I want to replace my original shifter with a Hurst (seems to a common practice). Since I'm new to the Avanti world, what should I be looking for? Is there a particular Hurst model that I need? My plan is to replace the shifter rod with the original Avanti rod so that it looks original. Any help would be appreciated.

Found the rims I needed. Thanks to all for your responses.

I'm restoring a 63 R1 that had some very old radial tires that I what to replace with the original bias 6.70 x15 ( I know, I'm giving up performance but I want original). Of the five wheels I have, they are 4 different sizes. Does anyone have a set of original wheels for sale. What are the correct specs, wheel width, backspace (offset).

Does anyone have a relatively good overflow tank for a 1963 R1 for sale. The one I have is banged up pretty good and has been extensively patched. Also , is there a source for the correct radiator hose clamps.

Just browsing thru the SDC judging manual and came across the comment that clear coat paint is not acceptable. Does this hold true for a restored 1963 Avanti or is an Avanti judged differently?

OK. How about the engine color. Mine appears to be black. Is that correct?

Just starting to get my 63 R1 ready for a new paint job. Is the formula for 'Avanti White" available. This is a complete color change so I don't have any white to match for a formula. Also what color should the engine be? I've been told that the wheels are "Wimbleton White. Is that correct or is there a specific paint code for the wheels.
I have not yet decided if I want to go with radials or stay with bias ply tires. At St. Louis this past August there seem to be a big discussion regarding the correct bias tire. What tire is closest to correct?

SI no longer has the dash pads. They are looking to have them at some time in the future but could be a while.

OK, I know these are hard to come by but I need to find a replacement dash pad for my 63 Avanti. I checked with Just Dashes , but pretty pricey for my purposes. Mine is cracked very badly and not repairable. I would like to find just a good used pad. Any help or leads would be appreciated.

Gunslinger,
Thank you for the info.
I noticed your listed "interests". I would certainly agree but maybe in a different order!!

What is the correct wheel color for a 63 R1 painted the Avanti Red with red interior? I just acquired this car and it has 3 black wheels and 1 white wheel. I may change the color to turquoise. Would that make a difference in the wheel color?

Just purchased a 1963 Avanti and will be needing new upholstery. I believe the 1964 claret red is different then the 1963 red but I still may be interested. can you e-mail pictures and pricing to
ellagee@charter.net. What parts are you looking for in trade?

A friend of mine has a 1969 Avanti and is missing one wheel cover. Does anyone out there have one in decent condition for sale?
-
Thanks to all for all the great info! Still negotiating on the deal. Just wanting to get a better idea of what I'm getting into. The car seems to be a good "driver" as is, a RI 4speed, 70,000 miles. Good hog troughs. For show quality it would need paint, upholstery and chrome.

OK. I have a shop manual. Should have looked there first!

How difficult is it to replace the dash pad on a 1963 Avanti? Does the whole dash need to be removed or can the pad be replaced with the dash in place? I am new to the Avanti world. but I'm looking to purchase one which needs the pad replaced.

This thread did get off subject a bit , which is just fine because I'm learning a lot about Avanti's, and I now have a much better idea of some of the trim differences of the 2 years. My ultimate goal would be to find an R2, 4 speed, turquoise exterior and turquois interior, round headlights. If anybody has any leads feel free to let me know about it.
-
I do prefer the round headlights on the 1963's but I was wondering what other changes were made for 1964. It seems there were some minor interior trim upgrades and exterior badging. Any more specifics????

I just recently became interested in acquiring a 1963 or 1964 Avanti and have noticed comments about transition features from 1963 to 1964. What should I be looking for to distinguish between the 2 years, ie. early 1963 vs late 1963 and 1964?
Can anyone check out a Detroit R2 for me?
in 1963-64 Avanti

I live about 100 miles west of Detroit. Lived there my first 40 years. I restored a R1 4 speed 2 years ago. May be able to help you.
