  1. Yes, i believe that I also have the same Sacramento model, the Touring Coupe' option covers the end shafts with the annodized aluminum plates. Also part of the Touring Coupe' option are the western aluminum wheels. Still unanswered is how to test the rear bulkhead mounted amp. Lou Cote

  2. My 85 has the Blaupunkt too , not sure if it is the Sacramento. Mine seems to not have a lot of volume control, not a lot of base response, is this a symtem of amp. not up to potential? Or is it time for new speakers? How would you test the amp. to be sure it was doing it's job? Lou Cote PS, James what wheels are hiding under the stock hubcaps? Are you attending the Kansas meet ?

  3. Working in a transmission shop for 31 years, I have seen in the last few years more specialized fluids for European vehicles. Until the mid '90,s when electronic solenoids invaded transmissions all we stocked was type F .The came along DEX 111 and Mercon. And from there it has snowballed. No whining from the BMW, Mercedes,Volkswagon folks. I had to run to the BMW dealer to get fluid for a late model, 2 1/2 gallons was over $$ 175.00 our cost!! Some of the autoparts stores have begun importing the Pentosin brand, much more affordable. Lou Cote

  4. Dex 111 will work ok, the chances are if the unit has been rebuilt in the not too distant past that the brass lined clutches were replaced with the fiber style. The majority of the damage that I find during teardown, is caused by two things: the use of a screen instead of a filter. The second is caused by lack of service, with any debris floating in the pan, passes thru the screen and into the pumps, valve body and governor assemblies. Lou Cote

  5. Are you sure that it is the needle that is stuck? Have you tried to briefly ground the wire from the sending unit at the tank, with a helper to read any changes at the gauge? If when grounded there is no change then it could be a gauge problem. If it does change the problem is in the sending unit, with todays fuels or prolonged storage can cause sending unit to stick in one spot. Depending on which chasis your car is built on Monte Carlo / El Camino ot the Caprice Classic will determine the type of sending unit used. Lou Cote

  6. The main idea behind using the rubberized spacers was to fit the body to the frame, in other words you don't want to go direct fiberglass to frame think cushioning effect. The idea behind raising the body in front came about with the use of the Gm engine, it is narrower, taller than the Studebaker. The filler panels in the front fenders came about as the Gm engine is a couple hundred pounds lighter which also made the front end sit higher read larger gap between top of tires and wheel well cutouts. 7. I believe that the 76 models were the first with a catalitic converter. Depending on regulations in your area you may be able to delete said item, they can be prone to age related internal collapse and failure, clogging up your exhaust. I have purchased a cat back system , in stainless for my 1985 from Don Simmons. For my parts stash Dan Booth had a head and intermediate pipe. Working on a friends 64 Don Simmons made up an intermediate pipe to replace one that someone made up that almost touched the transmission pan -no more heat in that area needed. Lou Cote

  8. Have you talked to Don Simmons at Silvertone Exhaust systems, his ad doesn't show 75 to 83 but he should be able to build something. his # 519 485 1966. Another person with exhaust for the Avanti is Dan Booth, when Avanti motors left SouthBend, he bought all spares, and has advertised having parts. His # 800 AVANTIX. Lou Cote

  9. The small block chev is narrower and taller. The stude V/8 is wider and a bit shorter. The intake manifold design on each also has a lot of bearing on this too, on the stude the manifold is below the top of the valve covers. On the Chev the intake sits above the top of the valve covers. Lou Cote

  10. The Enco service station that I worked at in the early 1970's sold Atlas tires, also sold Atlas tubes and patched flat tires with Atlas supplies. What do your production orders say came from the factory with? The tie in with Sears Allstate tires came into play with some of the Bonneville record attempts, and began with Paula Murphy, Barbara Nieland and Bill Carroll driving from New York city to LA then down to Tijuana Mexico, up to Vancouver BC and back to Bonneville. Andy Granatelli then drove the car to to speeds averaging 145.99 MPH, all on Sears Allstate tires. Picture can be found in John Hull's Avanti STudebaker and Beyond book page 43. Lou Cote

  11. The correct way to route fluid cooling would be thru the radiator then thru the aftermarket cooler then back to trans. Front line at the trans is pressure out rear line is the return. The radiator may have been bypassed because of a leak, is it possible to ask the former owner? Lou Cote

  12. Which ones are leaking? The gaskets at the head pipes are the most likley. Simply removing the two nuts on the head pipes, and loosen the exhaust hangers, pull down remove old gasket and reassemble. You can use FelPro gasket # 60052, it has a steel inner ring to aid sealing. If your Avanti still has the stock studs you can replace them with brass ones from your local hardware store. Lou Cote

  13. The charcoal cannister does not connect to the fuel pump, the cannister is used to collect fuel vapors from the tank and is connected to a hose that is connected to the carb, vacuum pulls fumes in. This is with a non vented gas cap.. The AC pump is identical to the one that I bought from Dan Booth. Lou Cote

  14. Assuming that your car still has the origional fuel pump don't you think it's about time to replace it? The ethanol based fuels are hard on all rubber products: hoses fuel pump diaphrams etc..The " T" fitting on the frame about the middle of the door is the main pump feed ,that has a plug in it to drain the fuel tank,if you need to. When you get to the point of replacing the pump, pack the pump cavity with clean chassis grease as todays motors don't put much oil to lube the pump. Lou Cote

  15. You could use one from a 1980 chev blazer, full size 305/350 V/8, that is what I have on my !985. The third line it is in the center is a return to the tank,it is necessary with the alcohol laced fuel being sold today and because as we all know the Avanti is very warm under the hood read vapor lock.
