One thing threw me a curveball. On page 25 of the Electrical section of the workshop manual has a picture of a different horn. I'm assuming that everything was rush-rush in trying to publish a manual at the same time they were building a new car.

Thanks for your input. I think I found the answer in the parts catalog. it specs the Sparton horns.

The engine had a BIN of $14,500. I know the fellow selling it and he is a top-notch guy. What you were were looking at was a genuine Studebaker crate engine straight from the factory, or at least what was left of Studebaker, when it was sold.
I wish I could buy it and store just as it is, a crated unused engine.

Sorry, don't know how recent this topic is, but a recent purchase has me scratching my head. The horn I received is an Auto-Lite model HW. The horn terminates in a triangle and one side of the horn looks like half of a grapefruit. Now working off the Authenticity manual I see nothing but Sparton horns that are relatively rectangular and flat AND receive the spade connector from the wiring harness. Is there some little known history to the Avanti??

I live in Massachusetts and above ground home heating oil tanks are 12 gauge steel by code. If the answer is not 18 gauge I've got to go with 20. Can't be 25 or 30, just can't be!

I was wondering if someone knew off the top of the head who supplied Studebaker with their Avanti frames?

I saw where you're from. I certainly hope so

I have an aftermarket Stewart Warner speedo and I suppose I would have been happy with it but it has no hi-beam indicator light! I believe I have sourced a 140 mph can but really want the original script on the Studebaker speedo. I didn't notice until recently that for both the 140 & 160 speedo, all the numbers follow each other around the dial except for the last numbers (140 or 160) which are turned in the opposite direction for easier reading, one would guess. The Studebaker International faceplate I see listed in the catalog looks nothing like the original which is ideally what I want.

I'm looking for a 160 speedometer for my '63 Avanti. If that's not possible I was wondering if an AUTHENTIC looking faceplate re-pop has been made?

It's like Christmas in May!

Regarding whether the engine was intended for a production vehicle, did Studebaker or Newman-Altman keep the loaded production orders for the cars in cue to be built? If we knew how many orders were taken for R3 R4 cars.....
-
Just wondering if Studebaker set any recommended shift points on the tachometer for the R2 4 speed cars. Then, I was wondering how much that differed with the R3 car.

Here's a plug for the Studebaker Avanti Authenticity Manual, the addendum Number One to it, and the Service Letters. Very helpful to figure out exactly what you've got.

For what it's worth, I'm looking at my dog eared copy of the parts catalog and it lists "part number" for a R1 & R2 short block as 1557834, R3 1563288, R4 1563289. Maybe these are sub assembly part numbers in the Studebaker system.

Thanks for the input. This one does have the spin on oil filter. But again in 64studeavanti's picture, this one hast the casting number with the number 3 below it in addition to two slotted screw heads. Is there significance to these?

I have a 1963 Avanti with a non-original Studebaker V-8 engine. There is no serial number stamped on the boss and I was told the engine was purchased as a short block. Embossed on the engine are the number 1554641 with the number 4 above it. Is this the Studebaker number for the V-8 block? What significance is the "4"?
