I never saw one in person in 62-63 but seeing the pics and reading about the performance, I was in love and vowed I would own one some day. I had an opportunity to buy one from a Dr. in Kirkland WA for $3500 IN '67, but that was way out of my league (I was making $500/month back then). So the dream had to be put away - until last year. 50 years later, there is a black '85 in my life. I have about 10 years left before my kids take my keys away from me, so I am going out, in style.

Thanks for all the constructive advice. I think I learned enough to solve the problem. However, the good news, I called Nostalgic and low and behold, he had both hoses in stock. I bought them both knowing if we only fixed the one that is leaking now, with my luck, the other would spring a leak in the near future. After all, the hoses are 30 years old. I probably paid a little more for them than if we would have made up our own set, but whenever I can get OE, at some sort of affordable price, that is the direction I will go.
Thanks again.

one final attempt at finding a replacement part on someone's shelf. (I never realized there were this many variations to a system that every car has).
My mech describes it thusly:
That is not exactly correct...the line at the compression fittings is leaking at the service port. ..The o-rings would be EZ. Think of a radiator hose leak at the clamp tighten clamp problem solved. In your case the leak is at the clamp. Only on this hose is high pressure and the clamp is crimped on so it cannot be tightened.
Making the line is probably the best answer if we cannot find the actual replacement part. The problem is repair parts may be hard to get or made from that rare substance un-obtain-ium...get the idea
Mike
Any other ideas before we start the rebuild?

More information. The connection that is leaking is between the compressor and the dryer. Low side charge fitting, shrader port, weatherhead connection are some other words that I hear but have no idea what they are talking about. My mech says if we can't find what we are looking for, he can probably build (rebuild?) the fitting. I would rather buy a new, correct part.
Come on guys. I assume all 84-85 have the same A/C arrangements, I can't be the first to lose this fitting?
Any ideas?
Anybody?

My AC connection between the hose coming from the compressor connecting to the hose going into the dash is leaking. It is the connection that you use to charge the system, I think (never done it). My auto parts store is not sure what size and keeps talking about some mystery "O" rings they don't know about either. Any help for my '85?

What year did the back up lights get moved to the license plate? 1984? 1985?

after talking to my front end guy, he doesn't feel the full overhaul is necessary, just replace the bushings and tighten and clean every thing up.
I noticed the kit you sent says 1963-1982 Avanti. Mine is an '84. Any changes made between '82-;84?

ALSO 1963-1982 AVANTI -
I am told my king pins are shot and that it is impossible to align the front wheels until they are repaired. I know little to nothing about king pin front ends. My '84 has 95K so I am not surprised to find things are a little worn. My question is: when looking through the parts catalog i see a 1)bushing repair kit, or 2) a complete king pin repair kit.
What is the best course? I am guessing the King pins themselves do not wear out, but if there are bushings involved I can see they would need to be replaced.
what advice does my Avanti friends have for me?
I only want to do this once, so if the king pins need to be replaced while replacing the bushings, so be it. If not, we will go with the bushing repair.
Side note, I see a catalog item for 3) quick steering arms. Should they be replaced when we are doing the king pin repair?
any help would be much appreciated.

I have an '84 with the 305. My documentation says it is an IROC Camaro engine.

By the way, I am RQB 4143 - with mags. Wires go on this week.

OK. It looks cool. But I have to jar my artistic sensibilities back to my high school days (which was about 100 years ago) when white walls were popular and black walls were considered ugly. In fact, the only reason you had black walls is because you couldn't afford white walls.
The process is painful.
-
Whoa? Narrow white walls? the wires look pretty nasty on a black car, black walls.
You got a picture to share?
-
OK. Problem solved - maybe.
I have Dayton wire wheels manufactured in 1982. They are still in business, talked to them today and they were very confident what lug nut I needed. They are on their way. I will let you know how it all turns out.
Contact info.
Thank you for your interest in Dayton Wire Wheels, The lugnuts are available by calling the factory at 1-937-438-0100 ext. 210, They sell for $ 6.00 each and include a stainless washer.

I will have to go check to see if there is a brand name. I assumed they were original equipment because they have an Avanti logo in their center. Other than that, they are just chrome, wire spoke wheels attached to the hub with 5 chrome lug nuts. I guess this is more of a mystery than I thought it would be. I will give the wheels a closer inspection.
-
Before going to the auto parts store, let me make one more observation about the lug nuts. They have to have a flange on the nut to hold the wheel to the hub. If i had your email address, I could show you a picture but I assume you get the idea. I suppose there is some way to attach a picture to this forum but I am a little technically challenged.
-
New problem.
When I first looked at the car, it had its original spokes on. When I came back, the dealer had replaced with mags which I really like. Last weekend I polished up the spokes and took them down to rehang them. Only problem, I didn't get the original lug nuts that went with the spokes and nobody in our small town has anything that fits and the dealer thinks he threw his away?
Anyone know 1) where I might be able to purchase some lug nuts that will fit or 2) what wheels are on an '84 Avanti? Studebaker? Chevy?

Thanks a million Bob. No telling how much time and money you saved me.

Now, let me see what it looks like with fan and shroud, please. I will be taking this full set of pictures to my radiator guy. By the way, I live in a rural area. Not only are there no other Avanti's out here, most people have never even seen one before. Makes it kind of fun to drive around. I never lack for conversation in a parking lot.
-
Just gets hot. Heads towards 220. That is when I stop and let it cool down. It vapor locked on me once at 220, so I won't let it go there anymore. The gist of what I am hearing is rather than replace the whole system, just clean up the system I have - and add a shroud.
Sound right?
-
It has the Camaro, 305 in it. You are correct about the Stude frame. the fan runs all the time. No shroud. If that is the original rediator, it is 30 years old. If it was replaced sometime along the line, it is at least 15 years old because the car had been sitting for 15 years before I bought it. i know the old saying," if it ain't broke, don't try to fix it" The system I have in there now works fine except on 100 degree days. Even so, I would like to start over.
-
As you can tell, I am leaning on this forum pretty heavily to share your expertise and save me some money at the same time. i purchased an '84 in April. Radiator had 2 electric fans, the battery had fallen off its stand and busted one so my mech. replaced with just one Syclone electric fan. On 100 degree days, sitting in traffic, this is just not getting the job done. I would like to replace with whatever other Avanti owners have found successful - at a reasonable price. When I showed him the aluminum one from Univeral for $140, he said not a good idea to mix cast iron with aluminum. Some physics that I don't pretend to understand. 4 questions:
1) What was the original radiator used in the 84's off the production line? Chev?
2) Any comment on the Aluminum/cast iron issue?
3) Any suggestions on fans and shrouds?
4) other suggestions?

Thanks for your help. I will take your remedies to my mechanic. I am afraid if I ever got under my car, I might never come out.

Let me know if Chip, or one of the other auto shows that have become so popular, decides to overhaul an Avanti.
I wouldn't want to miss it.
But seriously, what could any of those guys do that would improve Avanti's already perfect look?
