Dan was especially helpful with his advice and parts when I was doing work on my 63 R1. Thanks, Dan! JWL

What is the purpose of these rubber grommets that fit over the front bumper brackets? They look like they are not to fill the openings where the bumper brackets come through the body; rather, they look like they are to cover the rectangular shaped openings that are just below the bumper brackets inside the grille area. Correct? I would also think that there are no grommets to cover the body opening where the bumper brackets come through. Thanks in advance. JWL

17 out of 19. Not too bad. JWL

avantifred, I would not install those NOS filters. Who knows what condition the filter media is in after all these years. You don't need to have your engine ruined by a failing filter plugging up oil passages with filter media that has come apart. Best to use them for garage art and use new filters in your engine.

I have never seen a Blake Avanti, but I say YES. Reason, high finish quality would carry over into a nicely done trunk.

I counted 11 too.

I'll guess there were some hooks or eye bolts fastened to the frame that used to secure the Avantis during shipping that were removed by the dealers as they were no longer needed. Wow, that was a looooong sentence.

Found a non-Mercury tilt switch at Fry's. May redo the manual switch to improve appearance as I like the operate at will over the automatic function.

The bulb and switch were bad. I rigged a manual switch in place of the mercury switch so I could operate the light at will. The ground to the light is switched and comes from the parking light circuit. I may go to Fry's this afternoon and see if they have a mercury type switch I can use. The one I Installed functions but not the most attractive. It's all about looking good.

Thanks, start from the bulb and socket and work my way back. This should be a fun job. Nothing like making a light light up.

Just found the trunk light in R4541. I went looking for it after viewing the above posts. It is non-functional, but look forward to getting it working again. According to the wiring diagram it seems the light is on the backup light circuit. I'll verify further. The switch is still on the trunk lid. Should be fun getting it to illuminate again. Thanks!

Mike, Unimogjohn over on the AACA site posted a comprehensive blog when he was working on his Avanti. You may want to go back and re-read it as there is much valuable information. Your project is looking good and good progress too.

Look at the other noteable Avanti owners when visiting the site and reading about the Jardine car. I am from Santa Fe, New Mexico and one of its more famous painters, Fremont Ellis, owned two Avantis. He was a customer of my father, the Packard dealer there. I remember seeing his Avanti II displayed by one of the galleries.

They have come a long way since I last helped you to load them in the van. Nice!

I say FALSE. No decals applied to AC equipped Avantis.

I am going to say defects were noted on supervisor's clipboard. I have a copy of the Production Inventory Form for 4541 showing many notations and corrections.

I got a set of radiator hose clamps for R4541 at Mac's Model A Parts. Bright plated.

I got five new wheels from Wheel Vintiques, the 6" wide Chrysler type. The new tires that go on them are Toyo P215 70R 15 with a narrow white stripe.

Earlier, I considered a space saver spare tire, but decided to go with a full-sized one when I bought new tires for the Avanti.

The new P215x70Rx15 spare tire left no room in the well for the tire changing tools. Also it stuck up about an inch above the trunk floor.
First, I made a new spare tire cover out of 1/4" plywood. Secured it with a long battery hold down J-bolt. Welded a washer on the body bolt at the bottom of the spare well and hooked the J-bolt through it. A 6" metal dish was drilled and attached to a hole in the cover. The J-bolt protrudes and a wing nut is used to tighten the whole thing down. I painted the inside black and covered the outside with some indoor-outdoor carpet. Now, the spare tire is secured in the well. I made a new cover as I did not want to modify the original cover in case a future caretaker wants to go back to stock.
Next, what to do with the loose tools? After thinking about different ways to secure the tools (jack, handle, and wrench), I found a heavy duty fabric bag at The Container Store. It is about 28" long, 10" wide, and 8" high. It has a zipper opening on three sides and handles on each end. Cost was about $15. It is all fabric and flexible. I then made a base for the bag out of some scrap plywood from the cover job. This wood base better supports the heavy tools and keeps the bottom straight. Finally, got some heavy duty VELCRO and fastened four grippy pieces to the bottom of the bag. The VELCRO grabs the short pile carpeting and keeps the bag from moving around. Now the tools, with room for other stuff, are secure, easy to get to, and take up very little room.
Overall, I am happy with this solution to securing the tire and tools. I would attach a photo of the bag, but the files size for attachments here is too small for my use.
Thanks.

Okay, I'll venture a guess: No. 3 - 0 miles. Guess is based on stock speedo would not register the high speeds. Que no?

Original design was as a 2-seat. Loewy was disappointed his design was changed to a 4-seat.

Go to the carrier directly, not through a broker. A good and reliable nationally known transporter can move your Avanti in a covered trailer for about $1 per mile. There are many good ones out there, but some not so good too. I have used Inter-City with good results. JWL
