The Studebaker Museum is having a sale, The Avanti Monograph for $25. There is no info other than "A detailed production analysis of the Studebaker Avanti. 51 pages".
I'm curious what these 51 pages contain? A sample page would have been nice to see. As the owner of a 63 which has been modded by a previous owner (Chevy engine installed), I'm curious if this will be of any value as I'm not planning to take it back to oem, but am fine with the car as it is.
Appreciate any insight as to what the Monograph contains. Thanks Mike

I have absolutely no involvement in this car which I stumbled across while looking for parts for my project, but I have spoken to the individual selling and the PO who did the work and think this car deserves consideration for anyone who is looking for an original Studebaker chassis update with a Chevrolet drivetrain plus more. Here is the link to the Craigslist ad

And here is most of the ad

Thank you. I will PM you with what I know I need for sure (there may be more) but we will start with the list I know. Thanks.

I do not see any ads on that CL except for a cool restomod, but I do need a few parts to make my car functional, hood latch, wiper assembly, etc. my email is michaelstroz@gmail.com and I’d appreciate hearing from you. Thanks

Well, it's gone and I say good riddance. I hope that if someone got it, they got a smoking deal well below the asking $11500.
Here's part of an email I got from someone who had knowledge of the car via a report from an Avanti club member.
"... He just called to tell me the car is beyond rough. The paint looks like a $300. job. The interior would need either replaced or re-dyed. There are cracks in both front and rear bumpers. The rear windows have not worked for 20 years. The top works but is patched. The owner is selling it to buy another either '87 or '88 Avanti conv. In other words, he would rather sell it and buy another one, than fix this one." Also in a subsequent conversation, there was significant interior water damage noted and a non-standard gauge... I had three knowledgable Avanti Club members telling me to walk away. I never was that serious with the mileage discrepancy noted in the CarFax, so it was easy to accept their recommendations. Just too much to try and bring back.

it’s been looked at and it’s very rough. Maybe at best a parts car. More to follow.

I agree that there are red flags with the buyer and a 0 feedback and really no discription and not a lot of pictures either. Carfax shows the car in NY for most of its life and a mileage discrepancy which might just be clerical. And it shows a FL transfer in about 2004 and very few miles since then... Inspection is a must for sure. And it didn’t sell with a different seller last year when it was offered for about $15000. Still tempting.

Ok I'll bite, how many bulbs are required to do the dash (I may be behind the dash shortly and I like the one time approach and forget).
Also can you dim leds?
Thanks.

WayneC, Got it! Thanks for the additional post. I really appreciate it. It will be a couple of months till we are ready to tackle the interior but I like your concept. I'll probably PM as we get a bit closer but I do like the design. Rgds, Mike

WayneC thanks for the info! I really appreciate it.
A few points:
1. What you did was in a Jag, correct? I'm not saying it doesn't transfer, but just to be clear.
2. I don't understand the orientation of your drawing.
3. Why countersink the bolt holes?
Watching this with interest. Thanks!

Did the original 63's have the option of adding additional fog or driving lights or was that something that the Avanti II had exclusively? If the 63's did have them who was the manufacturer? Thanks.

Would love more info on this approach James T if you are still with us! Really old post...

Can anyone tell me the number and type of emblems/trim on a 63 R1?
1. Hood Spear
2. Avanti on front of hood
3. Studebaker on rear of trunk
4 & 5 some emblem- not sure of what on the area behind the rear passenger windows and the rear windows.
Any others, if the car is not supercharged?
Thanks, not near a parts catalog.

Did the 63 achieve its rake through springs or two different size tires or both. Thanks.

I sat and drove the 81 Avanti I'm considering buying but as expected, I'll need to do some modifications to the driver's seat to fit comfortably. The car is an 81 with Recaro seats.
I was able to drive the car with the seat in a significantly reclined position but it was just too cramped if the seat was upright. All of the Recaro adjustments work (with maybe the exception of the headrest adjustment, just didn't try that one), but I'm going to need more legroom. There appears to be 6 inches between the rear of the driver's seat and the front of the rear passenger's seat.
I could use some, if not all of that space. So is there a way to move the seat or add seat extender rails, to get more legroom? I am concerned about not raising the seat too much because of the limited headroom with the car's sunroof and the roll bar, at least for me. So I'd appreciate any ideas or leads on how to proceed. Thanks!

Studebaker International offers a CD that includes both the shop and parts manuals for $19.95.
Not seeing it and I just looked. Does anyone have a link? Thanks. Rgds, Mike

WayneC, Water sloshing in the doors after a car wash, thanks I had not considered that! Avanti sunroofs are notorious for de-laminating where they meet the body... not an expensive fix if you can do it yourself, but tedious work. - Does this make them inoperable, or what? Thanks. Mike

All, I'm going to look at "My new 81 Avanti II" on Wednesday. It has 80,000 miles and is represented by the owner who is an Avanti Club member to be in excellent shape. But what should I be looking for/at? I expect to get to my mechanic to look at the mechanicals. There may be an issue with the sunroof but outside of that what to evaluate? Thanks in advance for any input.

Any issue with using an AGM battery?
OPTIMA RedTop Automotive Battery, Group 34/78? -
Studegary, Sorry I do know how to spell Loewy, sometimes I type too fast and spell checker doesn't catch those mistakes but his designs got me interested in the Avanti in the first place!
However, I did think that once the bumpers became wrap around in 83 that the Loewy design was superseded by a different chassis design so I learned something there!
Anyway is there somewhere where the total manufactured number of Avanti's by year are available?
TIA. Rgds, Mike

My wife asked me a question last night and I don't' know the answer.
How many Avantis were built in total?
And how many were of the Lowey Design, so Studebaker and Avanti II until the chassis redesign in 83?
TIA, Mike

Anybody have their radio out or know the dimensions of the radio? Really don’t want the current cassette radio but some of the new radios with Bluetooth which allows streaming music from smartphones might work, but I need the dimensions. Thanks.
-
Cbitz23, I’m not removing bumpers except for the cow catcher things that are already off the car according to the current owner.
The strips along the sides might come off but no bumpers.
Avanyi83, good point about the spare. Might have to rethink those different size tires. Thanks

So the search for my Avanti continues but I'm starting to realize that my best option is a late original Avanti II (80 to 83) based on recommendations by members of my local Avanti chapter and some of you. I really wanted a 63 but because of my budget, the fact that I don't want a project, I want the creature comforts (AC, PW, PS, PB, cruise, etc), I need a car that is somewhat reliable and gets good gas mileage (wife will occasionally drive and there will be several 2000+ mile trips taken in this car), I need the Recaro seats that were optional/standard in these years because of my height, and I want an original Lowey designed car, it just makes the decision more focused on these years.
A local club member has an 83 that looks good and once he gets it out of winter storage, I expect it will become the top contender for my $$. He represents that it will need a paint job soon, which is fine because I'd want to strip those side fender protectors off. But the two things that "bother me" about cars later than a 63/64 is the lack of rake and the square versus round headlights.
I understand that some of the rake can be put back in with working with the springs and having different size tires. Correct? What are the pitfalls and rough cost?
But has anyone ever done anything to convert a 64 or an Avante II to round headlights and how would that be done, or is it just blasphemous?
Thanks!
Avanti Monograph, is it worth $25?

But what does it say? What info is contained within? Not sure why this is such a mystery!
