In order to properly set throttle pressure you need to set it following the book, with a pressure gauge. Had an owner complain, no passing gear. Installed gauge power brake in Drive to 1500 rpm , it only showed 70 psi. It took about 8 turns of the adjusting link ( shorter ) to get it within the 80 to 85 psi. Lou Cote

As Jaguar used a simular version of this trans, parts for it and repair experts should be available in the U.K... Lou Cote

Not having the P and 1st adjustment means that a grommit in the linkage is worn out, on the Avanti it is at the shifter end of the rod. In the SI catalog part # 1539489, insulator, shift lever. Lou Cote

Have you tried looking at a shift cable from an 1988 Monte Carlo or Gran National with floor shift? Have you removed the old cable to compare it to whats available? Lou Cote

These are an Ultra after market wheel, with an Avanti sticker on them. The real wheels were a Western Wheel made by Rockwell, simular to those used on Pontiac's Trans Am in a honey comb pattern blacked out centers and bright aluminum outer section. Lou Cote RQB 4240 Touring Coupe Package

DLP 750, The Touring Coupe option WAS available on any of the Avanti's 1983 to the last of the 1985's. Now the 1983's were the 20th. Anniversary Special Edition Coupe', and Touring Coupe' model. See John Hull's Avanti the Complete Story, page 45 thru 48. Lou Cote'

If this is an FMX that outer lever is ONLY for passing gear. The modulators job is to elevate line pressure when engine vacuum drops, shift firmness and to a certain extent timing. Now remember that the carb to to cross shaft rod had a certain amount of give in it or pull back, it has spring in it, and may be releasing the lever from the kick down detent. Are you sure that you have a ford unit in car, tag with any serial # ?? With the engine warmed up and off the choke a 19/32 drill bit should fit, see the shop manual for a picture of this. Lou Cote

On the FMX, the outer lever is only for passing gear, and should only hit the detent at wide open throttle. Lou Cote'

Is there any chance that your car still has the origional rubber fuel line? with todays gasohol unless you are using compatable fuel line what you see could be deteriorated rubber fuel line. I use the fuel injection hose that is made for gasohol. The Avanti has rubber line at the tank, possibly at the kick up area and at the pump and fuel filter. Lou cote

I stand corrected, never was very good with abbreviated state names. Lou

Why not support our vendors? They are supporting YOUR vehicle by carrying the suspension parts to keep our cars on the road at a reasonable cost. The Thibeault's in Maine are probably closest to you if shipping a long distance is a cost concern, I have purchased from them and I live clear across the country. Or if you have plenty of time on your hands take the whole assembly to your local FLAPS and see how far you get. Lou Cote

I also use the center pin and center of rear diff.. I place front stands under under lower a arms, for the rear depending if you are working on rear axle, place at front of rear spring mount. If you don't I place stands under the sway bar mount on the rear spring pads. My special built stands start at 19 1/2 " and telescope to 26 1/2 " Lou Cote

Would this car be at the Bells Studebaker Museum? I am south of Bellingham by about 60 miles. Lou Cote President Club Avanti North West

When you pull down to the first gear position , when it applies depends on governor weights and rear end gear ratio. It only does what you selected it to do. Same thing when you manually up shift, except that you are on the throttle up to the redline or less. Lou Cote

This number in the 2016 Avanti roster shows Marlin Brown of San Bernardino Cal. as owner. Maybe sold since roster was printed. Lou Cote Club Avanti NorthWest

I will give this more thought, but as you can see from the diagram above there is a .250 ball and spring that engages the rooster comb that is supposed to lock in all the detents. I have seen the spring broken or bent. If you go to remove USE caution as it can and has been proven to fly and disappear into the darkest corner of my shop. Lou Cote

If your car has a GM tilt column there are some screws in it that sometimes loosen up which will give up and down movement. Gm mechanics should be familiar with the fix, BE Sure that you specify they use loctite on the screws. BTDT. Lou Cote

The EGR valve is located on the passenger side of the intake manifold between the carb and the valve cover. It is about 3 inches in diameter, with a single hose going to it. Lou Cote
