he doesnt have the front one that wraps around the two sides and front.  Any advice on your search would be welcome.  Thanks!

  16. A couple of hours of WD40 later it came free!

For some ungodly reason there is a cloth liner on this that is held on by cloth tape that goes all the way to the edge, meaning it sits in the slider channel.  So after 40 years it had gotten shredded and folded and gunked and then it sat for a decade hardening.

But now its FREE!  one step closer!  on the plus angle, the leather side is spanking new looking.

  17. Hit a snag on my SkyTop re-bonding project:  The sunshade won't budge.  Its open all the way, as it has been since i got the car.  I got the glass out, and figured that would maybe help dislodge the sunshade.  No dice.  stuck fast and completely.  any advice?

I've tried moving the power bar forward and back and that changes nothing.  there were some shredded bits of weatherseal, fabric liner, and some cloth tape up there, so it could be gunked up, but not sure what to do about it.

  18. Hi folks.

What exactly ARE the wire wheels in the 81 Avanti?  The build sheet and paperwork just says "Wire Wheels" but certainly there is a manufacturer/model?

I've got a couple of these with some irreversible rust issues, and wondering about the ability of finding a couple of replacements, but don't have any idea what to look for or what the wallet-damage would be.

Any info is welcome, thanks!  Image of my wheel attached.

  19. An update on the door:

What I did was mark where the door was and where the striker plate was, and then also mark a point a quarter inch higher.  I removed the striker and loosened the door bolts, and used ratchet straps wrapped around the whole car, 2x4 pieces and some bits of old carpet to keep the door snug into the frame and then raised it a quarter inch out of alignment on the striker side.  Tightened it all down, and now its perfect.

**I know this may not last** if there are other problems that are causing the sag, those may resurface.  But it works for now, and I probably need to remove doors and all the weatherstrip when I paint, so we will see what happens then.

Highly recommend the ratchet strap method of keeping the doors snug, although it means you have to climb through the windows to get in and out of the car to tighten the bolts, it was the best solution for me.

Now on to the next thing.  🙂

  20. Hi Folks.  Just a bit of info I slowly uncovered.  I had a missing knob on my 81 Recaro seats, and all attempts to find Recaro replacement parts proved fruitless.

BUT it turns out that the 80 style Recaros are the same as the ones in E21 BMW's, and BWW parts are a lot easier to come by, including the Recaro knobs.  They are BMW branded, but so what?  I can deal with that.  Heres a link to the knob I wound up getting, which is a perfect fit.  Stupid expensive for a piece of plastic, but there ya go.
