  1. As far as I know the Halibrand wheels were a dealer installed factory option in 1963 and 1964. There is an old thread that explores the subject, as well as available alternatives, "Halibrand wheels for studebaker 1963/64", try searching for that.

Attached is an old ad for the wheels. These are the correct wheels for the car.

  2. post-10698-0-75327000-1479899791_thumb.jpgI was thrilled to see the cover the latest Avanti Magazine with Randy Rapp's amazing first production R3 on the cover. Randy's car had the correct reproduction Halibrand wheels from Real Rodders and they looked spectacular. We all remember for how many years so many of us looked for a set of the original wheels (of which I have a set), but even after acquiring them, could not use them since the magnesium was likely to be brittle.

I was instrumental in having these wheels reproduced. Real Rodders is nearing the end of the run that was made and there will not likely be another production run. Soon, these wheels too will be collectors items.

  3. In spite of owning a 1963 Avanti in 1963 (I now have a 1964), I did not remember a rock group called the Avantis. I heard them on the 60's Sirius channel today.

Here is the link to their original 1963 hit song, Keep On Dancing!

    Or just Google it.

I guess we should all be fans?

  4. Dave recommended to me a 225x75x15 tire ( I chose the Maxxis thin white walls from Coker https://www.cokertire.com/tires/styles/radial-tires/maxxis-narrow-whitewall-radial.html). They do look larger on my 1964 Avanti, I had previously run a set of 205x75x15s, a difference in height of 2", so the car sits about an inch higher. I really cannot decide if it makes a difference or not. I put the tires on the reproduction Halibrand wheels, which, while I am bias, I think look terrific. Someone told me now it looks like the Avanti Steve McQueen would have had, if he had one.

Visit his web site: http://www.realrodderswheels.biz/ or Google Real Rodders Wheels to learn more about these wheels. The wheels are 15X6, as suggested by Jon Myers. Jon will be offering the spinners. These are exact replicas and are correct in every way.

  6. post-10698-0-03516200-1413994133_thumb.jpegA dead on accurate replica of the long talked-about famed #7011 Halibrand wheels that were offered as a dealer option by Studebaker for the 1963-64 Avantis, Hawks, and Larks. The new wheels are 100% USA made. They are made out of aluminum not magnesium as the originals were. They are being produced and offered by Real Rodders Wheels.

. All wheels are one-piece cast just as the originals, in US foundry using todays state-of-the-art tooling and casting methods. Unlike the originals, these wheels are manufactured up to OEM specs and testing, with todays safety standards built in such as tire safety beads, rim and tire bead seat angle, radial cornering and crash testing etc. and are tubeless.

Wheel molds were made from an original OEM NOS wheel supplied by Studebaker Club authority Jon Myer. Upon Jons suggestion they added equally to each side of the wheel to arrive at a 15 x 6 width for both better handling and tire selection.

The spinners are also exact replicas of the originals and are being offered through Myers Studebaker Parts. Price is about $349 each plus the spinner from Jon.

  7. Thanks for the responses. So far, no answer. I am going to change the connectors to the parking and head lights, the ones on the driver's side look as if they have been melted by power steering fluid. If that fails, I am in going to try the turn signal switch. When I find it, I will let you know.

  8. I have a problem with my turn signal. When the key is in off position and I turn on the parking light, the turn signal operates in the left hand turn position. After a short time of flashing normally, it freezes on. When the key is on and the lights are off, all four lights flash, although the right lights dimly, when the signal is in left turn position. If the lights are on and the key is on, the left hand turn signal just freezes on.

I have checked the light switches and the wiring of the overhead switches. I have changed the flasher. I have changed all of the bulbs. Still a problem. I am about to do the turn signal wiring harness.

Any other suggestions? It seems like quite a mystery.

    Thanks,

    Marc

  9. Hi,

Thanks for the advice. There are so many bulbs involved here considering the instruments, console and overhead switches. Does anyone have an exact count of each type of bulb required, and the types, of course?

Does anyone have a part number for the resistor? Is the resistor a common item picked up locally or is it specific to the Avanti? If so, who would carry it and how do I describe it?

    Thanks again.

  10. I went to the FACTORYFIVE.COM site. WhileI found one model or replica of a Halibrand wheel the one I saw is not at all similar to the original Halibrand offered as an option from Studebaker. Can you give us a link to the wheel you are talking about? Thanks, Marc

  11. I have started this thread on the Studebaker Owners Forum as well, so I assume that I am the someone Gunslinger has mentioned. It looks as if we will be getting these wheels done, they will be made in the USA, cast using the latest state of the art casting techniques and tested to OEM standards. They will be 6" x 15". Although to appear more like the originals, they will not be polished, the quality will allow for them to be purchased polished for an additional fee.

All seems to be moving along well at this time, so I really think it will get done. The cost will be around 500 dollars a wheel, I believe. When they have more definite numbers I will post them.
