Thank you for the response. Looked at both the rebuild and the Turner Brake conversion. Big factor was that all for Dunlap four calipers have be machined out and new stainless steel inserts install.  The information I have is that it was done by Whitepost Restoration four or five years ago but the pad supports  and retainers were not replaced and have since badly rusted.

The cost of new seals and the pad supports and retainers plus new pads, "should be" less than the Turner conversion assume my time is worth zero.  Although I will probably eat those words after I have spent time getting the shimming done correctly.

I will post my results, cost and labor when this brakes are back on line.   I did not call Myers.  Should have been my first call.

Thanks again.  You are always a wealth of  good ideas and suggestions.

  2. I am rebuilding the Bendix/Dunlap brakes on my 63 Avanti.   All parts are rusted and I need to replace the Pad Retainers P/N 1100-27  and the Pad Supports P/N 1100-27 both of which are rusted out or pieces rusted off.  I have search the web and all the Avanti parts suppliers I could find but no one I can find has these parts.

So is there any source that I have missed for getting replacements for these parts?

    Any suggestions would be helpful.

    Thanks

  3. I am want to re-chrome the bumpers on my 1963 Avanti.  I want a quality re-chrome but the car will be a driver not a show car. I am located in Cincinnati, Ohio can anyone  know of a good re-chroming shop in or near Cincinnati?

    Thanks

  4. Guessing this has been addressed before but here goes.  I am trying to rebuild the original Dunlap calibers on my 63.  When I attempt to pull the caliber piston out of the housing I get A LOT of resistance from the piston sliding off the center pin.  Also when I attempted to put the piston back in after lubricating the new seals and pin with new brake fluid, had to press it in with an arbor press.  Stoppewd  after a 1/2" as this seems wrong.

Would like to rebuild them in lieu of the $150 per caliber it cost to by new/rebuilt ones but I would like to have "Sophia" stop reliably once I get her back on the road.  Any thoughts?  More info needed to answer?

Thanks in advance and all have a Merry Christmas and Great New Year.

  5. To All:

Thank you so much for all the advice and opinions.  As soon as the weather breaks and I can get the car up in the air will do a complete survey.  Since I plan on this being a "driver" was going to go to the dual circuit master cylinder.

Also looked at the disc brake adjustment procedure in the Avanti Service Manual.  WOW! Can't believe the steps required to change pads and adjust them.  Looked at the Turner conversion and it certainly seems a lot easier to change pads.  Will consider that change also.

Again, Thank you all for some very thoughtful replies and relating something I don't have, Experience working on Avanti's .  Hopefully in the near future I can pass along some help too.  When I get the brakes operational will give you all and update.

    Regards,

  6. This is probably a :"dumb" question but here goes.  Acquired a 1963 R-1 Avanti  automatic in August of this year at an auction. Wife of owner said it had not been driven in three or four years but stored indoors.  Oil was clean as well as transmission fluid and radiator fluid.  Loaded the car and had it delivered by trailer/truck as it  would not start.  Unloading the car discovered it had no brakes.  Once off the trailer opened the brake fluid resevoir and found it was completely dry.

Question 1: Given that the car was in storage for 3 or 4 years, should I start by rebuilding the master cylinder, calibers and rear brake cylinders or just bite the bullet and start at the master braked cylinder and booster and replace all brake parts and lines with new and rebuilt parts.  My thinking is it would be best from a time stand point to just rebuild the entire system.

Question 2: Are the brake parts that have rebuild kits available that I can rebuild them myself result in usable/reliable parts or are rebuilt/exchange units a better option.  I have always done all my own brake work on all of our vehicles for the past 30 years, so have "some" experience in rebuilding brake parts but I am NO Expert.

Thoughts or experiences world be appreciated.

    Thanks for reading!

  7. 1963r2:

Sorry not to respond sooner was out of internet connection area.  Thank you for the response.  I have sent a quarry off to Myers to see what they may have.  If no lick ther may try bending my own.  Will waste a lot of rod but hey isn't that fun of owning these cars?!!

    Thanks again

  8. Probably answered this many times before but.....for a 1963 Avanti, is there a source for the truck striker, the "u" shaped piece that attaches to the trunk lid?  Looked at a number of parts sites but only find Hawk and Lark  strikers.  Also is there a reinforcing plate that the striker attaches to?  Our trunk lid only has two holes.

    Thanks for the help!
