  1. your compression is to high for a charger. you can get a R2+ camshaft for it. that will give you some power, From what I am seeing , the only way to get power is to improve on the internals. the heads flow very very poor numbers, porting and better valves will help. you can lower your compression and get a sn-60 supercharger from nash nimeshi Solanki, he also is making the brackets. you can pony up some money for a evans aluminum intake. I have been searching for performance items myself, so far I see the best effort is in the heads.

  2. Nit-picks:

    • I haven't yet found a comparison of Studebaker 289 and SBC engine dimensions to know exactly why the SBC requires the nose to be shimmed up like that. The oil pan?
    • No windshield sprayer. Was that an optional item?
    • No rubber strip over the firewall.

Its due to the oil pan. It is very close to the steering arm, so the motor needs to be tilted and the body should be shimmed to make it fit.

  3. yes Mainly title in maine can re title a car.

Its kind of easy for me , as I own a repair shop. I just lein the car and in a few months I can get a title.

But I used Mainly once, and then their prices tripled, but I do have the number from the girl who did a re title a few years back. Mainly brokers the jobs out today.

Avantifred, I know where that canco tile store is. Thank you for that, Now I can show my kids where grandpa bought our Avanti.

  4. Thanks, my 63 was My fathers, he purchased it right out of the navy in late 62 or 63. from the dealer in merrick Long Island, He met my mother in the car, He raced it a lot and in 68 blew the R2 motor, one of his friends had a salvage yard and had a wrecked 68 Camaro with a 300 hp 327, they swapped motors and my dad put a power glide in it so my mom could drive it. I was almost born in the front seat on the way to Huntington hospital in 70. My cousin jimmy was in the back seat that day , he says they were going 110 down the highway with a cop in front of them, He said buddy , you were 5 minutes from being born in the front seat. I helped prime the car at 3 years old, I grabbed my dads spray gun and went to town , He was so upset , I drove this car in High school. won best car in school at the car show we had, I parked it in the garage in Houston in 87 when I graduated, and it sat there until 3 years ago. when my father past. he never drove it. I moved back to New York in 87. so for 26 years it sat. I put a battery in it a fresh gallon of gas . dribbled a bit in the carb, and it fired right up after 2 minutes of cranking. Ive looked ta a few bad R2's . I almost bought the rough gold on on ebay for 10 grand, but decided it was to rough for the money. I jumped at this one, Knowing they do not come complete this often,

So I will transplant the drivetrain into mine. so I can at least get it back to a supercharged 4 speed again. I own a repair shop and we do so custom cars a few times a year for fun and slow days.

My father was a custom car guy so he made it his own, he removed the marker lights and reverse lights , install round ones under the bumper. added rear flares that mimicked the original well openings. side pipes, and painted it pearl with what is called pastel freak spots. its a 70's car. I Love it, I don't know if I should go back to a stock look . Or make it Mine.

Either way im so excited about the r3 cloned combo. and I get to have 2 Avanti's to play with, maybe will go a little custom with the red one. who knows.

I have a few other rides, and I pulled funds from my 63 nova wagon build to by this red one. I can make more money, but its not often I get a chance like this.

  5. since you were the previous owner, can you tell me about the car. the man from texas didn't know much other than its not a real r3 . what IS done to the motor, is it a 289 or 304 does it have r3 valves. etc??? I own a auto repair shop and I a very skilled tech with body skills. I plan on ripping into it to see whats inside, unless you can shed some light.

  6. You can also ad Studebaker Avanti RQ-3623, another car I used to own....It sold on e-bay last year to a gent who lives in Texas....R2, automatic, originally Avanti White, red/fawn regal interior, originally power windows, but recently converted to manuals.

can you tell me more about this car since you were the previous owneras I just bought it for the supercharged motor and 4 speed set up.

  7. wow I won it. now I hope its everything the seller said it was. I did speak to him over the phone. Now I will have a motor to replace the blown/ missing one in my car. I will transplant the engine and trans from my white one and swap out the S/C motor and 4 speed back. being my car is not really stock or number matching. I wish the motor didn't blow back in 68. My dad tinkered with it to much , cam and I think a pulley swap. ended up blowing the bottom end.

  8. whats the chance of finding something laying around. I would like to find a original motor trans combo for my 63 r2 4sp 63r1705. I found something but it is not a rs supercharged block, just a r3 cloned engine.

