  1. I have a 1985 Avanti with wire wheels.  I was going to get the front tires balanced and the tech said "how do I get that Avanti cap off"?  Damned if I know.  It twists but doesn't seem to be threaded.  Don't want to take a crow bar to it.  Does it just pop off or is there a trick

  2. Amazing.  I haven't been on the forum for years, just signed in regarding my wire wheels on my '85 Avanti and there you are.. Went to have the front wheels balanced and tech says, how do you get that center cap off?  Damned if I know.  Does it just pop off?  Don't really want to take a crowbar to it not knowing what I am doing.

  3. Why is this so hard? I am trying to replace my oil pressure sender on my '85.

My mechanic is concerned about the stock sender for the 305 compatablity with my stewart warner gauge.

Is this a problem? Anyone know the Oil pressure sender part number I should be looking for?

    Thanks

  4. Ok, we finally isolated the starter problem and fixed it. As the mech, said there is a relay between switch and starter that sometime worked, sometimes not. He wired around it, problem solved.

Now the latest issue is on 100 degree days (black car) going up the hill to my house, engine temp just a little over 200, the car starts hesitating, sputtering like a vapor lock. Only happens when outside temp is close to 100. As my son will probably inherit the car in a few years and he lives in Dallas, so am trying to sory out all of the temp issues.

    Any suggestions?

  5. I have been struggling with starting problems since last summer. Turn the key, nothing. Wait a few minutes, starts right up. Finally bit the bullet and replaced the starter, solenoid. Thought the problem was solved. Been driving it about a week, went out after lunch and samo-samo. I plan to replace the ignition key assembly next but not very confident this will end the problem.

    Anyone else have similar problems?

    Anyone?

  6. I am having some starter issues during this hot phase of summer. The starter will not activate, but it is random. Doesn't happen in the morning, just after being driven to the store, for instance, go in, come back out, hit the key - nothing. Wait 15-20 minutes, fires right up. I have gone through the usual decision tree, starter motor?- nope, solenoid? - maybe. ignition switch? - maybe.

Anyone else have any of this. If it is a engine heat problem, I am wondering if some sort of heat shield might be useful. Probably going to replace all three items and be done with it.

    Ideas?

  7. I am trying to resist temptation. Please help me. I am contmplating replacing my 305 with a new unit. 95K miles, I would like to start over.

But then I got thinking, why 305? why not BIGGER?. I am guessing a 383 is about the nastiest small black that would fit without major modifations.

Anyone done this? Please tell me this is a really dumb idea. Please!

  13. Well, here is where I am kind of baffled.

Last summer was my first with this car. Runs great, stays cool up to about 90 degrees. Though I was pretty sure the radiator needed replacing, did the power flush and fluid change to see if that helped. It did but still overheated. This spring we put in the new radiator, electric fan and shroud, changed fluids again. The car is driven exclusively in the city (actually small town) and under about 5 miles per trip. On a hot day, it really doesn't get much of a chance to cool itself in such a short distance. The fuel pump theory is when the car decides to die on that damned hill, it acts like it has run out of gas. My mech asks. "how much gas did you have", I said less than a quarter tank. So, he says, fill up your tank and try it again. It may be your gas tank isn't properly "baffled" which of course has nothing to do with the fuel pump. My mech has saved me as much as you guys.

We will try filling the tank. Got a hot day coming on Wednesday.

    Grasping at straws.

  14. I would love to get the engine temp down a bit. Last summer, hot days would push the engine temp to 220, at which I stopped driving it. Replaced original radiator this spring and added a cowl. I was hoping that would take care of it - just been waiting for a hot day. With the new arrangement, I don't think the engine will overheat, but is running hotter than I would like.

Not sure where to go next. Water pump? Seems like I Need to get more outside air into the engine compartment but don't know how. I don't really want to add a spoiler, prefer not to drive it when it is hot. I don't like that solution either.

    the car has 95K miles.

  15. I have vapor locked twice twice going up the same hill, same place, hot day. After the first time, I took care of the overheating problem with a new radiator. So, I was quite surprised yesterday when the car did it again, about the same place but the temp gauge was just a little over 200. So, I am guessing fuel pump and I would like to make it electric. My mech asked me do I have a camaro gas tank, therefore camaro fuel pump, or something else?

I gave him my usual "huh?" expression.

    Any ideas?
