Rear spring mounting point and front suspension a-arm rear mount though I almost think one would need a special pad for the front arm.

I might guess the hoses and lines since running with original or even NOS original and todays fuel could spell the end of a nice car. Fire hazard!

#3. I think I recall August but my memory ain't what it used to be....

I would be interested to see that ad, or a least a reference to it. It does not make sense to me.
I'm with Gary on this. Not that I don't believe the truth in the statement. This is such a fantastical (new word on my part) type error I just want to see it for myself. Where do you find this stuff? Oh wait! When did Volkswagen come out with their floor mounted stick shift 4 speed without a clutch pedal? I remember driving one of those back in the early seventies. It was awkward.

One with one without FM radio and dual outside rearview mirrors...
-
Makes sense since they are going to option out a car long before the final build date arrives.
-
Ok. So my car had the option and the build date is 3/63 so lets go with that.

Ok. Seems there is an answer and it looks like no mystery here. Thanks for all the replies and now I will go look for my hidden serial number. Later.
-
Without opening my parts manual (it is so much easier to look foolish if I don't) I will have to agree with Mr. Dudley on this one. I found the letter L on the other leg of the cross member... Still learning. I will go and check the parts manual now!
Ok, so that was a big fail... Unless I was looking in the wrong section there is no mention of any number that describes the x-member. I checked the parts manual and the authenticity manual. I still believe Mr. Dudley is correct but how to prove it. I await great wisdom to guide me in my quest.

Is it the last four digits of your Serial Number?
No. It is 4 digits and it has R stamped under it. It is on the x-member part of the frame. It is in full view on the front right section at the exhaust cutout. I would post a pic but am now limited to only 360K file size and that seems really small.
-
What does a number stamped on the x-member, not hidden, signify? I tried a search but came up empty...

Didn't the early Larks have a slightly shorter wheelbase? I seem to recall 108 or 108.5 inch. I don't know if this would make much of a difference but maybe... Just sayin'.
-
Hahaha! Joke was on me! I don't know how much time I spent trying to get the interior lights to come on with the doors opening. Have owned umpteen Larks over the years and it never occurred to me that the Avanti would be different and I would need to "look in the book" and trace the wiring. Mind you I did find a short in the under-dash light that kept smoking the fuse. Love this platform! You never know what may show up...

So if everything was fully documented, recorded and preserved, sort of what Gunslinger alluded to, what kind of fun would that have left us with? MFG's trivia pages are probably doing more to expose the life and times of our Avanti's (all years, not just '63 and '64 as with the Authenticity Manual) than most other venues around. Don't get me wrong. The Manual is an excellent resource!

Michelin's were available when Studebaker was still making cars so I would like to think Avanti motors offered them early. Lets say 1969...
-
The '63 split window never made it to '64 as the split was a big hindrance to rear viewability (is that a word?) and Chevy actually listened to the nay-sayers on this one.

The mechanical regulators had some adjustment possible but I am not sure what you have for an electronic reg... I installed a Toyota 1 wire alternator when my old one died and I haven't had a problem in 4 years. Mechanical regulators are still available so if you are happy with your alternator you might replace the reg. It actually sounds like the electronic reg you have is not wired correctly which is why it simply sends an unregulated 18 volts onto the charge circuit.
-
I don't think so, Tim...uh, MFG. False.

We stayed in Buckley and found a wand style car wash. I had to drive the truck thru and block a bit of the exit but people understood. It took off most of the course grit but I had to towel it down and use my spray and shine to clean it up. It is a driver so that will mostly have to do. See ya later today.

We made it to Columbia Falls Montana just west of Glacier Park. Raining here and car is a mess even though it is on a trailer and there is a board across the whole front. Hopefully no more road destruction as the gravel and mud are horrible.

When my car was rebuilt in 1985 it had a set of glass packs, probably some original Cherry Bombs and 2 beautiful exhaust tips fitted up. The mufflers were actually TOO loud for the neighborhood so I had the exhaust completely replaced. I know, BOOOOO! But I kept the mufflers and the tips and they will go back on another car. My wife didn't like the change out either. She says now she can't here it when I come and go from my garage.

Something I am not sure of but do the R1 and R2 use the same mounting brackets and therefore the same alternators? If not then the Toyota style might not work for you... I would look in my parts book but I am not near it.

In my case I am not beefing the output so that I can drive a huge stereo or anything else. This is what I found.
It is actually 60 amps and it only delivers full amperage when called for. I intentionally ran my battery down to check what was going through the ammeter if the battery was pulled low. When I started the car the gauge showed initial charge at 30 amps, which is not pegged. This dropped fast, about 3 seconds, to 10 amps or so then settled to near zero once the battery came back up. I will never add enough gadgets to the car to draw anywhere near 60 amps while operating it so I am not worried about the wiring being able to handle the full output of the alternator.
If you have a very weak battery or want to use the full output for any other reason then you will need to consider what JLBKY mentioned above.