  9. Thank you for your responses.

I too am not a purist. I have built many cars and most are not stock. Currently I own a 70 nova Back halved , BBC 496 with a 2004r overdrive, and I'm finishing my 63 Nova wagon . It is a crate fuel injected LS3 525hp , 4L70, Dana 60, mini tubbed , TCI M2 front clip and a TCI 4 link out back. I also installed vintage air. and rewired the complete car.

So installing a LS with a charger and a 6 speed , my be in the future For my Dad's Avanti. I'm going to Remove the PG trans and install a 2004r So its easier to drive. I have a unit on the shelf. and its a easy install. I don't think going back to a stock motor and trans would yield $10k in value. However I don't plan on selling this car. I like the flares my father made. From behind its killer looking . He mimicked the factory openings , just made them wider. Actually I think real Avanti's look funny, being this is the only way I've seen them.

I have never seen another 4spd R2 with a orange gut, I have seen a few auto's with orange interiors . For many years my father had letters sent to him by the Avanti corp with interest in taking his car on trade for a new model. Don't know if that was a normal thing back in the day. I can tell you that he did buy a showroom floor model. I was always told that the dealer was not supposed to sell them . Don't know the truth in that. With my passion for the car I doubt I'll sell it . Just keep on going in my fathers spirit of customizing it.

  10. So I'm going to be doing a little resto on my fathers r2.

Quick history on the car. Father bought it new off the lot right out of the navy. In Merrick , Long Island .

He was always into customizing cars and racing. He had modified the original motor. It blew up in 68. He traded out the 4 sped and the r2 for a Chevy 300 hp 327 and a glide. So my mother could drive it. He also added rear wheel flares . Side pipes fat tires and a pearl paint with neon freak spots back in 73. My parents met in this car. I was almost born in the front seat. I drove this car in high school. And upon graduation when I parked it in 87. It has not seen the road since. My father passed last year and I finally pulled it out of the garage in Houston and brought in back to Long Island. It's back on the road. Sitting 27 years. I dropped a battery and cleaned the carb. It started right up.

So here is the deal. I really want to go back to the original drivetrain. But I don't think the money spent would really increase the value of the car. I have been toying around the idea of a gm LS swap with a Paxton and a 6 speed trans. If it will fit. I'm going to redoing the car along the theme my father painted. It's the only way I have known the car.

I was also told many years ago it's kinda rare. Originally white orange interior R2 with a 4 spd 63R1705 . My dad told me it was 1 of 3 made. In this combo. Don't know of the truth. I have never seen another in this combo. So I don't know if I should return to 100% stock or just upgrade the car to mine and my fathers fashion. I own a repair shop and we do auto repair and custom work so I can go either way.

Would I be wrong in redoing the car custom or should I go back to stock if it is really 1 of 3 .

    Any insight guys.

    Eric

  11. What is our options for a trunk carpet set. mine is toast, sitting for 27 years in my garage really killed it.

I tried looking at vendors but have seen none, or am I blind?

    which is a BIG possibility.

    Thanks, Eric

  12. Who , if anyone, makes Avanti seat upholstery in orange. I really want to have mine restitched and new piping put on, but the original material has some kinda water marks and bumps on them from sitting in my garage for the past 27 years. so I have been looking but no avail.

  13. I fixed it. I finally had a chance to put it on a lift at night and go over the entire system, bleed adjusted and shimmed the calipers. I clamped off the brake hoses again and noticed that the pedal did not set until about 1 inch of movement, it had to much free play, ended up being a misadjusted master cylinder pushrod. I rebuilt the master and I guess the new cylinder cup was way deeper. turned it out over a 1/4 of a inch. now its very firm. stops great. I am happy.

  14. I took them off and sandblasted them cleaned them up and re assembled them. the inner and outer look the same. I realize there is a check ball on the bleeder. i know i have moved the calipers around, someone had ground down the bendix off them on the outers. i had installed them with bendix facing out now. so the inners are on the outers. but they appear to be the same caliper. i read about the shims. i will have to go back and check that,

  15. ok so on my 63 I had to rebuild all the hydraulics. the master, all 4 calipers, the cylinders. I put on new pads and shoes, return springs and anti rattle clips. new hose in the rear and a few new lines. my problem is I cant get a brake pedal. I know the problem exists up front. if I clamp off the brake hoses. the brake pedal is rock solid. if I remove the clamp off the rear . the brake pedal drops ever so slightly.if I remove the front clamp, bam down it goes, if I remove the other front , its on the floor. so I re-bleed like crazy, I checked out, to make sure the pistons are not sticking. ive tried power bleeding . I just cant get a good pedal.

so im here hoping that someone will have had a similar problem and has a solution.

im at a point where a turner brake kit looks good.
