Good thought, but no Pete.

What event, which greatly effected Studebaker Avanti production, occurred on 3/16/62 ?
-
I lucked out several years ago..Dave Thibeault got me one of the last NOS Avanti radiators from SASCO..It's in my '63.
-
Thanks for your comment Nelson..I do not need a radiator right now..but if I have a radiator issue down the road, I would like to be somewhat prepared.
-
Question....In '63-'85 Avantis, all else being equal, do modern aluminum radiators cool as well as traditional brass radiators?
-
Looks to me to be two well thought out installs...Congrats men!!

I don't believe Studebaker ever chrome plated an Avanti fan...even for R3's & 4's!

Love chrome. The orange one looks nice enough. You've found something that rhymes with orange. Bet it looks great!
Yes it is unusual.... although I've seen aluminum and even fiberglass aftermarket engine fans on Stude Avantis, I've never seen another 'factory stock' Avanti engine fan highly chrome plated....It makes me wonder who did this, and which Avanti it was originally intended for??

The bracket on the engine.
You got it!...this might be a rarity, however I've seen this twice....The lower 'ear' or 'leg' of the L or R engine mount bracket (bolted to engine block) can fatigue and break off.....
When this happens, although the bracket is still bolted to engine by the two top bolts, it will twist allowing engine to drop around 1" on the broken side....This situation can also tear rubber motor mount apart.

Pretty good answer, but not the one needed here!

Anyone?

This problem was corrected in mid 1961 production for V8 engines.
Studebaker used a smaller oil passage in the rocker arm shafts to restrict oil to the top end and a larger drain hole in the heads to get the oil back to the pan more quickly.
Correct..these mods enhanced the Avantis high speed potential...Other oil related modifications occurred when the 'R' series engines were introduced!

I would say just about everything!
But there is one item in particular!
-
Concerning the front engine mounts of a Studebaker Avanti...what item will sometimes fail on high mileage cars or on cars driven hard or raced?
(not referring to rubber items or frame)
-
PS...I really shouldn't have said "chronic problem".... oil return to the pan wasn't a problem at all in day- to-day normal passenger car driving.
High rpm use was another matter!

Avanti and Jet Thrust engines have 16 lobes. Other Studebaker V-8 engines have 17– one for the fuel pump on early V-8 engines. If you count the lobe that is bolted to the front of the cam it would be 17 and 18 on engines 1955 and after.
Great reply!....(and not counting that front fuel pump eccentric)

oil flowback from the heads
Yep!... improved oil flow back to pan..accomplished in a variety of ways.

What chronic problem in the Studebaker V8 engine did Stude engineers solve when the 'R' series of V8's was introduced?
-
In a parts grab last year, I acquired a beautifully chrome plated Stude Avanti fan blade...It's an exact Avanti five blade steel 17" viscous fan blade..but chrome plated.
It appeared to be NOS or 'almost' NOS, and is installed on my '63 at present....
Has anyone ever came across a Stude Avanti fan like this?
-
Studebaker V8 camshafts have ----- lobes.
1) 16.....2) 17....or...3) 18

Anyone?

Number 2: There is a divider in the inlet port on the Lark/Hawk bonnet.

Exactly correct!.... (I always wondered why Stude engineers felt that divider was necessary?)
