Hi Ed!
You had some interesting R3 trivia questions. I was wondering if you know of a "complete" source of R3 knowledge you could recommend? I've heard that the heads used on R3's were originally developed for an undeveloped 340 CU V-8 engine. Any truth to that? I guess I'm hoping someone has already pulled this information together somewhere.
Any thoughts?

Hmmm.....R3 engine block....that's certainly interesting!....Do you mean you have a Stude engine block that was prepped by the Granatellis at Paxton...or is it a short block that Dave T. converted to R3 specs??
Consider writing up a short story on what you have, and posting it on the Avanti Forum....Best regards, Ed

Hi Mark, Those R3-4 engines are certainly intriguing!....The one person I know with a wealth of knowledge about those engines is Studebaker parts vendor David Thibeault...He's built a few, and as far as I know he still owns one.....Good guy, prefers phone calls over emails...His tel # is 978 897 3158 (before 7PM EST.)....Take care, Ed

Thanks for responding to my question about the frame manufacturer. I thought I came across something about "Armor Guard" and the frames. I have Avanti 63R1400 and was wondering if that was early enough to have been assembled by Midland. If so, how would I identify it?

MFG, I am interested in the 4 speed set up. If still available, please give me a call; 760-450-7339.

Hello Dave, I feel bad that I have to tell you a fellow from the local Stude club came by last night and left a deposit.....he has a truck and a helper, and will pick up the parts this weekend.
I'm getting a bit older, and didn't really feel up to horsing the parts around myself.....Aluminum tail housing or not, those T-10's are very heavy!.....Not to mention the heavy flywheel and cast iron clutch housing!.....Take care, Ed
PS...If somehow the deal doesn't work out, I'll let you know first.

Hi mfg......did you ever find out what happened to Dick Vaux's Avanti?
Steve Remick

Steve,..I met and spoke with Dick a few times (lastly, at the Stude National Meet at Warwick R.I.), but I do not know his family.
Not sure of R4892's location........ I would add that everything about that car considered, Dick's R4892 would have a realistic value close to the 'Egbert' Avanti (R4130), or even the factory R3 jobs! (Just my opinion!).....Ed
PS...Yes!...Hope to see you at a Stude/Avanti meet sometime soon!

Steve, I'd say R4849 is at least a $40K car...and frankly I'd no doubt have to sell my current cars to 'comfortably' purchase it! However, I first saw that Avanti around 1968-9 when it had only 7,000 miles on it....It was beautiful then and, in my opinion, really hasn't changed much!....Take care, Ed
PS...Back in 1990,when I restored my own '63 Avanti (63R1379), I copied the 'look' of R4849 as closely as I could remember!

Steve,... A very similar car to Dick Vaux's is featured on the You-Tube video ......"My car story with Lou Costabile...1964 Studebaker Turquoise Avanti with R2 engine sound".
This particular Avanti, (R4849), I remember from 'way back', and I have contacted its owner, Scott Vermillion, asking him to let me know if he should ever decide to sell it....I'd really like to purchase this Avanti!
Again, it's very similar to R4892!
PS....Take a look at the post "Merry Christmas to all Avanti Trivia players"..... in the Avanti Trivia section of this forum.
Take care, Ed
