  1. It appears the French publication, Autoretro magazine will be doing an article on Studebaker Avanti in an upcoming issue.

Hints of that is when they solicit reader's photos of their car in the current issue, which they will feature when the article is published.

"We plan to discuss the Mercedes SL / SLC and Studebaker Avanti soon. You who own (or have owned) one of these cars, your user or restaurant testimonial interests us. Tell us about your joys and sorrows behind the wheel of these cars, the maintenance budget or even the points to be inspected in priority before purchase: your experience interests our readers who would in turn like to take the plunge but are still hesitant! Each participant will collect their photos and receive a copy of Autoretro in their mailbox ... As long as you mention your postal details!"

I was figuring that someone had the '63 listed in a roster, meet event, etc. with my name.

Chances of a vehicle serial number being shown would be far greater in a registry than a membership roster, provided someone started one for Studebaker Avantis.  Do you remember anyone asking you to submit information on your Avanti including the serial number?  And if you were asked, did you cooperate and submit it?  If so, you can hope someone will come forward who may have an old copy.

Vehicle rosters don't usually state more than the year, model, and body style.

  3. Gotcha!

Her name was Peggy Sauer, who came from General Motors and worked for Raymond Loewy/Snaith from 1962 to 1964.

Correct that she had a hand in the interior layout and colors, but her notable contribution was the slide-out vanity tray with the mirror on the underside of the pop-up lid.

Of course it also appeared on the Lark-types for 1964.

That brings back memories of working on a Montreal.  It was a nice looking car (at least for its time).  I am guessing that it was a black market car, because I do not think that they had normal sales in the USA.

No, it was the actual 'show car' that was commissioned by Bertone, specially for the event (hence its name) upon which all the production models were based.  I believe it wasn't until 1970 when they became available for sale to the public.  But that is correct, no Alfa Romeo Montreals were ever sold in North America.

  5. Oh, how I wish it could have been a 'special' for Canada's Centennial celebrations that where held at Expo'67 in Montreal!

(Of course, your answer is correct, as Avanti did almost zero marketing in Canada in 1967.)

According to Stu Chapman, had Studebaker still been manufacturing cars in Hamilton a year later, they would have had a display in Montreal at the 'Autostade', along with the (once) Big Three, AMC and Volvo, which later became a football stadium once the Expo festivities were over.  And Alfa Romeo did have their 'Montreal' show car concept in the Italian Pavilion.

  6. According the E.T. Reynold's biography that was published in the defunct Car Classics magazine, he stated, "Where everyone referred to Harold Churchill as 'Church', Sherwood Harry Egbert was always MR. Egbert, from the sweepers to the Vice President."

  7. From the South Bend newspaper which ran a story when the Avanti II was introduced, most of the employees were in the 60-65 year old range...just the ones who lost the most, pension-wise, when Studebaker closed the doors there.

When I went on the tour of Avanti Motors in 1983, many of them were still working there. Also at Avanti Parts in another building, some of the office staff were also ex-Studebaker employees including a cashier who started with them in 1955.

  8. That would be one way of looking at it

However, I was hoping someone could quantify the number of Avantis set free to roam the planet.

Do uncompleted units count as 'all of them'? There is talk of unfinished cars in Mexico.
